TOP TIP – LinkedIn

It's never too early to start building a network with people in your career area. LinkedIn is a platform that allows you to do just that.

LinkedIn is the world's largest professional network with 740 million users in more than 200 countries and territories across the globe.

You can start by linking to your peers now, as in the future they become business re- ferrals. You can check out career paths – find people who are already employed in your desired profession. Look at their profiles to see what they have done to be- come successful. It also allows you to prepare for interviews. When you have a job or internship inter-

view, review the profile of the person who will interview you. Having this back- ground knowledge during the interview will help impress the interviewer.

Campus Tours

With the restrictions easing from 12th April many universities are welcoming guests back on to their campuses and again offer campus tours. All Covid secure measures will still be in place, including things like an adapted route with one-way systems, PPE and restrictions of one family per tour.

Sometimes, in order to gain the full experience, it’s good to visit your desired university. It gives you the opportunity to ask questions and imagine what it would be like to study there.

Here are a few tips on how to get the most out of your campus visit:

The Real Feel Campus visits offer a first-hand view of your potential university. During your visit, you’re normally able to tour classes, interact with students, and maybe even use campus amenities.

Ask Away Ask questions during your campus visit. Campus tour guides are extremely knowledgeable and can help you better understand your potential campus. Great questions to ask include:

How many students attend this university? What is the average class size?

What is the setup for a typical student accomodation?

What kinds of activities or events are held on campus?

How do I get involved on campus? What kinds of clubs or groups can I join?

Where do I park for classes?

Don’t Be Afraid to Interact To make the most of your visit, interact with others on campus. Talk with student advisors. Make sure you stop by the student union, library or office on campus to learn more about your potential university.

Post Visit Actions After your campus visit, develop a pro/con list. Talk through your experience with a parent, family member or friend.

How can Social Media help you find a job?

Social media is a part of most people’s everyday lives, but many don’t realise that it can be used for so much more than sharing photos.

Social media can help you with your job search, here is how:

1. Make yourself visible – gone are the days of sifting through the newspapers to find a job. Today’s students need to be savvy to compete in the global job market. One third of employers use social re- cruiting, so making yourself visible on social media could help you get noticed. A personal profile on LinkedIn (see today’s Top Tip) acts as your online CV and is a great way to showcase your experience. Make sure your information is up-to-date, complete and matches the CV you’re sending out. LinkedIn focuses on work and achievements so is more professional than Twitter and Facebook (and it is widely used by recruiters to source candidates). Other social media platforms can also be used, but be careful about what information you share.

2. Job search – LinkedIn is the number one social media resource for job seekers – the site has a ded- icated “jobs” section and 94% of recruiters use it to ‘vet’ candidates. You can filter the search crite- ria, create email alerts and apply for some jobs without leaving the LinkedIn site. Twitter is another useful resource, you can use hashtags to search for relevant jobs (e.g. #entryleveljob). If you’re interested in a specific company then follow its social media accounts to be the first to hear about new job opportunities.

3. Manage your online persona – a CareerBuilder Survey showed that 60% of employers use social networks to screen potential candidates. This means that what a company can find out about you online could affect your job application. It’s a good idea to check what comes up when you Google your name!

4. Network – ‘Who you know’ plays a big role in finding job vacancies so utilise your online connec- tions. If you’re openly looking for a job, tell everyone in your social networks – you might be sur- prised how many people ask for your CV. LinkedIn recommendations are also a great way to add credibility to your online CV. Ask people who know you to write a recommendation; it could be from a teacher, employer or colleague.

5. Research – when completing job applications it’s important to research the organisation you are interested in. Following a company’s social media channels is a great way to understand the compa- ny culture and see how it communicates with customers. Social media can also help you keep up-to- date with industry developments. Updates happen in real-time so it is often the first place for break- ing news. Read tweets, Facebook timelines, LinkedIn posts (groups, companies, individuals) and Google+ pages. You can read different viewpoints to gauge the bigger picture. This will help you build industry knowledge which could be useful in an interview.

6. Understand social media – social media has had a huge impact on the way organisations com- municate with their stakeholders. It has evolved beyond the marketing department, and depart- ments across each business are using social media to improve their processes. Being savvy about Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and other social channels is a sought-after skill which organisations will value.
