ULR Jaguar Land Rover Chris Brown, CEO Zanity 2 / COURTSIDE / KOOYONG.COM.AU KOOYONG.COM.AU / COURTSIDE / 3 PRESIDENT’S REPORT MEMBER'S SERVICES Website and app launch We are pleased to announce the launch of the new Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club website and app. ince the last Courtside much has happened at Kooyong. All Members were sent the Kooyong - Beyond 2020 information and ballot papers and many attended the information night to speak with our architect, Board members and CEO about the proposed work. Over the weeks leading up to the ballot, many also took the opportunity to discuss the project with Board members and our CEO to better understand Sthe many aspects of the project. The subsequent count of the ballot showed strong support by Members with 93% voting in favour of the work. I want to thank Members for your overwhelming support of the plan that will deliver significantly more car parking and new and improved facilities for Members to enjoy. Since the vote closed the initial work to remove sections of the stadium has commenced. Demolition of those parts of the stadium added in the 50's and 60's has revealed the beauty of the stadium as it was in the 1930's and we will now resurface the parking areas around the stadium and take advantage of the extra space until the next stage commences. Our building working group has been progressing detailed design of future works and has identified preferable ways to deliver the stages to follow. Having considered the scope of work, cost efficiencies and impact on Members, the Board have determined to delay the commencement of construction until early next year to progress the car park and extended clubhouse facilities as one project. We anticipate some economies will be achieved and the construction time reduced as a result and there will be less inconvenience to Members across the time of construction with work likely completed by the same date. On the competitive tennis level, Kooyong Foundation scholarship player Cooper White represented Australia as a representative in the junior Davis Cup and was undefeated

    Western & Southern Open Defending Champions Headline Doubles Fields CINCINNATI (Aug. 11, 2020) – Both the women’s and men’s defending champions are among the initial entries to play doubles at the 2020 Western & Southern Open, which will be held Aug. 20-28 at the USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Center in New York. The 2019 WTA doubles winners – Lucie Hradecka and Andreja Klepac – are joined by the ATP Tour champions – Ivan Dodig and Filip Polasek – to headline the early entries. Other notable entries on the women’s side include the teenage pairing of Cincinnati’s 18-year-old Caty McNally and 16-year-old Coco Gauff. Dubbed “McCoco,” the duo won a pair of WTA titles in 2019 – at Washington, D.C. and Luxembourg – and reached the US Open Round of 16. Elise Mertens and Aryna Sabalenka, who finished 2019 atop the WTA Porsche Race to Shenzen as the season’s No. 1 team, are also in the field. Reigning Australian Open singles champion Sofia Kenin, a 21-year- old American, has entered with former Western & Southern Open singles and doubles winner Victoria Azarenka. The top two teams in the ATP Tour doubles race are entered in the men’s draw. The No. 1 team of Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah is returning after reaching two straight Western & Southern Open finals.     Sports Authority of India Bopanna-Sharan assured of silver; Ankita takes bronze; Good start in men’s golf Jakarta/ Palembang, August 23: The morning session of the fifth day of the 18th Asian Games brought good tidings from the tennis courts as Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan made the final of the men’s doubles, while Ankita Raina picked up a bronze despite losing her semi-final to top-seeded Chinese Zhang Shuai. In shooting, 15-year-old Shardul Vihan had entered the final of the men’s Double Trap scheduled for later in the afternoon. In men’s golf, which began on Thursday, 17-year-old Aadil Bedi got off to a fine start with a 3-under 69 that placed him Tied-4th in the four-round competition, which will conclude on Sunday. There are four medals at stake, individual in men and women and the team events. Among girls, the best Indian was Diksha Dagar, whose 1-under 71, positioned her Tied 8th. Tennis – Rohan Bopanna and Divij enter men’s doubles final; Ankita takes bronze India’s top-seeded men’s doubles pair Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan entered the gold medal match of the men’s doubles event, beating Japan’s Kaito Uesugi and Sho Shimambukuro 6-4, 3-6, 10-8 in 72 minutes.     The All-Rounder: a memoir of Fremantle sportsman Arthur Marshall by Roger Underwood The champion sportsman who excels in several sporting disciplines is a well-known phenomenon. Don Bradman, for example, was also the South Australian squash champion and a scratch golfer; Test fast bowler Ray Lindwall also played first grade rugby league in NSW and was a top sprinter. Western Australians who were multi-disciplinary champions include Keith Slater, who played Test cricket and football, cricket and baseball for WA, Derek Chadwick who played football and cricket with distinction for WA, and Rick Charlesworth, an Olympic hockey player and also a State cricketer. Fremantle all-rounders of note include John Baguley, who was an Olympic long and triple-jumper, played rugby for WA and league football for East Fremantle, and Merv Cowan who was captain of the Fremantle A Grade cricket team and the East Fremantle League football team, a State water polo player and State breaststroke swimming champion. The phenomenon is easily understood. Champion sportsmen share key physical and mental attributes: they are naturally athletic, they have exceptional hand-eye coordination and lightning reflexes, are highly competitive, and they have that special inner strength known as “the will to win”. This is best demonstrated in the champion who ‘wins ugly’ – sporting lingo for the ability to dig deep and find a way to win even when injured or having an off-day. The champion who performs at the elite level in several disciplines is rarer today than in earlier eras. Modern sporting champions tend to specialise. They choose to become a full-time AFL footballer, a Test cricketer, or a swimmer or golfer, and they do this while still a teenager.

  • TOPS Sanctions Tennis Player Rohan Bopanna's Participation In
    TOPS sanctions tennis player Rohan Bopanna’s participation in tournaments from January to June at cost of approximately 30 lakhs New Delhi, May 19: Indian tennis men’s doubles player Rohan Bopanna has had his proposal to play 11 tournaments from January to June 2021 accompanied with his coach Scott Davidoff and physio Gaurang Shukla sanctioned by the Mission Olympic Cell in a meeting held earlier today. Bopanna is currently ranked world number 39 in the men’s doubles rankings and a semifinalist at the 2016 Rio Olympics. The total amount sanctioned for Bopanna’s participation in these tournaments is approximately Rs. 27.61 lakhs. Bopanna has already received Rs. 1.24 crores from TOPS through the current Olympic cycle. The committee has also sanctioned the proposal of men’s tennis doubles player Divij Sharan to play 14 tournaments from January to June. The proposal of Sharan has been sanctioned by the committee at a total cost of approximately Rs. 30 lakhs (including airfare). Prior to this sanction being given, Sharan had received Rs. 80.59 Lakhs in funding from TOPS in the Olympics cycle. Asian champion Vinesh Phogat will continue to train overseas till the Olympic Games in July this year after her proposal to the Target Olympic Podium Scheme, routed through the Wrestling Federation of India was approved, to train in Hungary and Poland after she finishes her high-altitude stint in Bulgaria. Phogat who secured India the 53kg class Olympic quota in September 2019 at the World Championships, will train in Budapest until June 9, travel for the Poland Open (June 9 to 13) and return to Budapest to be based there till July 2.
