Coached by the legendary Johnny Vaught, the 8 1962 team not only claimed a 10-0 season, they also brought home 9 an SEC crown and a national championship title, defeating Arkansas 10 in the Sugar Bowl 17-13; and S. C. R. No. 597 *SS02/R1085* ~ OFFICIAL ~ N1/2 13/SS02/R1085 PAGE 1 (tb\tb) 11 WHEREAS, the Rebels 1962 Team was awarded the National 12 Championship by the Billingsley Report, Litkenhouse and Sagarin 13 Ratings; and 14 WHEREAS, the Rebels 1962 Team also holds the honor of being 15 the only football team in Ole Miss history to complete the season 16 untied and undefeated. For his efforts, Coach Vaught was named 17 SEC Coach of the Year for the 6th time that same year; and 18 WHEREAS, Glynn Griffing and Louis Guy both served as 19 Co-Captains of the 1962 Ole Miss Rebels; and 20 WHEREAS, the team held its 50-year reunion September 14-15, 21 2012, at The Inn at Ole Miss; and 22 WHEREAS, members of the undefeated and untied Ole Miss 23 Football Team of 1962 recalled their triumphs during an open-panel 24 discussion with ESPN Writer Wright Thompson in the Overby Center; 25 and 26 WHEREAS, the Rebels' undefeated season was set against the 27 backdrop of the Civil Rights Movement taking place on their own 28 campus as James Meredith, aided by the United States government, 29 was attempting to be the first black student to enroll at the 30 university. In spite of the school's near self-destruction over 31 integration, the team managed the most remarkable season seen in 32 Oxford before or since. It was the team that made a generation of 33 Mississippians love football. It was also an under-reported team, 34 just a quick story here and there; and S. C. R. (Wobble) Davidson, Assistant Coach; Junie Hovious, 69 Secondary Coach; Frank (Bruiser) Kinard, Offensive Line Coach; Jim 70 (Buster) Poole, Defensive Line Coach; Ray Poole, Assistant Coach; 71 and Tom Swayze, Assistant Coach; and 72 WHEREAS, Johnny Vaught, a Line Coach under Head Coach Harold 73 (Red) Drew and a former All-American Guard at Texas Christian 74 University, remained in Oxford as Head Coach in 1947 and led the 75 Ole Miss program to national prominence over the next 24 years. 76 Vaught's squads, however, didn't stop at just winning league 77 titles, as the Rebels claimed a share of 3 National Championships 78 in 1959, 1960 and 1962. Under Vaught's guidance, Ole Miss made 79 Hemingway Stadium (later named Vaught-Hemingway Stadium) one of 80 the toughest places in the nation for opposing teams to play. In 81 his 24 seasons at the helm, Vaught's teams compiled an impressive 82 57-6-2 record in Oxford for an astounding 89.2 winning percentage. 83 From 1952-1964, the Rebels put together an incredible 34-game S. No. 597 *SS02/R1085* ~ OFFICIAL ~ 13/SS02/R1085 PAGE 4 (tb\tb) 84 homefield unbeaten streak (33-0-1), including 21-straight 85 victories from 1952-1959; and 86 WHEREAS, it is historically relevant that we honor the 87 members of this great 1962 team, who played a role in alleviating 88 the events that took place on the Ole Miss Campus and throughout 89 Mississippi, and who symbolize the pride that Ole Miss fans take 90 in the school's football program to this day: 91 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF 92 MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That 93 we do hereby pay tribute to the members of the 1962 Ole Miss 94 Rebels Football Team on the 50th Anniversary of their National 95 Championship Season and extend the best wishes of the Legislature 96 to these players and coaches and their families on this occasion. 97 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to 98 representatives of the 1962 Ole Miss Football Team, transmitted to 99 the Chancellor of the University of Mississippi and the Board of 100 Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning, and made 101 available to the Capitol Press Corps.     2015 INDUCTEE DONALD SANFORD ONALD WAS BORN AND RAISED IN PARRISH, ALABAMA, where he Dfollowed in the footsteps of his uncle Bruce Jones, a member of the “Half Century All-Time Great Players at the University of Alabama.” Donald started every game in his career at Parrish where he played for coach Edward Childs. His senior year, they amassed a record of 11-2-1 beating Birmingham powerhouse Woodlawn 13-6 in a game played at Legion Field. He signed to play football at the University of Alabama where he was destined to find greatness. Donald was a three year letterman who played for both Wallace Wade and Frank Thomas at Alabama. He played on the Crimson Tideʼs last Southern Conference Championship team (1930). Donald was key figure in Wadeʼs last game at Alabama where he anchored the offensive line in Bamaʼs 24-0 win over Washington State in the 1931 Rose Bowl which clinched Bamaʼs 10-0 season and gave the Tide their fourth National Championship. While at the University of Alabama, he played with some of the all-time great players such as: Don Hutson, Dixie Howell, Johnny Cain, and Fred Sington. Donald came back to Walker County in 1947 as an assistant football coach and head basketball coach for the Walker County High School Vikings. He then took over the reigns as the head coach of the football team for the 1948-49 seasons. He had the unique opportunity to obtain the authentic football from the 1931 Rose Bowl victory which became a family heirloom and is still in the possession of the family today.

Even during the war years, as well as through the Great Depres sion, each fall Horned Frog football squads have done bat tle on the gridiron each fall. 4BEGINNINGS The newfangled game of foot ball, created in the East, made a quiet and un of­fcial ap pear ance on the TCU campus (AddRan College as it was then known and lo­ cat ed in Waco, Tex as, or nearby Thorp Spring) in the fall of 1896. It was then that sev er al of the col lege’s more ro bust stu dents, along with the en thu si as tic sup port of a cou ple of young “profs,” Addison Clark, Jr., and A.C. Easley, band ed to gether to form a team. Three games were ac tu al ly played that season ... all af ter Thanks giv ing. The first con test was an 8­6 vic to ry over Toby’s Busi ness College of Waco and the other two games were with the Houston Heavy weights, a town team. By 1897 the new sport had progressed and AddRan enlisted its first coach, Joe J. Field, to direct the team. Field’s ballclub won three games that autumn, including a first victory over Texas A&M. The only loss was to the Univer si ty of Tex as, 18­10.
