You can pause the stream as well as rewind it, just like you would if you were watching a movie on your DVD player or DVR. These broadcasts are being recorded, so don’t worry if you come in late or have to miss any of them.

Dear Temple Member, We enter 5781 with a picture that reminds me of Albert Einstein’s Hair Follicles! We have maintained a closed building for almost 6 months; school is about to begin w/o a setting. But, we’ve also been able to provide Shabbat services just about every week! And, of course, Rabbi Lader has continued to lead us spiritually. Somehow, we have celebrated B’Nai Mitzvahs in the midst of a pandemic. The simple answer as to how this occurred – our members are strong, amenable to change, and care for the process of bringing their children along to adulthood. The six months will bring more and more B’Nai Mitzvah celebrations as well. Needless to say, we have no idea when any level of normalcy will return to BI – defined as the return to in- person educational opportunities, Torah Study in Ratner Hall, and Shabbat services in the sanctuary. Please note as follows regarding the business and operations side of BI: We know we will not be able to have another Casino Night for the foreseeable future. No plans are being made for a GALA. Thus, our Operating Budgetary is subject to very high stress days ahead. We simply do not have enough full-paying members to cover our very tight costs. Labor costs for our three employees – yes, just 3 – Pat, Debbie, and Rabbi – are fixed. We cannot operate without them – on the contrary, we would be in the middle of the Dead Sea without a paddle if we were to lose any one of them. Our plans to reconfigure the kitchen are moving forward; the project has been fully funded! We are working with the City of Cleveland on permits, etc. at the present time. The Ohio Historical Marker is also moving forward. We have just come 2020 Pillar to an agreement, thanks to the efforts of Miriam Rosenblum and others, Members on the exact wording on the Marker. Remember, we get one side and the JFC gets the other. Luis Fernandez & Barbara Feldmar We continue to market the unimproved real estate in North Olmsted. Unfortunately, a recent purchase agreement fell by the wayside. David & Holly Neumann My fellow members, the Board of Trustees remains committed to the Alfred & Sylvia Rimm solvency of Beth Israel. Saying that is easy! Getting through these Peter and Jessica Sackett difficult times is the exact opposite. Thus, I continue to ask for donations earmarked to our General Operations Fund. Thackeray. NE: Back when we were on total lockdown I decided I would read The Three Musketeers... unfortunately I didn’t get too far before giving up. Describe your ideal reading experience (when, where, what, format). RS: Sitting in my “reading chair” in my family room, or on my patio in nice weather. I read across formats-print/digital/audio. I can’t drive without having an audiobook to listen to:) We encourage you to What’s your favorite book no one else has heard of? make a tzedakah contribution to the SCAN RS: Niagara Falls All Over Again, Elizabeth McCracken; The Last Flight Hunger Center, to help of Poxl West, Daniel Torday; The Poser, Jacob Rubin, Delicious Foods, them support all those James Hannaham who are hungry. Interesting characters and great storytelling. Beautiful Ruins, by Jess Walter was divine. The Book of Speculation, Erika Swyler... How do you organize your books? RS: The nonfiction books I own are organized by topic. My fiction is loosely organized-I do keep books by the same author together. Which genres do you especially enjoy reading? And which do you avoid RS: I especially enjoy “literary fiction”. I tend to avoid science fiction/horror. Though I really enjoyed All Our Wrong Todays, Elan Mastai (audiobook, read by author), which is kind of sci-fi. NE: I love reading all kinds of books but avoid sci-fi and horror stories.

Has a book ever brought you closer to another person, or come between you? RS: When David and I love/appreciate the same books, it’s pretty cool, since we have very different tastes in reading materials. We both loved the audio version of Daisy Jones and the Six, by Tara Jenkins Reid, A Sudden Light, by Garth Stein and Turbulent Souls, Stephen Dubner. What’s the most interesting thing you learned from a book recently? RS: I read primarily fiction, so even if it’s historical fiction I don’t rely on things as facts. NE: Rudolph Hess flew himself to Scotland in 1941 in hopes of brokering a peace treaty with England (Hitler did not know about this). He was caught and thrown in prison. Ever read a best seller and been disappointed? Which one? RS: I read the first book in Elana Ferrante’s Neapolitan series and was underwhelmed. I couldn’t get into Lincoln in the Bardo, George Saunders. What book might people be surprised to find on your shelves? RS: I collect the books of Nick Bantock—they are works of art. (Griffin and Sabine series, The Forgetting Room). What do you do when a book is disappointing? Finish it or stop reading? RS: Recently, I decided to stop reading books that I am not enjoying—there are so many more out there I might love! Recommend one book!!!! RS: I just finished Florence Adler Swims Forever, by Rachel Beanland. It is set in Atlantic City, (“down the shore” for any fellow Philadelphians), and the characters are reminiscent of many people my grandparents knew. NE: Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate and I just finished reading The Splendid and the Vile by Erik Larson. It is based around Winston Churchill’s first two years as prime minister (1940–1941). It shows how Churchill taught his countrymen “ the art of being fearless”. Churchill had no doubts that England would win the war. The nazis were stymied that this little island could withstand the full force of the Third Reich! More than that though, it showed a very real picture of what life was like in Britain at the time (did you know that everyone had to paint their mailboxes with special paint that changed color if it came in contact with poison gas?). He describes the parties, the intrigue, and the persistent bombing. Imagine two years of living through 9/11 type attacks!
