This industry includes Dickens's original canon, his novels, adaptations, plagiarisms, and works similar to his, which are referred to as "Dickensian." The adjective "Dickensian" now describes the author's literary brand, which includes Dickens' texts, his image and likeness, as well as the persona he used in his prefaces, letters, and public appearances. While Pykett mentions the modern Dickens industry, this dissertation primarily focuses on Dickens' works during his lifetime, when Dickens had to contend with other people, such as theatre adapters, publishers, and pirates, for control over the Dickens industry in the nineteenth century. In this dissertation, I argue that Dickens intentionally constructed the Dickensian literary brand to confront plagiarists of his works and control his texts in several media. My overarching question is: to what extent and in what way did Dickens control his literary brand? To answer this question, I outline five key strategies that Dickens used to gain control over his brand: first, he sought to defeat plagiarists of his literature in head-on confrontations, which did not work well for Dickens; second, Dickens sought to build a connection with readers, to make them feel as though he was their friend; third, he sought to dominate his publishers and negotiate contracts so that they would increasingly favour himself; fourth, Dickens rebranded himself in hopes of elevating his literary reputation; and, fifth, Dickens self-adapted his works for his Public Readings, using elements of his previous four strategies in the process. Each chapter in this dissertation, except the sixth, focuses on one of the aforementioned five strategies. The sixth chapter and conclusion consider Dickens' literary brand after his death, along with the broader implications of his efforts and others' attempts to replicate his successes. Throughout the dissertation, I demonstrate that Dickens was obsessed with control, especially when it came to his literature. Dickens was a pioneer in constructing a literary brand, and his strategies earned him this sought-after control of his literature while he lived. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I could not have finished this dissertation without the funding I received from the Graduate Teaching Fellowships given to me by the Department of English at the University of Saskatchewan, for which I am very grateful. After writing Sketches by Boz (1833-6), a series of short pieces based on people he saw in and around London, Dickens was asked by the publisher Chapman & Hall to provide words for Robert Seymour's illustrations in a monthly serial. In the original proposal, Seymour's art would dictate Dickens' contributions to this project. Dickens was interested in the money that Chapman & Hall offered him, but he rejected the notion of creating fiction based on whatever Seymour drew. As biographer Edgar Johnson writes, Dickens would only agree to the terms if "instead of his illustrating Seymour, as had been proposed, Seymour should illustrate him" (117). Dickens' confidence impressed William Hall, and he was hired to write the text for The Pickwick Papers. Seymour, however, was frustrated by Dickens assuming larger control of the serialization, and the illustrator and author clashed during a meeting with one another on April 17, 1836 (Johnson 137). Three days later, Seymour committed suicide, ending any future friction between the two. A new illustrator, Robert William Buss, was hired for the third issue of Pickwick, but his artwork was deemed inadequate, and Dickens formed a relationship with the third illustrator, Hablot Knight Browne, or Phiz, that Dickens found satisfactory, both in terms of the art produced and Dickens' ability to dictate what should be illustrated. Moreover, after Browne's hiring, Pickwick became a publishing sensation with the introduction of the character Sam Weller in the fourth issue, and its success grew from that point onward.

    Jack the Ripper: The Divided Self and the Alien Other in Late-Victorian Culture and Society Michael Plater Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 18 July 2018 Faculty of Arts The University of Melbourne ii ABSTRACT This thesis examines late nineteenth-century public and media representations of the infamous “Jack the Ripper” murders of 1888. Focusing on two of the most popular theories of the day – Jack as exotic “alien” foreigner and Jack as divided British “gentleman” – it contends that these representations drew upon a series of emergent social and cultural anxieties in relation to notions of the “self” and the “other.” Examining the widespread contention that “no Englishman” could have committed the crimes, it explores late-Victorian conceptions of Englishness and documents the way in which the Ripper crimes represented a threat to these dominant notions of British identity and masculinity. In doing so, it argues that late-Victorian fears of the external, foreign “other” ultimately masked deeper anxieties relating to the hidden, unconscious, instinctual self and the “other within.” Moreover, it reveals how these psychological concerns were connected to emergent social anxieties regarding degeneration, atavism and the “beast in man.” As such, it evaluates the wider psychological and sociological impact of the case, arguing that the crimes revealed the deep sense of fracture, duality and instability that lay beneath the surface of late-Victorian English life, undermining and challenging dominant notions of progress, civilisation and social advancement. Situating the Ripper narrative within a broader framework of late-nineteenth century cultural uncertainty and crisis, it therefore argues that the crimes (and, more specifically, populist perceptions of these crimes) represented a key defining moment in British history, serving to condense and consolidate a whole series of late-Victorian fears in relation to selfhood and identity.

It became highly popular amongst its readers as soon as Dickens began publishing his serial long novel in Master Humphrey's Clock. It was published in England and also in the United States. Readers in both countries became absorbed in the story as it proceeded and approached its ending. In particular, readers in the latter country were completely crazy about Nell's movements. It is said that the crowd shouted, 'Is Little Nell dead?' unanimously at the port in New York when the ship with the newest issue of the magazine arrived there.' They were shocked at and grieved over Nell's death. In spite of the applause and devotion for this story amongst readers, it was severely criticized by a number of theorists and writers of Dickens's time. Of course, there were also many critics in his time who praised the story and Dickens. According to Ford, Daniel O'Connell 'was so upset by the death scene that he burst into tears and threw the book out the window' (Ford 56). Fielding says, 'Lord Jeffrey, the old critic of the Edinburgh Review, declared there was "nothing so good as Nell since Cordelia" ' (Fielding 64).

BRENNAN OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS INTRODUCTION In the ten years from 1827 to 1837 Charles Dickens rose from 15-year­ old solicitors' clerk to 25-year-old author, known for a remarkably wide range of journalistic and literary work. His firststories and sketches of people and places, contributed to newspapers and magazines from 1833 onwards, were collected as Sketches by Boz in February 1836 and Sketches by Boz: Second Series that December. Subsequently issued­ as Pickwick Papers and Nicholas Nick/eby had been-in twenty monthly parts, in I 839 they were published complete in one volume. Between 1837 and 1839 Dickens edited and contributed to Bentley's Miscellany-a monthly magazine published by Richard Bentley­ wrote the second half of Pickwick Papers, all of Oliver Twist (for serial­ ization in Bentley's Miscellany)--and the first half of Nicholas Nickleby. He had also signed a contract to deliver Barnaby Rudge to Bentley on I January 1840. However, as his friendand biographer John Forster recorded, Dickens felt that his public was 'likely to tire of the same twenty numbers over again'. Unwilling to embark on the composition of another long story 'with all its strain on his fancy',1 he conceived the idea of producing his own weekly periodical of miscellaneous items­ stories, sketches, and satirical commentary on life--organized round an elderly cripple, Master Humphrey, and his friends,and called, with reference to the clock-case in which their work was stored, Master Humphrey's Clock.

In particular, it shows how changes in the primary audience for metropolitan popular culture necessitated dramatic shifts in the tale of serial killing and narratives of violence. Thus, by the nineteenth century, as the lower classes had become the main supporters of both traditional and new genres of entertainment in popular culture, their experience of and fears and anxieties about urban change became intertwined with myths about serial killing and reflected in a new character of the public nightmare, Sweeney Todd, the barber of Fleet Street, who set out to effectively depopulate the capital with his ghastly murder machine.
