However, this trend is not driven by a desire to “substitute Saint John’s Wort for Prozac,” but rather a yearning on the part of patients and many providers for a more patient-centered approach to care: an approach that values evidence, but respects patient’s preferences; an approach that fo- cuses on health and healing; and an approach that is inclusive and re- spectful of other healing traditions as well as individuals who practice those traditions. A term that has come to define that approach to care is integrative medicine. Although initially coined by Dr Andrew Weil as a way to describe this practice by physicians, those using this term should not fail to recognize the significant number of nursing and allied health professionals with interest and expertise in this area, and the importance of the role of CAM providers. As interest in integrative medicine has grown, so has the need for training and educational programs. At the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, through our Institute for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, we have recently developed an integrative health and wellness track within the master’s of health sciences program. In addition, we’ve incorporated significant content on integrative medicine into the medical and allied health schools curriculum and have part- viii nered with a massage school to offer a certificate training program for massage therapists in orthopedic massage. These are just a few examples of the types of educational opportunities that exist across the country and are offered by both conventional and CAM institutions. With the growth in the number and breadth of educational opportu- nities as well as interest in the CAM fields and integrative medicine, the need has developed for a reliable resource and education guide that can be used by health care providers, both conventional and CAM, as well as the general public. This book fulfills that need. My hope is that resources such as this will be used to facilitate the education of both conventional and CAM providers as well as the public, leading to an increase in the integrative approach to care and, ultimately, an improved health care system as well as improved health for all.
