P R E P A R E D B Y T H E S I E R R A I N S T I T U T E F O R C O M M U N I T Y A N D E N V I R O N M E N T D E C E M B E R 2 0 2 0 L A K E A L M A N O R W A T E R S H E D M A N A G E M E N T P L A N L A K E A L M A N O R W A T E R S H E D G R O U P PREFACE: The Lake Almanor Watershed Group (LAWG), formerly known as the Almanor Basin Watershed Group (ABWAC), was created in 2005 by the Plumas County Board of Supervisors to address water quality, land use, and critical habitat issues in the Lake Almanor Basin and make policy recommendations to the Board of Supervisors. From 2005 to 2013, ABWAC served as an official advisory body to the Plumas County Board of Supervisors. The eleven volunteer ABWAC members worked closely with existing organizations and provided recommendations to the county on a range of topics from overnight boat use on Lake Almanor to cloud-seeding. ABWAC created a Watershed Management Plan that was approved by the Plumas County Board of Supervisors in 2009 and is intended to guide all efforts by the ABWAC to protect water quality, critical habitat, and quality of life in the Lake Almanor Basin. -

In 1942 this species was found in the Czech Republic for the first time and a total of 155 species records were obtained by the end of 2005. Based on distribution data, we observed the gradual expansion of this gastropod not only in the Elbe Lowland, where its occurrence is concentrated, but also in other regions of the Czech Republic particularly between 2001 and 2005. Information on habitat, altitude and co-occurrence with other molluscs are presented. Aquatic snails - Aquatic gastropods Abundance: Unknown Status: NSSU NatureServe: G5 SNR Population Status: Unknown Limiting Factor: Unknown Comment: None Introduction Aquatic snails and limpets or class Gastropoda are soft bodied molluscs with a spiral, coiled disk-shaped (snails), or cone-shaped shell (limpets). Aquatic snails and limpets are composed of a muscular foot, head, visceral mass (contains organs), and a mantle (secretes shell). Shell length or width varies between 0.2 and 7 cm (0.1 to 2.8 inches). About 526 species of aquatic snails and limpets are known across North America (Brown and Lydeard 2010). According to NatureServe (2009), 54% of the snails and limpets in North America are considered critically imperiled or imperiled (G1/T1 or G2/T2). Aquatic snails and limpets are typically scrapers, eating algae, microbes, fungi, and detritus off of solid substrate such as rocks, logs, or macrophytes (Smith 2001). Freshwater snails and limpets tend to lay eggs in spring. Most snails and limpets lay eggs on substrate, but the families Viviparidae and Thiaridae are live-bearers. The families Physidae, Lymnaeidae, Planorbidae, Ancylidae, Valvatidae, Acroloxidae, and Lancidae are hermaphroditic, but females and males are separate in all other families of freshwater gastropods. Most snails and limpets live 9 to 15 months; however, some species can have 2 to 3 generation in one year especially in warmer climates and others may live up to 4 years. In Wyoming, 50 species and subspecies of freshwater snails and limpets are known (Beetle 1989)(NatureServe 2009). Of these gastropods, 16% are considered critically imperiled or imperiled (G1/T1 or G2/T2). -

Pristine Lake Tahoe shrouded in smoke from threatening fire By Sam Metz and Brian Melley - Associated press In the Sacramento Bee, Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2021 Ash rained down on Lake Tahoe on Tuesday and thick yellow smoke blotted out views of the mountains rimming its pristine blue waters as a massive wildfire threatened the alpine vacation spot on the California-Nevada state line. Tourists ducked into cafes, outdoor gear shops and casinos on Lake Tahoe Boulevard for a respite from hazardous air coming from an erratic blaze less than 20 miles (32 kilometers) away. The Caldor Fire erupted over the course of a week into the nation’s No. 1 firefighting priority and was “knocking on the door” of Tahoe, said Thom Porter, California’s state fire chief. A major wildfire has not penetrated the Lake Tahoe Basin since 2007. Tourists typically come to swim and hike, relax along the lake’s calm shores or take their chances gambling, not risk their lives in the face of a potential disaster. Although there were no evacuations ordered and Porter said he didn't think the fire would reach the lake, it was impossible to ignore the blanket of haze so thick and vast that it closed schools for a second day in Reno, Nevada, which is about 60 miles (100 kilometers) from the fire. Visitors wore masks outdoors — not because the coronavirus pandemic, but because of the toxic air and inescapable stench of fire. The gondola that ferries summer passengers to the summit of the Heavenly Mountain ski area was closed until winter due to the wildfire risk. -

Snails hatched in May–June and kept in pairs usually started reproducing 42–114 days after hatch- ing, at the shell width of 3.0–5.2 mm and 3.75–5.1 whorls. Some of them continued reproduction next spring. Snails hatched in July-August and kept in pairs produced their first cocoons next year. In the year of hatching the snails produced their last cocoons till October, next year – usually till August. During their lifetime snails kept in pairs produced a maximum of 122 cocoons with a total of 511 eggs (per snail), and the number of eggs per cocoon ranged from 0 to 9. Snails kept in isolation produced a maximum of 10 cocoons (most without eggs, the remaining ones with eggs devoid of oocytes). The life span was 68–776 days (mean 423).
