From the Pastor’s Desk…

Our Gospel today speaks about Marriage. As Catholics we see marriage as a Sacra- mental means to deepening friendship with God and with a spouse. The Bible teaches us that the relationship between husband and wife was uniquely created by God.

They are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate (Mk 10:9)

Marriage is the one relationship where man and woman promise to remain faithful to each other in good times and bad until death. But the fact of the matter is that the divorce rate is going up every year. Pope Francis attended the World Meeting of Families last week in Philadelphia where he reminded us that God does not stop lov- ing those who are separated or struggling in their married life. A broken marriage is one more sign of our wounded world.

The Holy Father has made the process of Annulment somewhat easier for divorced Catholics. Pope Francis clarified that an Annulment is not a divorce, but a declaration that a marriage might, in fact, not be a binding marriage. He explains that what seemed to be a sacrament wasn't a sacrament, for lack of freedom or for lack of maturity, because of mental illness or other reasons. We pray today for married cou- ples that they may deepen their love for each other. We pray for those who are di- vorced, that they may experience healing and comfort in God’s love. We pray for the unmarried that they may grow in their friendship with the Lord.

Bishop Nicholas Di Marzio visits our Parish Next Sunday, October 11, 2015, our Bishop Di Marzio will visit us and celebrate the 12:15 PM Mass. After the Eucharistic Celebration, Bishop Di Marzio will meet some of the parish leaders and ministers in Tolentine Hall. It is a great joy for us as a parish to welcome our Shepherd who comes to us to strengthen our faith and encourage us to continue to make St. Nick’s a vibrant parish.

Pray the Rosary October is the month of the Holy Rosary, a special month to honor Blessed Virgin Mary. I encourage all of you to pray the Rosary and receive many blessings from our Mother. The Rosary is a private as well as a communal devotion. Perhaps families might pray one decade of the rosary each night during October. Each day (Mon-Sat) the rosary is prayed in Mary’s (Blessed Sacrament) Chapel, after the 12:05 Mass. Parishioners are also encouraged to pray alone and with others at our beautiful Mary Garden outside St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Religious Education Center. Mary, Jesus’ mother and our mother, is always ready to intercede for us.

God bless you,

Fr. John Francis
