The community of Boulder Junction traces its roots back to 1903, when railroad tracks were laid through this beautiful corner of Wisconsin’s Northwoods. Though the rail line was built for the shipment of white pine logs, it also became a pipeline for hunters and anglers who flocked to this untouched area. A number of resorts popped up to serve the growing number of vacationers. In the 1930s, a Chicago sportswriter who regularly vacationed in Boulder Junction coined the phrase, “Musky Capital of the World,” a label which stuck, due to the fact that more musky are caught from Boulder Junction area lakes than any other similarly sized area. The phrase was awarded a trademark in 1971. To learn more about Boulder Junction’s history visit the Boulder Junction Historical Museum located next to the community center. The museum is open Memorial Day to Labor Day, Tuesdays and Saturdays from 10am to 2pm. Admission is free. There is also a Boulder Junction History Book available at a number of locations throughout town. For a complete list of cabins, resorts and vacation homes, see directory on pages 42-44.

Boulder Junction is home to an unusually large number of albino deer. Sometimes referred to as white deer or ghost deer, these stunning white-tailed deer are true albinos, exhibiting pure white coats as well as pink noses, ears and hooves. To see one is an unforgettable experience.

Why are there so many albino deer in Boulder Junction? No one knows for sure. It is illegal for hunters to shoot an albino deer, so perhaps this has allowed an existing population of albino deer to grow. Also, due to their uniqueness, people probably feed and look after the albino deer more than other deer.

Whatever the reason, Boulder Junction has more albino deer than any other place in Wisconsin. Check availability of these accommodations at boulderjct.org e l b i d s a b n s e u u e r c o T A
