Kailash Manasarovar Yatra to begin from 8th June  The annual Kailash Manasarovar Yatra (organized by the External Affairs Ministry) will be held from 8th June to 8th of September.  This year 2996 applicants (2256 male & 740 female) had successfully registered online at the website for the Yatra. Centre issues drought advisory to 6 states, asks them to use water judiciously  Centre has issued a drought advisory to Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu.  The drought advisory is issued to states when the water level in reservoirs is 20 per cent less than the average of live water storage figures of the past 10 years. China blocked all language editions of Wikipedia  China has broadened its block of online encyclopedia Wikipedia to include all language editions.  According to a report by the Open Observatory of Network Interference (OONI), China has started blocking all language editions of Wikipedia last month.  China's online censorship apparatus 'Great Firewall' blocks a large number of foreign sites in the country, such as Google, Facebook and The New York Times.  Wikipedia was launched on January 15, 2001, by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger.  It is the largest and most popular general reference work on the World Wide Web and is one of the most popular websites by Alexa rank as of April 2019. CoP meetings of Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions held in Geneva  The joint meetings of three conventions on chemicals and waste was held in Geneva, Switzerland from 29 April to 10 May 2019.  The 3 conventions included:  14th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (CoP) to Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal (CoP 14)  9th meeting of the CoP to Rotterdam Convention on the Prior Informed Consent Procedure for Certain Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides in International Trade and  9th meeting of the CoP to Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants.  The theme of the meetings 2019 was “Clean Planet, Healthy People: Sound Management of Chemicals and Waste”. Taiwan becomes the first country in Asia to legalise same-sex marriage  Taiwan has approved a bill legalizing same-sex marriage, a landmark decision that makes the self- ruled island the first place in Asia to pass gay marriage legislation. ECONOMY RBI directs NBFCs with asset size greater than Rs.5000 crore to appoint a CRO  The Reserve of India has directed the Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFCs) with asset size of more than Rs.50 billion (Rs 5000 Crore) to appoint a Chief Risk Officer (CRO).  This has been done for best risk management practices. The CRO is required to function independently so as to ensure highest standards of risk management.

SIDBI launches Scheme for.12.2018 Assistance to New Age Fin-Tech NBFCs  Small Industries Development.2018 (SIDBI) has launched a Scheme for Assistance to New Age Fin-Tech NBFCs registered as Investment and Credit Company (ICC) with the RBI. It has been launched on.11.2018 pilot basis.  SIDBI will extend financial assistance of up to Rs. 10 crore to new-age fintech non-banking finance companies (NBFCs) engaged in financing small businesses and other income-generating activities  Fintech NBFCs are digital loan companies. They leverage information technology to provide fast and convenient access to funding. RBI imposed a monetary penalty of Rs 1 crore on Bank  Nainital Bank fails to fully automate the non-performing asset (NPA) identification process, despite specific directions issued in this regard.  The Nainital Bank Limited is registered as a scheduled with (RBI). launched Credit Card in partnership with Citi Bank with Universal Unlimited Cashback  Indian company Paytm has tied up with American card company Citibank to launch a credit card called „Paytm First Card‟.  The card will offer minimum assured one per cent “universal unlimited cashback” on all transactions to customers along with no restrictions on earning categories.  Paytm First Card will have an annual fee of Rs. 500, with the facility of a full waiver of annual fee on spends exceeding Rs 50,000 per year.  It is the first of its kind card launched in India by Citi as well as the first white-label credit card to offer unlimited one per cent cash-back. Kerala CM ringed bell at London Stock Exchange for listing of KIIFB’s masala bonds  The Chief Minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan, rang the bell at London Stock Exchange for listing of Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board‟s (KIIFB) masala bonds.  Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board is the first state-owned entity to issue masala bonds. Kerala is also the first state in India, to issue masala bonds.  KIIFB has raised Rs 2,150 crore through masala bonds at a fixed interest rate of 9.723% per annum. BSE launched Mutual Funds app BSE StAR MF  BSE has launched „BSE StAR MF‟ app to enable more participation in mutual funds and help mutual fund distributors process transactions faster.  BSE StAR MF mobile app supports real-time client registration and paperless transactions, creates and uploads mandate for SIPs, generates the basket of multiple orders, tracks and allows the distributor to analyse his business at his fingertips. HDFC Capital launched 'HeART'to mentor real estate technology companies  HDFC Capital Advisors (a subsidiary of HDFC Ltd) has launched a new initiative called 'HDFC Affordable Real Estate and Technology Program (HeART) to mentor, partner and invest in real estate technology companies.  The HeART will support businesses which are innovating and building technology solutions to enhance the supply of affordable housing. Cricket World Cup 2019 teams to have dedicated anti-corruption Officer  The International Cricket Council has appointed a dedicated anti-corruption officer attached with all the 10 participating teams to deliver a corruption-free tournament.  The 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup is the 12th edition of the tournament that is scheduled to be hosted by England and Wales from 30 May to 14 July 2019. AWARDS AND HONOURS Dr P.K. Mishra conferred with prestigious Sasakawa Award 2019  United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) conferred Sasakawa Award 2019 for Disaster Risk Reduction to Dr Pramod Kumar Mishra, Additional Principal Secretary to Prime Minister of India.  The award was announced at the Award Ceremony during the ongoing 6th Session of Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR) 2019 at Geneva.  The United Nations Sasakawa Award is the most prestigious international award in the area of Disaster Risk Management.  A total grant of USD 50,000 is distributed among the winners which can be either organizations or individuals.  The theme of the 2019 Sasakawa award was “Building Inclusive and Resilient Societies”.

MISCELLANEOUS ICGS Vigraha Decommissions at Visakhapatnam After 29 Years of Service  The Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Vigraha was decommissioned at the coast guard jetty in Visakhapatnam.  ICGS Vigraha was a frontline offshore patrol vessel that was in service for 29 glorious years from 1990 to 2019. Indian Navy successfully test-fires MRSAM missile  The Indian Navy has successfully test-fired a Medium Range Surface to Air Missile (MRSAM). MRSAM will enhance anti-air warfare capability of the Indian Navy.  The test-firing of the missile was undertaken on the western seaboard by Indian naval ships Kochi and Chennai.  The DRDO has jointly developed the missile in collaboration with Israel Aerospace Industries. The MRSAM has been manufactured by Bharat Dynamics Limited. India sets Guinness World Records of ‘largest laundry lesson’ with 400 participants  India has achieved the Guinness World Records certificate for the largest laundry lesson with 400 young Indian men participating across the country to learn laundry lessons. Obituaries Former swimming champion M B Balakrishnan Passed Away  Former South Asian Games gold-medalist and Swimming Champion MB Balakrishnan passed away in road accident in Chennai. Former Australian PM Bob Hawke Passes Away at 89  Former Prime Minister of Australia and Labor Party leader Bob Hawke, passed away. He was 89.  He was the longest-serving Labor Party Prime Minister who served from 1983 to 1991.
