Settling the Netflix & HBO Debate Settling the Netflix & HBO Debate 1 Settling the Netflix & HBO Debate A month ago, a report by Parrot Analytics compared the top TV series from several platforms during September, including Netflix and HBO, in three countries. We concluded that HBO’sGame of Thrones had the most demand out of these titles, with Netflix’s original titles coming in second. Recently, Ted Sarandos made comments indicating that he believed that Netflix’s digital original series, specificallyNarcos , actually was more popular than Game of Thrones. Expectedly, the comment sparked wide debates across fans and media alike. However, without a truly global cross-platform audience demand measure, it is impossible to make such comparisons. Luckily, Demand Rating™ enables the television to do exactly that. By measuring global audience demand activity on video streaming sites, file-sharing and P2P protocols, blogging and micro-blogging sites, fan and critic rating sites and social media, Parrot Analytics’ global demand measurement system is design to solve for the fragmentation of audiences across platforms with a single cross-platform, country-specific metric. To shed some more light, in this study we compare the demand for Game of Thrones to the demand for Netflix’s original series to determine which title comes out on top and in which markets. The Demand Expressions™ —an absolute measure of demand for titles within a market — were averaged over the month of December in 53 countries, classified by whetherGame of Thrones or a Netflix title had more demand. itle en et e hne 39 ei ne 12 nge i the itle en et 2 e l e hne 39 2 ei ne 12 nge i the 2 e l Settling the Netflix & HBO Debate e hne Netflix title Out of the 53 countries, 39 markets preferred Game of Thrones over Netflix’s original series, but 14 did prefer a Netflix title to HBO’s hit. Netflix’s top title, whether it came first or second, was usually Marvel’s Jessica Jones, which was only released on November 20th. Orange is the New Black was also popular: it had more demand than Game of Thrones in France and Spain. In South Africa, both Jessica Jones and Orange is the New Black had more demand than Game of Thrones. But where’s Narcos? While it came second behind Game of Thrones in our September study, it has decreased in demand since its August 28th release. Marvel’s Jessica Jones, released in mid- November, is now the most recent and most popular Netflix title. While a Netflix title only had more demand thanGame of Thrones in 26% of the markets included in this study, the markets where Netflix did come out on top are fairly important. From the map, it becomes clear that Netflix titles (specifically, Jessica Jones) have more demand than Game of Thrones in December in western Europe and Australia/New Zealand. Several other large countries, including South Africa and India, also have more demand for the Netflix show. On the other hand, Game of Thrones has the most demand in much of eastern Europe, South America and Asia. While Netflix is not yet available in most Asian and Middle Eastern countries, it is available in most of Europe and South America, indicating that for many markets their Game of Thrones preference is not a result of Netflix’s absence. 3 Settling the Netflix & HBO Debate With Parrot Analytics’ global Demand Rating™ system, the TV industry now has the tools to be able to compare audience demand for content on different platforms on a market-by-market basis. As far as the HBO vs Netflix debate goes, in December 2015, here are the facts: By demand, Game of Thrones is still more popular than Netflix’s latest series in the majority of markets around the globe. 4 Settling the Netflix & HBO Debate Appendix These tables contain the Demand RatingTM for the titles in each country. Demand RatingTM are a relative measure of demand across markets, so that we can tell that Game of Thrones has more demand in France (78.63) than it does in Brazil (71.72). Note the “rank” is only between Game of Thrones and Netflix original series in this market. The analyst examined those organized crime syndicates that direct their criminal activities at the United States, namely Mexican narcotics trafficking and human smuggling networks, as well as a range of smaller organizations that specialize in trans-border crime. The presence in Mexico of transnational criminal organizations, such as Russian and Asian organized crime, was also examined. In order to assess the extent of terrorist activity in Mexico, several of the country’s domestic guerrilla groups, as well as foreign terrorist organizations believed to have a presence in Mexico, are described. The report extensively cites from Spanish-language print media sources that contain coverage of criminal and terrorist organizations and their activities in Mexico.

The Empowering Squirrel Girl Jayme Horne Submitted for History of Art 390 Feminism and History of Art Professor Ellen Shortell Massachusetts College of Art and Design All the strength of a squirrel multiplied to the size of a girl? That must be the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl (fig. 1)! This paper will explore Marvel’s Squirrel Girl character, from her introduction as a joke character to her 2015 The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl comic series which is being harold as being extremely empowering. This paper aims to understand why a hero like Squirrel Girl would be harold and celebrated by fans, while other female heroes with feminist qualities like Captain Marvel or the New Almighty Thor might be receiving not as much praise. Squirrel Girl was created by Will Murray and artist Steve Ditko. Despite both of them having both worked for Marvel and DC, and having written stories about fan favorites like Spider-Man, Wonder Woman, Iron Man, and others, they are most known for creating Squirrel Girl, also known as Doreen Green. Her powers include superhuman strength, a furry, prehensile tail (roughly 3-4 feet long), squirrel-like buck teeth, squirrel-like retractable knuckle claws, as well as being able to communicate with squirrels and summon a squirrel army. She was first introduced in 1991, where she ambushed Iron Man in attempt to impress him and convince him to make her an Avenger. That’s when they were attacked one of Marvel’s most infamous and deadly villains, Doctor Doom. After Doctor Doom has defeated Iron Man, Squirrel Girl jumps in with her squirrel army and saves Iron Man1 (fig.

Abstract When Netflix launched in April 1998, Internet video was in its infancy. Eighteen years later, Netflix has developed into the first truly global Internet TV network. Many books have been written about the five broadcast networks – NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, and the CW – and many about the major cable networks – HBO, CNN, MTV, Nickelodeon, just to name a few – and this is the fitting time to undertake a detailed analysis of how Netflix, as the preeminent Internet TV networks, has come to be. This book, then, combines historical, industrial, and textual analysis to investigate, contextualize, and historicize Netflix's development as an Internet TV network. The book is split into four chapters. The first explores the ways in which Netflix's development during its early years a DVD-by-mail company – 1998-2007, a period I am calling "Netflix as Rental Company" – lay the foundations for the company's future iterations and successes. During this period, Netflix adapted DVD distribution to the Internet, revolutionizing the way viewers receive, watch, and choose content, and built a brand reputation on consumer-centric innovation.

  • Marvel's 'Luke Cage': the Art of Recording Sound in the Chaotic Marvel Universe
Marvel's 'Luke Cage': The Art of Recording Sound in the Chaotic Marvel Universe In Marvel's world of action and fighting, how do you capture sound? When Marvel announced it was expanding its universe to Netflix with a four-part series featuring Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist ending in an eight episode mini-series, The Defenders, there wasn’t much chatter among fanboys. Even when Netflix released the Daredevil teaser in 2015, fans were mum—but with good reason. ABC’s now- debunked Agent Carter was airing, Avengers: Age of Ultron saw daily plot reveals, and the latest trailer for Ant-Man dropped, delivering more intrigue to the macro-sized hero played by Paul Rudd. But overshadowing it all was news that Sony was bringing Spider- Man into the Marvel world, which we witnessed in Captain America: Civil War. What was then lost in the shuffle is now an unprecedented success for Netflix: Daredevil is one of its most-watched original series, Jessica Jones will see a second season, and the streaming service has announced a fifth hero in the fold, Punisher. Netflix is hoping Luke Cage, premiering today, packs the same powerful punch. No Film School reached out to production sound mixer Joshua Anderson, CAS, to discuss how he captured the chaotic sounds of Hell's Kitchen. "I imagine that when he takes a punch, he not only feels the physical power, but also feels the sound of the punch." No Film School: You’ve been the production mixer on each of the Marvel series on Netflix – Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and now Luke Cage.
