Volume 3, Issue 1 2=CA! RELIC HUNTING IN MANADO

I’ve been living in Manado for a fare while now, but I have to confess I’ve never managed to visit the Provincial Museum of Manado (Museum Negeri Manado). So, a friend and I loaded up the car with our 4 kids ranging in ages from 1 ½ through to 8 ½, and headed to the Museum for a morning of exploration. At this point it this probably fair to mention that you can’t really compare the Museum in Manado to those in other countries, largely due to a lack of funding. Given the limited resources, the Manado Mu- seum is probably doing the best it can. There are several replica waruga (ancient burial tombs used by early Minahasan tribes), in the entranceway and in the garden area in front of the museum. If you don’t get a chance to see the real tombs located in Airmadidi, then this surely would be a good opportunity to view these unusual shaped stone sarcophagi. The building itself is spread out and involves a bit of stair climbing, but is easiest tackled by heading left once you enter then up to the 2nd and 3rd floors, across, and then back down again. The displays are scattered amongst each floor in no particular pattern or chro- nological order so it’s best to scout around to

Years of futile search all over the world made my 1st chanced sighting of this tiny boxer crab at Siladen even more memorable. True to its common name, the pugnacious crab found under a piece of rock did not hesitate in using the two anemones of the Bunodeopsis species it clutches in its pincers to fend my camera off! The irony, of course, was that when the crab waved its anemones around, it looked more like MUREX the nautical Mike Tyson imitating a high-school cheerleader shaking pom-poms. The crab’s pincers are evolved specifically for the purpose of holding the anemones, thus, becoming too weak to be used to tear its food apart; to do so, it has to use its next pair of legs. It is widely believed that the boxer crab relies on its anemones to stun prey or even drags them over the substrates to pick up edible substances. The anemones generally don’t survive this type of rough treatment for any significant length of time. When they wither off, the crab simply goes and finds itself some new ones. We were constantly able to find more of this species all over the shallow reef flats of Siladen, Fukui, and Tanjung Pesok. Latest we have heard is that the boxer crabs are now making their appearances in Lembeh Straits! MUREX DIVE RESORT & LIVE ABOARD On some occasions, we saw a few females Address : Jl. Their owl-like eyes, mobile ears, haunting songs, and nocturnal habits reinforce the tarsier’s image as gremlins. These gremlins of the forest are found throughout Asia. But the species found in Sulawesi, T. dianae, T. spectrum, T. pelengensis, T. pumilus, and T. sangirensis are found only in Sulawesi. Sulawesi is a haven for evolutionary scien- tists and wildlife enthusiasts. Sulawesi is an evolutionary mongrel bringing together It is quiet along the black sand beach of Tangkoko forest. The light from the quarter moon seeps through the thick rainforest canopy casting moonbeams across the forest floor. Two high-pitched squeaks emanate somewhere within a fig tree, and a tiny tennis-ball sized tarsier emerges from the tree hole. Suddenly, he flies through the air with its long tail trailing behind, cuts across moon beams and lands on a gecko. It stomps on the gecko’s tail and while grabbing its neck with its right hand, with a quick jerk of the hand, the gecko’s neck is snapped, and dinner is served.
