THE PENINSULA PRESS

5 April, 2017

Duke of Edinburgh Gold Walk to Snowy Mountains THANKYOU FOR A WONDERFUL FUNDRAISING EFFORT FOR BEAR COTTAGE

As you’ll know from last week’s Peninsula Press Bear Cottage is an initiative of The Children’s Hospital at Westmead located in Manly. Bear Cottage is the only children’s hospice in NSW - a very special place that’s dedicated to caring for children with life-limiting conditions. Families who care for a child with a life-limiting condition often do so around the clock for many years. Their vision is to be as far removed from a hospital environment as possible. They're set up to provide excellence in paediatric palliative care 24 hours a day, and their affiliation with The Children's Hospitals Network means they have access to some of the best medical resources in the world.

To kick-start the fundraising Claire McCarthy from Bear Cottage presented to the students on Thursday’s Formal Assembly and then students wore blue on Friday and bought Mars Bar cookies in support this wonderful cause.

I am very pleased to announce that Barrenjoey raised $3,002 for Bear Cottage last week. Well done to all who donated. If you missed donating last week, and would like to assist there is still time contributing directly at: https://support.bandagedbear.org.au/donation-bear-cottage

FAREWELL MRS SUSAN BARNARD HSIE TEACHER RETIRES AFTER 31 YEARS AT BARRENJOEY HIGH

Congratulations to the wonderful Mrs Susan Barnard who has retired after an amazing 31 years here at Barrenjoey!

Sue has taught English, Geography, History and Society and Culture. We wish Sue all the very best for her next adventure, and thank her for her incredible dedication to teaching, her passion and commitment to Barrenjoey, students and staff. You will be missed Sue.

It could not have been more fitting than to farewell Mrs Barnard in such a Regal manner with a Classy High Tea. FRIDAY MARCH 31 WAS THE YEAR. 12 ‘REPORT DAY’

Well the special day for Year 12, a day where students received their reports, attended presentations and participated in report analysis is over for another year. In Year 12, Semester One Reports are given out to students with their parents present. Students and parents then discuss results and analyse the report in a constructive manner to support HSC students as they embark on their final six-months of schooling. Following the report distribution students were presented to by a number of speakers, including myself and Mr Heath Bambridge (local Boathouse celebrity and ex-Barrenjoey student), Mr Mick Miller (motivational speaker) as well listening to speakers on study tips, the HSC and ATAR and ‘planning for their future’ with Mr Moylan (Careers Advisor) and Ms Cassandra Kennedy (DP).

I would like to congratulate all those involved in the day, the parents who attended, the students who participated, the staff who assisted and the presenters on the day. Behind the scene Ms Kersten and Ms McKay were the driving force and I would like to personally congratulate them on their meticulously detailed organisation.

This event allows parents to gain an understanding of how their child is progressing, while providing a unique opportunity to engage with them on ‘affirming a direction’ for the remainder of their course.

Ms Kennedy and I will now be interviewing Year 12 this week to discuss individual progress, removing barriers and goal setting.

YEAR 12… THE MIDPOINT OF THE HSC YEAR

Year 12 received their school reports as part of the Report Day last Friday.

Conducting interviews with all Year 12 students combined with the Parent Teacher Night this week and the information-packed reporting process allows us to tailor a non-judgemental learning plan specific to the individual student while assisting them in setting realistic goals in a caring and supportive environment. The Semester One Reports for the 107 Year 12 students, with a mean Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.6 were very pleasing with a number of individual highlights.

25 students received a GOLD Principal’s Award by achieving a GPA of 4.2 or above.

24 students received a SILVER Principal ‘s Award by achieving a GPA of 3.6 or above.

20 students received a REC (Respect, Effort, Challenge) award by having 100% of their profile as Always or Usually participating in their learning. GOLD Principal AWARD recipients Max Barry Rachel Birrell Nicholas Bradhurst Julia Cole Ricki Colville Ben Cramer Michaela Curnow Isabelle Fayle Elisa Flanet Claire Goozee Mali Hole Scarlett Ingham Robert (Sipei) Jia Eliza Nay Potter Lilla Obradovic Charlotte Oliver Emma Papin Jade Patterson Jack Phillips Benjamin Reay Luka Simonetti Zoe Van Druten Caroline Wang Ethan Whereat Ella Woolcott SILVER Principal AWARD recipients Thomas Badger Jackson Baker Benjamin Ballinger Amy Bendixen Bailey Buskermolen Zara Coburn Tasman Couston Matthew Crawford Charlie De Jager Marcus Doyle Antony Hawke Finn Heath Georgia Klemes Bailey Mabbott Sam Macarthur Jamie Manning Alex Moran Max Oughtred Connie Phillips Charlie Phipps Shakirra Sadrinna Bailey Strang Evan Turner Cameron Neale REC AWARD recipients Max Barry Rachel Birrell Nicholas Bradhurst Zara Coburn Julia Cole Ricki Colville Tasman Couston Ben Cramer Elisa Flanet Claire Goozee Mali Hole Robert (Sipei) Jia Cameron Neale Lilla Obradovic Emma Papin Connie Phillips Charlie Phipps Oskar Smith Zoe Van Druten Caroline Wang

As you know we acknowledge the contribution students makes to their learning is paramount to the overall success of their education. In recognition of students’ efforts the 20 REC Award recipients in Year 12 are recognised below. Excellent result Year 12 – well done! WORLD RECORD ATTEMPT UPDATE

As we wait for official word from The Guinness Book Of World Records on our recent attempt at setting a world record an ex-student sent me information on another record that Barrenjoey set!

Back in 1980, Barrenjoey’s epic water polo team coached by Mr Watson played Forest High at the Aquatic Centre for 24 hours and 10 minutes setting the record for the longest ever water polo match at the time. Impressively this record made it into the 1985 Guinness Book itself, sadly, however, the record is written as “two teams from the Manly-Warringah at French’s Forest, NSW, 3-4 Oct 1980”.

Wow, how great is that? Two World Records now for Barrenjoey!

LIFELINE & CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations this week to a number of our surfers who are raising money for Lifeline. The North Avalon Surfriders Association (NASA) have got behind the Lifeline Classic which is a tag team surfing event to raise funds for Lifeline .

I was told last week that the North Avalon group set an ambitious target of $10,000 and have raised in excess of $6,000 so far.

In this event the team of surfers that raises the greatest funds gets first pick of the professional surfers to join their team at the actual event on Sunday April 30 at Dee Why Beach.

Here is the link for the event:

Well done to Blaze Roberts, Jack Barripp, Hunter Roberts, Sam Partington, Van Whiteman and Arch Whiteman for doing a great job for this worthy cause.

Have a great week... Ian Bowsher

GOLD DUKE OF ED SNOWY MOUNTAIN ADVENTURE

Last week, whilst many Barrenjoey families were enjoying the soothing, sound of rainfall thundering down onto their tin roofs, a group of 29 students, took to the remote regions of Kosciuszko National Park.

Mr Ilsley and Miss Attard went along as the token geriatrics. The group started from the Tooma Dam, not sure where Tooma is….don’t worry you’re not alone. It’s somewhere south of Mt Selwyn Snowfields.

The first couple of days was some of the wettest walking we had seen in the program for some time. Fortunately, upon arrival at Valentine’s Hut the sun came out and we could dry our socks, shoes and souls by the fire.

My heartfelt congratulations to the students on their efforts and thanks to Louisa Attard for her help, efforts and good humour. As you can see the students had a great time. Mr Richard Ilsley

In space in zero gravity conditions flames are not the same shape that we are used to seeing them.

On Earth smoke and air heated by the flame rise up as gravity pulls cold air down making the flame appear to dance upwards.

Without gravity the flame spreads out in a spherical bubble around the wick. DOWNLOAD YOUR SCHOOL APP NOW Instructions for installing the Barrenjoey High School APP from your device
