End September 2019 Issue No.09 1. PRINCIPAL’S CORNER

In September we celebrated Heritage Month under the theme: “Cel- ebrating ’s Literary Classics in the Year of Indigenous Lan- guages”. This month was celebrated through the promotion of traditional attire, cuisine/dishes, diverse cultural expressions and indigenous languages. We also took this opportunity to engage in discussions around what con- stitutes our heritage tangible and intangible, movable and immovable, cultural and natural. Through Heritage Month celebrations, DSACR aims to promote herit- age landscape transformation of the Province, reaffirm the significance of our heritage as part of our national identity, and promote unity and diversity among all of the South African society. People of the Free State must take pride in their heritage and embrace diversity. DSACR encourages our people to cherish their rich and diverse cultural heritage as articulated in the Freedom Charter that, the doors of learning and culture shall be opened and that all the cultural treas- ures of mankind shall be open to all, by free exchange of books, ideas and contact with other lands. Our society must reject xenophobia and all forms of discrimination. We must understand that our dif- ferences as Africans are artificial and we should all be united. Indigenous knowledge systems and cultural education must be passed on to younger generations for preservation. Young people must not be swayed by western ideas at the expense of their own culture. Young people must be taught cultural practices and learn more about their heritage.

Kind regards

Ms LP Mahasa MEC: Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation
