Conducting Studies Conference 2016 24th – 26th June St Anne’s College University of Oxford Conducting Studies Conference 2016 24-26 June, St Anne’s College WELCOME It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to St Anne’s College and the Oxford Conducting Institute Conducting Studies Conference 2016. The conference brings together 44 speakers from around the globe presenting on a wide range of topics demonstrating the rich and multifaceted realm of conducting studies. The practice of conducting has significant impact on music-making across a wide variety of ensembles and musical contexts. While professional organizations and educational institutions have worked to develop the field through conducting masterclasses and conferences focused on professional development, and academic researchers have sought to explicate various aspects of conducting through focussed studies, there has yet to be a space where this knowledge has been brought together and explored as a cohesive topic. The OCI Conducting Studies Conference aims to redress this by bringing together practitioners and researchers into productive dialogue, promoting practice as research and raising awareness of the state of research in the field of conducting studies. We hope that this conference will provide a fruitful exchange of ideas and serve as a lightning rod for the further development of conducting studies research. CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION This chapter consists of background of research, statement of problem, research objective and significance of research, and definition of key terms. 1.1 Background of Research Women stereotype is a view or assessment given to and through women. This view or assessment becomes identity of women usually as a differentiator to the other group, male. As it said by Beauvoir (24) “And the truth is that anyone can clearly see that humanity is split into two categories of individuals with manifestly different clothes, faces, bodies, smiles, movements, interests, and occupations; these differences are perhaps superficial; perhaps they are destined to disappear. What certain is that for the moment they exist in a strikingly obvious way”. As well as it is differences in identity between men and women then it is also affecting the characteristics and roles of each gender. In women stereotype, as women role, women are not considered to afford and need to interfere related to the community at large. It is because women are considered have only for housework job and role. This is also refers to the stereotype that women do not have the ability as well as men. It influences to the view toward women characteristic. Women are not as useful as men because they are just as a small part in community affairs. This causes unequal role for women. It becomes a barrier for women, particularly in the fields of education, employment and marriage. However a lot of works are done by women in various fields in society. It emerges from the desire to get the same rights as men.

IRON SHARPENS IRON: DUETS FOR TWO WOMEN IN THE TEACHING/ INSTRUCTION OF UNDERGRADUATE WOMEN Laurissa Backlin, B.M., M.M. Dissertation Prepared for the Degree of DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS August 2013 APPROVED: Lynn Eustis, Major Professor Richard Sparks, Committee Member Stephen Morscheck, Committee Member Jeffrey Snider, Chair of the Division of Vocal Studies Benjamin Brand, Director of Graduate Studies James C. Scott, Dean of the College of Music Mark Wardell, Dean of the Toulouse Graduate School Backlin, Laurissa. Iron Sharpens Iron: Duets for Two Women in the Teaching/Instruction of Undergraduate Women. Doctor of Musical Arts (Performance), August 2013, 61 pp., 30 figures, bibliography, 77 titles. Duet literature remains largely untapped as a pedagogical tool in the undergraduate voice studio. This dissertation examines the ways in which eight duets for female voices, although not written primarily for pedagogical use, may be used to teach four main areas of voice technique: intonation, vocal agility, legato singing, and dramatic skills. Duets are chosen primarily from the standard repertoire and are in English, German, French, Italian and Latin. The compositional styles range from the Baroque period through the 20th century. Genres include art song, oratorio, and opera. Each chapter focuses on one of the four vocal skills listed above, and includes examinations of two duets whose vocal writing (rhythm, tessitura, intervals, tempi, and text) make them appropriate candidates for pedagogical use in the improvement of that specific skill. Both male and female teachers of singing may utilize this project as a practical resource and model in how to use other duets, including those for other voice types, for similar purposes in their teaching studio.
