Revival Carp Cleanup

The Lachlan River has the highest Catch per Unit Effort (CPU) of Carp in the Murray Darling Basin, that is, the highest volume of carp biomass per hour of fishing effort. Priority area - The Lower Lachlan The Lower Lachlan River, including its tributaries and floodplain wetlands, is recognised as a priority High Ecological Value Aquatic Ecosystem (HEVAE) in . A key threat to this vulnerable area is invasive species such as the common Carp (Cyprinus Carpio). Species known to occur in the area include Murray Cod, listed as vulnerable under the EPBC Act 1999 and the Western Population of the Olive Perchlet which is listed as endangered under the NSW Fisheries Management Act 1994. Priority pest animal - Carp Carp are a priority pest animal issue for Murray Darling Basin waterways and have been identified as a key threat to the Lower Lachlan, with impacts including

high levels of turbidity, loss of aquatic vegetation,Gilgunnia and out-competing native fish for food and habitat. Office Locations

What is being done? • moderate to high levels of Large Woody Debris The Lachlan CMA is currently finalising a feasibility (LWD) to host macro invertebrates and provide study and business plan for ongoing commercial shelter from predators carp fishing in the Lachlan. This will include the • diversity in substrate management of carp separation cages and large • no sediment scale carp biomass reduction through commercial • low levels of erosion fishing operations. • macrophytes The Lachlan CMA also runs an annual Carp Cleanup, • bank stability in partnership with local community groups, across the catchment. The weekend is a lot of fun and increases How to manage riparian areas and improve the community’s awareness of this pest fish. native fish habitat What can you do? Best practice riparian rehabilitation activities include: • make sure that any carp you catch are removed • fencing, revegetation and alternative stock water from the river and disposed of humanely supply • visit the Lachlan CMA website to view the film on • protection of existing native vegetation and quality how to handle and prepare carp for eating or take habitat it home to fertilise the roses and feed the cat • revegetation of riparian areas • support industries like Charlie Carp that utilise the • targeted erosion control, and carp caught by commercial fishermen • improvements in grazing management • avoid tampering with the nets and equipment of Lachlan CMA staff are available to visit your farm and commercial fishing operations provide advice on how to improve the health of your • improve the habitat for native fish in our waterways waterways.
