The invention of the car has been the turning point in the lives of many

people. It has led to great improvements in transport with people being able

to move about quickly and easily. Roads were built and differentiated from

pavements. The changes were tremendous.

In the beginning, cars were limited to only the wealthy. However, car 5

companies soon realized the opportunity of increasing their profits by making

cars available to a larger proportion of the population. They then began

improving their technology and lowering the costs of making a car.

In later years, it was not enough to provide an affordable car for the

people. The car was also a fashion statement. Half of the American population 10

was below twenty-five years old and had the necessary spending power.

They were looking for something new and hip. The Ford Mustang was the

perfect car for them. Earlier advertising aroused so much interest that more

than five thousand people queued just to have a look at them ustang. It was

a hit! Twenty-two thousand cars were sold on the first day of the sale. The 15

people were attracted to the power steering function and the vinyl seats.

It was the best way to demonstrate a person’s power and status. Men used

it to impress the ladies. On the other hand, the ladies used it to show their

changing status in society. Everyone wanted one and everyone could have

it. It was reasonably priced. Profits soared for the country and a new status 20

symbol had arrived.

Cars have come a long way since then. Today, they are an essential

form of transport everywhere.

Read the passage carefully.

It was almost evening when Mike came for me in his lorry. In it were ten

poles. When I asked him what they were, he looked shocked for a while as

though I should have known one of the most important equipment in

baiting. Then he smiled and told me that I would soon find out. I pursed my

lips, not daring to ask him about the tiny lanterns that were on the floor next 5

to the poles.

Soon, we were manoeuvring our way in our small boat. The water

was calm. There were the occasional bird chirping and cow mooing. Slowing

down near several oak trees, Mike pulled the boat up onto the bank. Taking

an old bucket, he reached down and grabbed handfuls of mud. The smell 10

was overpowering. I could feel my stomach churning but I tried not to show it,

afraid that he would not take me shrimp baiting again. Then things got worse.

He told me that we were going to make bait balls. I was to help him mix the

mud with the equally smelly and roll them into bait balls for the

time we were done, my hands were aching but I was still looking forward to

catching shrimp.

When we were well in the waterway, Mike inserted the poles into the

river, placing a lantern on some of them. Then the bait was thrown in front

of each of the poles. By now, it was too dark to see anything else besides 20

the white poles. They stood out in the dark even without the lanterns. I finally

realized what the poles were for. Later, Mike told me that the shrimp were

also attracted to the light. When it was time, Mike threw in the net. What
