Alain Bashung NOTE DE LA RÉDACTION Depuis une quinzaine d’années, une pensée et une représentation du temps se cristallisent autour de l’idée d’accélération. Tandis qu’une production cinématographique importante trouve dans ce changement de rythme un nouveau langage filmique, le concept s’est affirmé dans les sciences sociales, en particulier en Allemagne avec H. Rosa, qui a présenté sur un mode alarmiste la « spirale autoalimentée » dans laquelle l’Occident s’engouffrerait. Cette « critique sociale du temps » a rencontré toute une série d’objections venues des sciences politiques (A. Chollet) et de l’anthropologie du rythme et de la poétique. Elle a néanmoins été politiquement réinvestie aux États-Unis et dans la gauche européenne, avec en particulier le débat suscité par le Manifeste pour une politique accélérationniste d’A. Williams et N. Srnicek. Toutefois, ce débat, mobilisé par l’idée apocalypsienne de « délai » (G. Anders) que réactive le péril écologique, met au second plan de son interrogation l’articulation de l’accélérationnisme (ou des accélérationnismes) à notre « régime d’historicité » (Fr. Hartog) comme son rapport historique à l’eschatologie (R. Koselleck). C’est à ces deux réinscriptions de l’accélération dans un temps plus long qu’entend procéder ce numéro d’Écrire l’histoire, à travers divers champs de la représentation (histoire, sciences sociales, cinéma, art et littérature). Autour d’un long article inédit en français de R. Koselleck traduit par Ph. Forget – « Raccourcissement du temps et accélération. Contribution à l’étude de la sécularisation » –, le dossier « Accélérations » rassemble des entretiens avec A. Chollet, Fr. Hartog et F. Boussouf, et des contributions signées M. Agier, D. Arnaud, C. Coquio, Chr. Delacroix, X. Garnier, M. Goutte, H. Hannouche, D. Henkin, P. Henriet, M. Lagny, M. Larrouture-Poueyto, J. Loehr, A. Markowicz, G. Mazeau, P. Savy, P.‑O. Schut, S. Wahnich, et D. Accélérations Écrire l'histoire, 16 | 2016 6 Avant-propos Catherine Coquio 1 Depuis une dizaine d’années, une pensée du temps humain se cristallise autour de l’idée d’accélération. L’idée était dans l’air depuis longtemps, elle se condense aujourd’hui sous l’effet d’un précipité disciplinaire : les arts, les sciences et la philosophie semblent tous concernés par ce mot devenu central en quelques années. Tandis que le cinéma trouve dans l’augmentation de la vitesse des procédés de dramatisation et d’écriture moteurs, qui rendent sensible l’emballement fou des sociétés et des vies (Magnolia, The Social Network, Birdman, Whiplash…), le concept d’accélération s’est fait une place de choix dans les débats publics et savants, non loin de la mondialisation. Les controverses se sont multipliées autour de la « grande accélération » de l’« anthropocène », concept scientifique émergent qui, proposé en 2000 par le chimiste Paul Crutzen pour désigner l’« escalade » des effets de l’action humaine sur le globe1, s’est diffusé dans les sciences humaines, engendrant à la fois un « négationnisme écologique » et de nouveaux accents apocalyptiques. Paul Virilio, qui s’était fait une spécialité de penser la vitesse dans tous les domaines, est devenu le prophète d’un nouveau livre de l’Exode : à l’art disparaissant et au « citoyen terminal » de la « ville panique » font suite le « Grand Accélérateur » global et ses désastres annoncés2. Pour ou contre l’accélération ? 2 Au même moment s’est fait connaître le travail sociologique d’Hartmut Rosa, qui, dans Accélération (2005) 3 puis Aliénation et accélération (2010) 4, présentait sur un mode alarmiste la « spirale autoalimentée » de trois processus d’accélération emportant nos sociétés : course technologique (internet, trains à grande vitesse…), mutation sociale (mobilité professionnelle, recompositions familiales, obsolescence des objets…), accélération du rythme de vie (multiplication des tâches en un temps réduit, hyperconnexions chronophages, etc.). Leur convergence, dit-il, impose à tous une « loi » et même un « totalitarisme de l’accélération », rétrécissant l’« expérience » à proportion qu’on veut vivre mieux et plus. En outre, elle ruine le processus de délibération et de décision propre aux démocraties : « La conséquence la plus sérieuse de cette crise du temps en politique, conclut Rosa, est la remise en cause de son Écrire l'histoire, 16 | 2016 7 ambition à modeler l’histoire. […] Le temps de la politique est révolu5. » Le phénomène relève donc lui aussi d’une catastrophe, loin de l’« amour du mouvement » propre aux modernités antérieures, dont il hérite pourtant comme « modernité tardive ». 3 Cette « critique sociale du temps » a rencontré une série d’objections du côté des sciences sociales et politiques6 comme de l’anthropologie poétique7. On a critiqué une vision simplificatrice de la modernité, une systématique sociale périmée, la dimension trop peu présente du langage, l’oubli des polyrythmies et, plus que tout, le catastrophisme dépolitisant de cette description. On s’est mis à regarder le grand mot de plus près, sinon de travers : « Vous avez dit “accélération” ? » demandait Jean Birnbaum en préface du collectif Où est passé le temps ?, issu d’un forum organisé par Le Monde en 2011. A. Goddard This thesis offers a close examination of the word “secular” from the fifth century to the seventeenth century and examines its origins and the change in its usage over the course of the medieval and early modern periods, primarily in England. Existing scholarship on the idea of the secular has ignored the meaning of the word and how its usage adapted to social and political change. I argue that “secular” is not a static concept nor does it simply signify a society stripped of religion, but rather, the term occupies a complex neutral space that shifts within changing and evolving demarcations between sacred and temporal circumstances. Furthermore, I argue that the secular has had a long-standing place in Christain thought, though its role changed to meet the historical needs of Christain societies. In addition to undertaking a close reading of primary sources and foundational thinkers, I utilized text analysis software throughout my research in order to establish statistical data that tracks the changes in usage of the term from 1473-1603. September 2014 Acknowledgments This study on the theological anxiety of political principles reflects my personal anxiety regarding the legitimate origin of authority and its commitment with justice. Although my original intention was to show the rebellious stream in the traditional views of Christianity and Islam, I finally negotiated into a more moderate approach to both traditions showing the struggle between the competing political and theological principles of justice and obedience. Although all this discussion on justice and the questioning of authority may sound rebellious, this dissertation took shape and was finished while building a more traditional project: my !beautiful family. I want to thank my committee, and especially to acknowledge the role of my mentor and advisor, Professor Juan Campo, who trusted and encouraged my self motivation and my capacity to overcome difficulties.
