Version 1: November 2020 4 HISTORICAL STOTFOLD

Stotfold's History The name of Stotfold is thought to have been derived from the practice of northern cattle drovers breaking their journey at this point along the A1 Great North Road and penning their cattle (stots) in enclosures (folds) before continuing their journeys southwards.

The Archaeological team of the former Bedfordshire County Council have found trac- es of long forgotten settlements around the outskirts of today's town. These bear wit- ness to the fact that people settled with their families and animals on land in this area as long ago as the Stone Age, approx. 2700BC.

The , which runs through the town, was probably a great factor in the deci- sion to settle and in later years the Great North Road linking the south with the north ensured continuing inhabitation. The Doomsday Book of 1086 records STOTFALT as having a population of 200.

Version 1: November 2020 5 HISTORICAL STOTFOLD

Stotfold Today The Stotfold of today is a growing town situated in the south east of Bedfordshire, close to the border with . The town extends over an area of 2207 acres making this a large parish. The present population amounts to approximately 9,000 people, and this number is increasing as new, large developments are completed.

In 2009, Local Government in Bedfordshire underwent a Governance Review, and from April that year the new unitary authority Council came into being. This replaces the former Mid Beds District and Bedfordshire County Councils. Further details on responsibilities and contact information can be found on the Central Bedfordshire Council pages of this site.

Many of the buildings around the town bear witness to the Stotfold of Yesteryear: The oldest surviving building is St Mary's Parish Church which dates back to Norman times and still contains traces of its traditional architecture.

Randall's Mill, though now damaged by fire, dates back to the Industrial era of the 1800's. The Mill is now restored to its former working glory by a group of local residents who formed the Stotfold Mill Preservation Trust. The Mill is open on specific Open Days throughout the year. Please check their website for dates and times. www.stotfoldmill.com

Many of the old cottages around the town date back to a gentler time when you can imagine the annual Stotfold Feast being held on the Village Green. The Green is now in the ownership of the Town Council.

Stotfold Cemetery dates back to 1898 and the Town Council and residents are justly proud of the sympathetic way it has been landscaped and its tidy condition.

COMMUNITY EVENTS

Stotfold Big Tidy Up Held in April and September each year, residents are asked to join the Town Council to volunteer in a bid to rid the town of litter and to take pride in living in Stotfold.

The Mill Steam Weekend The Steam Fair and Country Show is, as ever, a popular event. Mill Weekends are held in May and October each year and continue to draw crowds from all over the country.

The funds generated are essential to keep Stotfold Mill and its adjacent Nature Reserve open for all to enjoy as a free entry visitor attraction.

Held at the Greenacre Centre, there are festive and craft stalls, refreshments available and an opportunity to meet Father Christmas! Local Choirs help to get everyone in the Christmas mood with some festive carols, and the lights are switched on from the front of the Greenacre Centre at 6.30pm.

Stotfold Festival week Held in June each year, Festival Week culminates with a Fete organised by the local schools in Stotfold. The Council makes the Memorial Hall available during Festival week for community groups and charities.

What to do in the event of an Emergency

During an emergency, you may not have time to make alternative plans. You may also not be aware of who to listen to for instructions. That's why it is important to know who to call and what to do under different circumstances.

Be Prepared

Information to help you prepare for an emergency can be found on the Bedfordshire Prepared website at https://www.bedfordshireprepared.org.uk

How to deal with an emergency situation

In the workplace, your first priority is human life, including your own. Everything else, including property comes secondary, after all possible danger to life has been dealt with.

Regardless of the type of emergency, the 10 actions listed below should be followed:

1. Raise the alarm.

2. Inform the public of the emergency.

3. Utilise on-site emergency response (i.e, use of fire extinguishers, etc.

4. Summon the emergency services (i.e., call 999 or 112)

5. Crowd management, including evacuation, where necessary

6. Evacuate people with disabilities.

7. Traffic management, including emergency vehicles

8. Incident control.

9. Liaise with emergency services.

10. Provide first aid and medical assistance.
