Annual Report 2018 Annual Report 2018 1968 The Johor State Economic Development Corporation (JSEDC) was established by the Government of Johor under Enactment No. 4, 1968 which was passed on 18 May 1968. On its first day, eight employees propelled JSEDC’s plans to enter the world of agriculture, housing and commerce. Ten years after its formation, JSEDC managed to build up a portfolio of properties valued at more than RM198 million in 1978. In this first decade, the corporation opened up a string of industrial zones located in Pasir 1978 Gudang, Tanjung Agas, Tongkang Pecah, Segamat, as well as the Senai Free Trade Zone which attracted a total of 325 entrepreneurs. JSEDC also owned 20 subsidiaries at this point in its development. After 20 years in operations, JSEDC now owned 77 companies with almost 12,000 employees. The Group also hit significant milestones with Group 1988 revenue surpassing the RM1 billion mark for the first time in 1988 with the Group’s assets in excess of RM1.11 billion. JSEDC took on a new name and it was rebranded as Johor Corporation (JCorp) in 1995. Moving into the third decade, JCorp could not avoid the global economic downturn which began in mid-1997. Nevertheless, JCorp managed to sustain the business in its entirety following its strategy of 1998 conducting its core businesses in US dollar. Drawing lessons from such a crisis, it demanded a reevaluation of the organisation’s structure, systems, strategies and governance. 2008 Pencapaian After 40 years in operations, JCorp’s achievements were extraordinary with its subsidiaries KFC Holdings (Malaysia) Berhad and Sindora Berhad which saw Jubli Emas their respective share prices reaching RM16 and experiencing a hike of 27 per cent (pc) on the Bursa JCorp Malaysia listing. This important instrument of development for the Johor State, has for five decades, proven its pivotal role in boosting the state’s economic standing. I would like to express my heartfelt congratulations to JCorp for achieving a significant milestone on 18 May 2018 - celebrating 50 years since it was established. This celebration was made even more notable with the launch of JCorp’s new logo which is symbolic of its determination to position itself on the domestic front or even in the international arena. The acquisition will enable us to be an integrated water and power producer in the global arena and allow us to compete more effectively in these fast growing markets.” 1 MMC Group is actively growing its international power and water business. The Group is currently involved in the 900 MW and 1,030,000 m3/day Shuaibah independent water and power project in Saudi Arabia and a 200,000 m3/day seawater desalination plant in Algeria. The Group also has interests in the Central Electricity Generation Company in Jordan and the Dhofar Power Company in Oman.

Since then, both conflict and compromise have occurred among the Europeans, Malays and Chinese, as well as other regional minorities, resulting in two regional dichotomies: (1) socially, the indigenous (Malays) vs. the outsiders (Europeans, Chinese, etc.); (2) politically, the rulers (Europeans and Malay nobles) vs. those ruled (Malays, Chinese). These features have a direct impact on economic development. A retrospective survey of regional political development and demographic features are therefore needed to provide a context for the later analysis of economic development. 1. Political development The formation of Singapore, Johor and the Riau Islands was far from a sudden event, but a long process starting with the decline of the Johor-Riau Sultanate in the late eighteenth century. In order to reveal the coherency of regional political transformations, the point of departure of this political survey begins much earlier than the researched period here.     State-Owned Enterprise (SOE): The Role of SOE Entrepreneurship in Nation-Building Efforts, 1970-2014 Fary Akmal Osman Since the early twentieth century, the study of entrepreneurship has been inspired by the Schumpeterian concept of entrepreneurship as innovator as well as an agent of change in the economy. Many emerging economies, particularly in Asia, established state-owned enterprises (SOE) as a national development strategy. Today, many SOEs operate using a variety of approaches and play active roles, including as cross-border investors. There are several SOEs in Malaysia at the federal and local government levels. This paper analyses the reasons for these SOE’s outstanding performance, focusing on the relationship between SOEs and entrepreneurship, the role of SOEs in cultivating local entrepreneurs, the characteristics embedded in Johor Corporation (JCorp) and how entrepreneurship changed over time. As a state enterprise in Malaysia, JCorp adopted a unique business position and investment strategy to become a major global player in its core enterprises. This study reveals that JCorp acting as an SOE entrepreneur successfully built an organisation with more than 250 local companies in various business sectors and services incorporated under a single umbrella. There are 379 directors within the group and a total workforce of about 63,000 people. Tremendous efforts were made by the SOE to educate Malay entrepreneurs and professionals through the enhancement of knowledge and skills, networking, sharing of experience, and management expertise. Introduction This research is motivated by the common observation in many countries, and throughout Asia that state-owned enterprises (SOEs) have performed poorly or failed to perform at all.

While it’s the most populous state in the country, tourism has taken a back seat to economic development (see the boxed text, p257 ) leaving the state with some great off-the-beaten-path destinations for those who are up to the challenge. Some of Malaysia’s most beautiful islands, within the Seribuat Archipelago, lie off the state’s east coast. They attract their fair share of Singaporean weekenders, but remain near empty during the week. Many of these islands are prime dive territory, with similar corals and fish that you’ll find at popular Tioman Island ( p274 ) but with fewer crowds. These islands are also blessed with some of the finest white-sand beaches in the country, which fringe flashy turquoise waters and wild jungles. For more adventure head to Endau-Rompin National Park or climb the eponymous peak at Gunung Ledang National Park. These jungles offer the same rich flora, (very elusive) fauna and swashbuckling action that visitors flock to experience at Taman Negara in Pahang, but JOHOR JOHOR once again crowds are rare. Anywhere you go to in the state beyond the capital will involve some determination: either by chartering a boat or joining a tour. The effort, however, is well rewarded. In Malaysia, LULC mapping often emphasized on municipal level and a few on state and national levels. While, mapping in detail level such as village scale is still in dearth. Hence, this study aims to map the LULC changes in a village scale at urban, suburb and rural areas of Muar. Latest available Geographic Information System (GIS) spatial data year 2010 were obtained from Department of Agriculture Muar. The processing methods mainly involve the operation of GIS and Google Earth. We calculated the percentage of urbanization for every sub-district and selected three plots to compare the LULC changes in year 2010 and 2015, a five years’ interval. Results showed that urban area, Bandar Maharani has changed slightly in term of overall LULC. For Sungai Terap, agricultural land has greatly declined because it was converted to barren land and open space for new housing, industrial areas and commodity’s plants.

Analyzing the trend of climate change is very important in identifying the pattern of changes because it can give an initial overview for future analysis. In this study, trend analysis was carried out to study the pattern of changes for five climate change parameters, such as total amount of monthly precipitation (mm), monthly average temperature (°C), monthly average global radiation (MJm–2), monthly average wind speed (m/s) and monthly average humidity (%) during the period of 1974 to 2010. Comparisons were made between two research stations, which were the Senai International Airport and Kluang Meteorological Stations. In this study, the Mann-Kendall trend test and Sen’s slope estimator test were used to identify the monotonic trend for these climate change parameters. As a result of this analysis, the precipitations showed no trend for both locations and the radiation showed no trend in Kluang from both analyses. Meanwhile, other parameters in Senai and Kluang showed a monotonic trend, according to the Tau value (Z) and the Sen’s slope value. The temperature shows a positive trend for both locations.
