FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT

The opening of Cats of Africa in March was a wonderful way to celebrate the Zoo’s 40th anniversary. We were able to look back over forty years of continuous growth and progress at the Zoo, made possible by the generosity of our friends and supporters. We continued our work to take new projects through the City process and prepare for the next five to six years.

Our future plans are ambitious! First on the list of major projects are some exciting changes to the home of Santa Barbara’s two largest residents. The renovation of the elephant yard will increase the size of the available space for Sujatha and Little Mac by three times. The public pathways surrounding the new elephant yard will all be regraded and modified to meet ADA standards. The implementation of a newly created landscape plan will enhance the guest experience. The work began this fall and we anticipate construction to be completed by the end of next summer. The dramatic changes in the landscape have already created anticipation of what promises to be a wonderful new home for Sujatha and Little Mac.

Other important projects we will turn our attention to are the Discovery Pavilion (the new education facility to be located adjacent to the Courtyard), the Wave (the new food service/restroom facility on the hilltop), and the highly anticipated exhibit. We also look forward to the renovation of the Channel Island fox exhibit, a project that will be constructed concurrently with the California condor exhibit. The condor exhibit will create an important facility for holding immature condors awaiting a place in the captive breeding program. It will be only the second exhibit in the world where the public can view California condors. That is quite an honor for our Zoo and a wonderful opportunity for our community!

The Board is extremely excited about the future plans for the Zoo and I hope you will find them exciting too. As we celebrate our 40th anniversary, I am deeply grateful for all of the friends over the years that have made the growth and improvement of this Santa Barbara treasure possible.

CONSERVATION & e DONOR’S CIRCLE RESEARCH The Santa Barbara Zoo thanks the following people for generously supporting our The Zoo continued to advance a variety of conservation and research membership program & general operating programs in 2003, enhancing the Zoo’s role among American Zoo budget by becoming members at the Curator’s and Aquarium Association (AZA) institutions as well as other Circle membership level or higher in 2003: conservation organizations. Early in the year, the Zoo initiated a relationship with the US Forest Service (USFS) to facilitate the Executive Circle ($2,500) Barbara & Paul Franz development of a Los Padres National Forest exhibit at the Zoo David Orias and to establish programmatic connections between the Zoo and the USFS, including involving Zoo staff in field conservation. Curator’s Circle ($1,000) Alyce Faye & John Cleese Roberta & Stan Fishman Zoo staff continued to support Channel Island fox conservation Sarah Heath in the field. This year, staff spent several weeks participating in Rich & Luci Janssen Lisa & Richard Knowles fox care on San Miguel Island. In addition, Zoo veterinarians Dr. Anonymous Karl Hill and Dr. Kerry Milliken made emergency visits to the John & Marty Mason islands to treat injured foxes.

In another milestone for the conservation program, the Zoo published the first Channel Island fox studbook in 2003. Alan Varsik, General Curator, manages AZA’s Channel Island Fox THE PHOENIX Population Management Plan, and created the studbook in conjunction with AZA’s Population Management Center. This led SOCIETY vation and our futur to the creation of a comprehensive Channel Island fox master plan that will be used to guide fox management in nationwide. The Santa Barbara Zoo extends heartfelt thanks to these individuals that have made provisions for the Zoo in their estate plans. For the first time, the Santa Barbara Zoo offered a stipend for a full

time internship. In May 2003,Wendy Stanford became the Zoo’s first Anonymous Channel Island Fox Conservation Intern. Ms. Stanford helped facilitate the Ms. Catherine Bordé Zoo’s second Channel Island Fox Husbandry Workshop. As in 2001, the Zoo Shirley & Harry Bordé Ada-Marie Bowers conser hosted a variety of fox caretakers from AZA zoos, the National Park Service, Beatrice & Everett Cain and the Institute for Wildlife Studies, to consolidate what is known about fox Victoria & Joseph Conley husbandry and identify research opportunities. Ms. Stanford assisted in editing Marjorie Ehlen and producing the proceedings and also helped facilitate several research Mr. & Mrs.T. L. Ellis Mr. Richards K. ANIMAL CARE

In March of 2003, the Zoo opened its first new major exhibit since the opening of the gorilla exhibit, Forest’s Edge, in 1996. Cats of Africa was a great success, both for the animals and for our guests. The lions spent time in every part of the exhibit, as intended, and provided our guests with exciting nose-to-nose encounters. The exhibit and holding area, like the renovated gibbon exhibit, proved their management value. The holding area provided an excellent lion introduction area and helped to facilitate a successful pairing of lions with Chadwick and Gingerbread.

After many months of preparation and training, our two elephants, Sujatha and Little Mac, were successfully transferred to the AZA-accredited Chaffee Zoological Gardens to facilitate expansion of the elephant area and improvements to the associated guest paths. This move required careful planning, as the elephants had not been moved since they were brought to the Zoo thirty years ago. Animal care staff worked with consultants and elephant transport professionals to complete a safe transfer.

The all-new gibbon holding area demonstrated its value in 2003. A baby gibbon, Elliot, was hand- reared due to nutritional challenges faced by his mother, and was successfully reintroduced to his gibbon family later in the year. The process of reintroduction included raising Elliot in the gibbon holding building, allowing for a controlled and gradual exposure to his family. As gibbons have a complex assortment of social behaviors, it is critical that infants learn normal gibbon behavior in order to be socially successful. This process would not have been possible in our old facility.

For the first time in ten years our flamingos produced chicks! Five chicks joined the Zoo’s pink flock after intense work by the Animal Care staff to create an ideal nesting situation. Nest building began in the summer and breeding activity continued through the end of year. This was an unusually long season, and even the elephant construction adjacent to the flamingos did not appear to hinder their activity!

After more than two years of intensive medical care, Max, our 34-year-old gorilla, succumbed to a debilitating neurological condition. Although Zoo staff devoted several years to managing Max’s physical and medical care, he died following an investigative procedure that involved the Zoo’s veterinary staff and several medical colleagues. At 34 years old, Max was near the typical life expectancy for male gorillas. Max, the Zoo’s first gorilla, arrived in 1996 from the Topeka Zoo.

ZOO TURNS 40

In 1963, a small collection of animals, maintained on the grounds of the beautiful former Child Estate opened to the public in Santa Barbara. On a site enviable by any zoo in the country, the Child Estate "zoo" had 43 animals and an operating budget of $24,000.

Though they started small, the volunteers that made up the Child Estate Foundation board and who helped raise the start-up money for this modest institution had bigger plans and an eye on the future.

Exhibits started to crop up on the grounds as volunteer labor (Jaycees led the charge!), donated materials, and modest contributions fueled the growth of the Zoo. By 1968, the first train started operating on the grounds and the budget had reached $72,744. In 1970, the first elephant arrived, along with "Dandy Lion", the Zoo's first monarch of the African savannah!

Today the Zoo’s budget has reached $5.6 million and we welcome hundreds of thousands of guests. Looking back over 40 years of continuous growth and progress, it helps us appreciate the significant contributions of time, labor, money and love that shaped one of Santa Barbara's most popular institutions. This year we celebrate the Zoo's rich history and prepare for an exciting future filled with California condors, tigers, snow leopards, and many more wonderful surprises.

COMMEMORATIVE TILE WALL

The Zoo celebrated its 40th Anniversary in 2003. A host of special events marked the occasion, including an exhibit at the Santa Barbara Historical Society Museum, a “Wildlife Begins at 40” Anniversary Party, and special versions of favorite events like Members’ Night and Breakfast with the Animals

To commemorate the community’s involvement, the Zoo commissioned local artist Susan Dunbar to create a beautiful,

donors hand-painted tile wall. The wall, which will be unveiled in 2004, recognizes those individuals, companies, and foundations that supported the Zoo’s 40th Anniversary activities. They are listed below.

GOODBYE TO DEAR ZOO FRIEND

In May of 2003, longtime docent and Board member Diane Pearson lost her courageous battle with cancer. Diane touched so many of us through her countless hours of volunteer service to the Zoo and her passion for education. Diane was a regular supporter of all of our special events and educational programming. She was also a member of the Zoofari Ball Committee and chaired the Volunteer Liaison Committee.

Diane was a native of the Chicago area, and moved to Santa Barbara in the early 80s. Within a year, Diane enrolled in the Zoo’s docent training and was active until her death. Diane is greatly missed by all of her human and animal friends here at the Zoo, and the Santa Barbara community as well.
