Since June 19th volunteers have been busy transforming a poured basement into a two storey duplex. We have had many dedicated local volunteers coming out on a regular basis. We also welcomed a small group of Drumheller inmates, along with their supervisor, who were involved in constructing the pre- fabricated outer walls over five days in June and July. Cargill, one of our major sponsors, supported three Build Days in July and August by sponsoring their staff to come out to the site and help construct the duplex. Insulating Foundations on June 3rd We also had the University of Alberta Alumni Adopt A Day in early August. August 16th saw the arrival of 15 Care-A-Vanners who camped out at George Lane Memorial Park in High River. The Care-A-Vanners spent three weeks on our site and came from across North America. They brought a combined experience of 172 builds with them. Local High River churches and organizations provided a devotional at the beginning of each work th Duplex on August 12 – Cargill Adopt a Day day and provided oustanding lunches during the three weeks the Care-A-Vanners were on site. After only two weeks the Care-A-Vanners and local volunteers transformed our duplex – and they still had another week to go when this photo was taken! Once the roof has been sheathed with plywood and the second floor windows have been installed the inside trades (Quigley Electric and GM Mechanical) can get to work. While the trades are busy inside there is still lots of work for volunteers to do outside.

Duplex on September 1st – 10 days after Care-A- Vanners arrived Successes and Thank Yous Thank you to the graduating grade 6 classes at Dr. Morris Gibson Elementary School in Okotoks. They raised $3000 over two years through their fundraising efforts and donated it to the Foothills Chapter build in High River. To see their donation at work school staff will be participating in an Adopt a Day at the build site on September 26th.

A huge Thank You goes out to the St. Benedict Anglican Church, Full Gospel Church, High River United Church, Baptist Church, Salvation Army, Trinity Mennonite Church, High River Family Community Support Services, Henry Freisen and Gabby and Janice Alfon for donating their time and resources to provide morning devotionals and hearty, outstanding lunches for the three weeks the Care-A-Vanner team was on-site. Thank you also to the High River Autoplex who hosted and sponsored the Farewell BBQ on September 3rd. You did the Foothills Chapter and our community proud and I High River Autoplex owners Jerry think we have set a new bar for host communities to meet! We could not have Howe and Doug McLaughlin done it without you.

OCT Swing Open the Doors! 24 The Foothills Chapter is hosting their 1st annual “Raise the Roof” Dinner, Concert and Barn Dance on Saturday October 24 at Lynnwood Ranch. Tickets are on sale now at Eventbrite.com. Search for “Raise the Roof” and buy your tax-receipt eligible tickets online. The fun-filled evening begins with a roast beef dinner, followed by a concert by The Western Swing Project, finished off with a dance featuring Spur Crazy.

Get Involved Join the Foothills Chapter Team - Are you looking for a way to give back to your community and make a real difference in people’s lives? Are you looking to learn new skills, contribute skills you already have, or meet new people? Well, you are in luck! We still have many opportunities for you to get involved.

Becoming a Volunteer is easy – Step 1: navigate your way to http://habitatsouthernab.ca/volunteers/volunteer-registration/ and fill out the Volunteer Application by providing some basic information. Step 2: review the health and safety documents and videos. Step 3: read and consent to the Waiver. Not long after you electronically submit your application you should get an email letting you know that your Volunteer Application has been processed. You can now sign up for volunteer shifts: http://habitatsouthernab.ca/volunteers/shift-signup/.

We are still recruiting Crew Leaders with construction related skills. As a Crew Leader you will typically mentor a team of volunteers with a wide range of experience. You should have some experience in the construction or renovation industry. If you are interested in the challenge you will need to:  sign up for 3 volunteer days at the High River site ; and,  send us a resume or detailed description of your experience ([email protected]).
