Yau Ma Tei is going through an urban renewal process which creates an interesting mix of the old and the new. There are post-war restaurants, open air flea markets and new residential developments. By studying the various checkpoints in the field trip, we can observe that for any kind of building development, it is essential to establish connections with the local contexts through the localization process. We should rethink the impacts urban renewal has on a neighbourhood with strong local cultures such as Yau Ma Tei, and while upgrading the life quality of residents, effort should also be invested in sustaining the local traditions, which are a valuable part of our intangible heritage with deep roots in history.
