President’s Message Welcome to Michigan Ballet Academy's 2016 Production of . We are thrilled to be returning to the Jenison Performing Arts Center after performing here for the first time last May. We are very pleased with the response from the community and thoroughly enjoy performing in this beautiful facility. A production such as The Nutcracker could not take place without countless hours spent by dedicated students, world-class artistic direction, many generous volunteers, parents, donors, sponsors and a very hard working crew. Michigan Ballet Academy is a non-profit organization whose mission is to deliver the highest quality ballet training in an atmosphere of creativity, challenge, encouragement and integrity. Recent evidence that MBA is fulfilling its mission include the accomplishments of MBA dancers Corinne Jarvis, Breanna Proseus and Rajah. Corinne and Breanna competed at the World Ballet Arts Competition Grand Prix in Toronto, placed first and second, and moved on to the finals in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Corinne won third place in the classical variation division and Breanna received the Best Technique Award. That same weekend, Gabriel Rajah competed in the Youth America Grand Prix in Paris and was invited to dance in the Gala Performance in addition to receiving many scholarship offers from some of the most highly regarded ballet programs in the world. Congratulations to all for your accomplishments! Michigan Ballet Academy’s tuition and ticket sales only cover approximately 70% of the operating costs of our program. We rely on the generosity of donors and sponsors to cover the remainder of the costs to effectively operate MBA. Will you please keep us in mind in your year-end giving plans? Gifts of any amount are welcomed, appreciated and used wisely. Thank you and enjoy the show. David Bellamy MBA Board President

The Nutcracker History

The original production of The Nutcracker premiered in 1892 at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia. The great French choreographer, Marius Petipa, who spent his entire career in Russia, created the scenario. Petipa was noted for his choreography of two other Tchaikovsky ballets: Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake. His assistant, Lev Ivanov, often contributed major sections to Petipa’s ballets. In the case of The Nutcracker, after Petipa thoroughly outlined the story and had Tchaikovsky write music, he fell ill and the entire project was turned over to Ivanov. Interestingly, the first production of The Nutcracker did not meet with great success, and was seldom performed after its premiere. In 1944, San Francisco Ballet became the first American company to produce the entire ballet. Ten years later, George Balanchine produced his now famous version of The Nutcracker. The splendor of Tchaikovsky’s music, the magic and wonder of the story, and the beauty and artistry of the dancers has made The Nutcracker a favorite holiday tradition for all ages.

Synopsis The curtain rises to reveal guests arriving at the home of Dr. and Frau Stahlbaum for their annual Eve party. The magical and eccentric Dr. Drosselmeyer presents gifts to the children, including life-size dolls. He has planned a special surprise for his beloved godchild, Clara Stahlbaum. He presents her with a wonderful Nutcracker doll. Clara is immediately entranced by her strange gift. Clara’s brother, Fritz, is jealous and accidentally breaks her Nutcracker. Dr. Drosselmeyer comes to the rescue and assures Clara that all will be well. The party ends and Clara returns to the darkened living room. She falls asleep, and is visited by three beautiful Dream Fairies who dance with her. As the clock strikes midnight, Clara wakes and strange things start to happen. The grows high above her head. An army of large mice, led by the fierce Mouse Queen, threatens Clara. Clara’s Nutcracker leads the toy soldiers into battle with the mouse army. Just as the Mouse Queen begins to overpower the Nutcracker, Clara throws her slipper at the Queen and saves her Nutcracker. As Clara is overcome with tears, the Nutcracker is transformed into a handsome Prince. He takes Clara on a journey to the Land of Snow where they are welcomed by the Snow Queen and dancing Snowflakes. The Prince escorts Clara to the Land of Sweets, where they are greeted by the Sugar Plum Fairy. Clara is entertained by dancers from many exotic lands: Spain, Arabia, China and Russia. Following the beautiful Marzipan dance, Clara dances with the Bon Bons. She then watches a radiant dance by the beautiful flowers. The Sugar Plum Fairy and the Prince dance for Clara. As the celebration ends in the Land of Sweets, Dr. Drosselmeyer escorts Clara back to her home. Not wanting to let go of the magical feeling of the Land of Sweets, Clara tells her mother of her beautiful journey. Was it a dream?
