Phone Number +919446909913 E-mail [email protected] Status Individual Type of Mining Open cast semi-mechanized Period of Mining The period of mining is required for 5 years Mr. Alexander K J, residing at Kayalvarathu Emmanuel, Panayam P.O, Perinad, Kollam District 691 601 has applied for grant of Environmental Clearance from the Hon’ble DEIAA, Thiruvananthapuram District for the proposed Granite Building stone located in Survey No. 217 pt (Govt. Land) over an extent of 2.00 Hectares at Pallickal Village, Varkala Taluk, Thiruvananthapuram District, Kerala for a period of 5 years. 2.2 Brief description of nature of the project Part of the proposed land is quarry Lease area and there is no vegetation in that area. The remaining land in the proposed land is mostly covered with native trees, shrubs, herbs, grass, climbers, bushes, etc. The topography of the area is hilly terrain. The highest elevation of the Lease area is 98 m MSL and lowest elevation is 59 m MSL. As the proposed area is hill rock, the drainage of the lease area is towards North, West and East side. The geological reserves of the mining area is estimated by cross sectional method is as 2045172 MT of Granite Building stone up to a depth of 56 m from the hill top, having considered the depth of mining, recovery, safety barriers etc. The total mineable reserves are estimated as 1143741 MT and 264243 MT for five years. 2 Granite Building Stone Quarry of Mr. Alexander K J at Sy. Land) of Pallickal Village, Block No-26, Varkala Taluk, Thiruvananthapuram District, Kerala Pre-Feasibility Report The recovery factor is taken as 95% from the top bench up to the bottom. Depth of mining is taken as 56 m. The life of the mine is computed as five years with Maximum Production of 76416 MT achieved in fifth year. 2.3 Need for the project and its importance to the country and or region The major need of building stone is due to high compressive strength and durability (among the hardest, dimensional & structural stones) it can effectively withstand the vagaries of nature. Fine-grained granite is employed for ornamental and monumental. Works as well as for inscription purposes. The mineral –rich colours, and the hardness & density, makes its useful for many applications. The proposed mining project will fulfill its end uses in buildings and constructions, bridges, paving, monuments and many other exterior projects. Polished slabs and titles are used in countertops, flooring, retaining walls and landscaping around a centre are used in countertops, flooring, retaining walls and landscaping around a centre fountain / pond, staircase and many other design elements (residential and commercial applications). It is also known as the maintenance – free stone. The mining and associated activities in the mineral bearing areas bring about gains in gross domestic product, ie. There is though a minor contribution by the proposed project but will add to the gains in G.D.P (Gross Domestic Product). A total of 20 people will be employed in the mine. It will create employment (though marginally) for local population. Applicant will pay royalty for the mineral produced from the mine, direct and indirect taxes will be paid thereby contributing to the regional revenue. The public revenue will further be put for infrastructure development and other sectors like health, education and social welfare. 2.4 Demand – Supply Gap Since it is main raw material in construction project. It is always in demand. So the proposed mining project will fulfill its end users in local market, as it is always in good demand in construction projects. 3 Granite Building Stone Quarry of Mr. Alexander K J at Sy. Land) of Pallickal Village, Block No-26, Varkala Taluk, Thiruvananthapuram District, Kerala Pre-Feasibility Report 2.5 Imports / Exports Building stone explored from the mines will be used in the local areas in construction activities like roads, building and railways. The mineral produced from the proposed mine will be sent to the crusher plant located near the quarry site for crushing it to required size before dispatching it to the end use. 2.6 Export possibility No export businesses are taken in this project. 2.7 Domestic/ export markets The rough stone produced will be sold in local market, which is in turn used for construction purposes. 2.8 Employment Generation due to the project Around 20 employees will be engaged in the mines after the expansion and required manpower for mining operation is given in Table 2 – 1. 1. The proposed quarry area is privately owned rocky land. The proposed quarry area is located at Madavoor village, 8 km from Navaikulam and 34 km from Thiruvananthapuram. Part of the proposed land is mostly covered with native trees, shrubs, herbs, grass, climbers, bushes etc. The highest elevation of the lease area is 110 m MSL and lowest is 90 m MSL. As the proposed area is hill rock, the drainage of the lease area is towards west direction. No habitants are located in the lease area. The geological resources of G ranite (Building Stone) in mining lease area are estimated to be 345448 MT. In the first five years of plan period total 1,25,000 MT Granite (Building Stone) shall be quarried/mined. The balance mineral reserves and part of blocked resources shall be quarried after modifying the bench design in next five year period . Kerala experiences rainfall in duration of 3 to 4 months in a year and that is why the quarry operations will be affected by these rainy days. The average annual rainfall of the district is 3000 mm. The anticipated life of the quarry is 10 years expected.
