Procedures for School Closings, Cancellations and Postponements

Eastland CUSD #308

With winter approaching, Eastland administrators are preparing in the event that cancellations and postponements are necessary. Decisions on whether to cancel school will be made by Superintendent Hansen, in consult with neighboring districts, the Director of Operations, and various township road commissioners. These decisions will be made either the night before, or the morning of the cancellation. If a decision is made to cancel school due to inclement weather, a Skylert automated phone call distribution will be made. Calls will go to the primary and secondary phone numbers listed for all students enrolled in the school. If you would like to change these numbers, or add additional numbers, this can be done through the Skyward link on the district homepage.

Cancellations will also be communicated to the following radio and television stations: WFPS/WRFL (92 FM), WCCI (100.3 FM), WSDR (1240 FM), WLLT (107.7 FM), and WXXQ/WZOK/WROK (98.6 FM), KWQC TV6, Newschannel 17, WIFR-Channel 23, WQAD TV-8, and 13 WREX-TV.

Finally, cancellations will be posted on the District website at www.eastland308.com under the link on the homepage titled “cancellations.” If school is going to start late, or dismiss early due to inclement weather, the same process of automated phone calls and media contacts will be used. Extra- and co- curricular event cancellations and/or postponements will be communicated in the same ways.

As a reminder to students using in-town bus stops, winter weather often means that buses will travel slower than normal. Sometimes we have had buses stopped due to having a wheel in a bank, or not being able to climb a grade on an icy section of road. This can result in delays for buses getting to their destinations. If your student typically waits at an in-town bus stop, parents should prepare for the possibility that the bus would be late in arriving. On particularly cold days, some suggestions would be to drive the student to the stop and wait in the car, or to drive the student directly to the school where he/she can wait inside the building until the shuttle buses arrive.

Please use caution when driving this winter, particularly in school zones where students may be walking on foot. If you have any questions or want to make a change to your phone contacts, feel free to contact the school offices.
