3 President’s Message

We live in exciting times and I am just talking about our cattle. There are so many new things going on. DNA test- ing for marbling and tenderness was done on our steers in the test and the possibilities are tremendous for this breed. This will be talked about at our annual meeting at the World Beef Expo if you want the entire lowdown. Basically it is simple, our breed has every known genetic marker for marbling and tenderness. This means we can make tremendous progress in these two traits by doing testing and matching animals to breed since no animal has all the traits. I am going to be testing my entire herd using Primestock Genomics carcass quality DNA test. I will be looking for a bull or two that is tested and will help my herd, which should give you incentive to test your bulls for sale. They talked to us at the World Beef Expo last year and that is what started this testing. https://primestockgenomics.com/

They also have a planned mating expectation program, hopefully it will be developed more later. We can’t select for just these two traits though, we have to keep up with everything else that makes our breed great.

The Midwest British White Park Association is holding a field day at my farm June 2, so it will be over by the time you receive this. We will have a social time Friday night, a fitting contest Saturday morning, a talk on showmanship, then a judging contest, lunch, discussion of feedlot test which might have results by then, a pasture walk to dis- 4 cuss rotational grazing, then a lot of goodbyes as every- one heads home. A nationally known judge will be doing the judging. Local FFA and 4H judging teams will be in- vited to come. Some kids will have a chance to work with a calf in the ring for the first time with an adult there to help. It should be a great day.

We will be looking for a great turnout at Quincy again this summer from what I have been hearing also. Look at the dates for our shows, Glenn told me once that the other breeds representative thought we were weird since we get along and help each other. Just come to look and meet other breeders if nothing else, it’s a good time.

8 Breeders Summer Social Field Day June 1st & 2nd at Thistledown Farms Columbus Junction, IA by Jodi Olsen

Hopefully, a new tradition has been started, or better yet a dusty one has been rekindled! The Midwest British White Park Association had their “Breeders Summer Social” Field Day on June 1st and 2nd. Michael and Keenan Todd of Thistledown Farms in Columbus Junction, Iowa graciously hosted the event.

A group of members and their families gathered at the East Farm Friday evening to view cattle, visit, and share a picnic style supper together around a campfire. It was an enjoyable meeting with new breeders, renewing past friendships, and sharing stories. The event was well at- tended with 72 people representing six states.

Satuday morning, the activities started at the Louisa County Fairgrounds. Sam Hulst gave a clipping 9 demonstration. A showmanship presentation was given by John Malone while Emily Hemphill and KaLynn Jones had their heifers in the ring. We are looking forward to watching these young ladies show in the future. Jeff Thompson judged, explained reasons, and answered questions during the Judging Contest, which consisted of three heifers, one steer, and one bull class. Both our British White Park Association youth members and local area 4H and FFA youth participated in the Judging Con- test. Awards and door prizes were handed out. Many of these were donated by Hamby and Dennis and Suzanne Jones.

We then left the fairgrounds and headed across town to Todd’s home while we visited over a picnic lunch. After lunch, Michael Todd explained and answered questions regarding the feedlot results and DNA testing. Rotational grazing was then discussed. Wraping the day up, the home herd of cattle was called up to the yard for viewing.

All in all, the field day was well attended, educational, and fun! A huge “thank you” to the many who donated time, sweat, animals and money to make the day successful!

11 Feedlot Carcass Information Test

We have 52 head on feed this year from six different members. The board approved genetically testing the group for tenderness and marbling. We have some really interesting results from this testing. They called me from Primestock Genomics saying they had never seen this in any other breed, our breed has every known DNA marker for marbling and tenderness. In other words, we can maximize our marbling and tenderness with planned matings. We can select animals to increase these two meat qualities at a rapid rate, but we have to be careful not to breed out some of the quali- ties also. We also have to keep up our other traits, fertility, docil- ity, structural soundness, calving ease, muscling, udder structure, etc. while doing this. This is an opportunity that other breeds can only dream about. Primestock Genomics will be supplying the speaker for our meeting at the national show in Milwaukee. This is an opportunity to find out how best to use this information and go forward with the improvement of our breed. We do not have the actual results from the test at the time this is being written, but the cattle should be harvested in late May. We do have some information such as an average docility score of 1.5 on a scale of 1-6, pretty impressive and verified by an independent party.

The board approved doing a test again this year. We can have two different tests if we get enough entrants. Michael Hahn is trying to get a potload or more of cattle from the east to be entered this fall. It is a chance to find out how well your cattle do in a feedlot setting. You can then make changes in your genetics plan or have a new marketing tool for your other animals. We will accept animals born January 1, 2018 to June 1, 2018. Hopefully more people will have a chance to participate this way. We will also accept animals that are at least 50% or more with a known sire. One animal is all that is needed to participate in this test. The biggest risk is if your animal would die, which is a risk any time you feed cattle. You can check out the health requirements at http://www.tcscf.com/. They have been very good to work with and very accommodating to our

12 needs. We will set a delivery date after we have the animals to be entered. There is an entry fee (deposit) on all entered animals and the entry form will be posted on the association website.

If you would like to participate in the 2018/2019 Carcass Futurity follow the following simple steps. 1. Review the website http://www.tcscf.com/ for health require- ments. 2. If you are from the east and interested in shipping cattle contact Mike Hahn at 845-701-9582. 3. Visit www.whitecattle.org to print the entry forms, complete them and mail them to the association office along with a $20.00 per head reservation fee by September 15, 2018. 4. Make arrangements to deliver your cattle to the feedlot or collection point on the assigned date. We expect the assigned feedlot to be in Iowa and the first delivery to be in October. 5. Questions call the association office at 1-877-900-2333.

This is a great way to learn how your cattle are performing in a feedlot setting!

21 Advantages and Disadvantages of Later Bull Calf Castration by Jennifer Rath

In the United States, about 3 out of every 4 bulls are castrat- ed before reaching 3 months of age. It has become a stan- dard, especially for bulls that are destined for the market.

Is it the right thing to do? Here are the pros and cons of cas- trating bulls later than what is typically recommended.

List of the Pros of Later Bull Castration

#1. There is a boost in testosterone production. Later castra- tion allows a bull to experience what life is like as a bull for a longer time. That can give some bulls an advantage in muscle development.

#2. There can be less fat marbling. Bulls castrated later tend to have less marbling than bulls castrated early. The effect can be seen at 500 pounds, with pronounced effects at 1,000 pounds.

#3. Bulls may grow more rapidly. Delaying castration can yield equitable benefits to the promotion of implants for calves that are castrated in the 30- to 90-day range.

List of the Cons of Later Bull Castration

#1. They put on less weight. Compared to bulls castrated early, later bulls weigh an average of 20 pounds less. They tend to be marketed later as well.

22 #2. It puts more stress on the animal. Bulls that are cas- trated early tend to experience lower stress levels. That results in better health and weight gain, which can enhance the tenderness of the beef produced. Older bulls also under- stand more of what your intent is in castration compared to younger bulls, which can create behavioral concerns.

#3. They sell for less. Compared to steer calves, the price of a 500-pound bull is about $30 less.

The bottom-line here is this: there is enough research out there to support whatever your opinion happens to be on the timing of bull castration. Do what is right for your herd.
