DAY 2. Papatoetoe, starting the day at 9/2, were excusably cautious. A glance at the Fall of Wickets/overs bowled tells the story. And they stuck around for quite a long time before Josh Fisher struck twice in the 20th over and Dave Goddard, likewise, in the 39th – aided by the skills of Ben Horne behind the stumps. Dave’s two wickets were captured by Craig Speakman and his photos that follow show brilliantly the ‘offies’ arts. Then Sohal, and his partners at the crease, frustrated us for a further 36 overs till late in the afternoon and they were safe from handing us an outright win. Well done Papatoetoe – not exciting but a very successful escape from strife. Time for only a few overs, the game petered out BUT we did take the lion’s share of the points.

CRAIG’S PHOTOS – FIRST JOSH FISHER – Josh’s best figures for Parnell, 4/51:

A bit of fire and spite and a smile on the face of the umpire

AND THE SKIPPER’S ‘OFFIES’

39th over - to Compston - classically high action at the point of delivery and, then, ‘Keeper Ben is about to take the catch

Three balls later, to Hattingh - flighted above the eye line, and Ben takes another catch

Thanks Craig – great series of photos that capture the moments!

Men’s Premier Reserve Grade: Two Day Minor Championship Round 1. 12 & 19 Nov. Parnell vs. Kumeu at Orakei Domain 1,

KUMEU 132/10 Karun Phogat 4 wkts, Ganesh Ratnasabapathy 3 wkts, Henk Conradie 2 wkts & 30/0 PARNELL 200/5 dec. Matt Vercoe-Curtis 30, Henk Conradie 52, Ryan Turner 50 To be continued next Saturday, 19 Nov. Note that these scores are approximate – scorebook was not available, full details next week

SKIPPER TOM LANDRIGAN REPORTING ON DAY 1. Parnell won the toss and bowled first - Kumeu were all out for 132. We had the benefit of having Ganesh take part - his first day back after a break for university exams – and, with Karun continuing his great form, we had a formidable pace attack. In reply Henk and Matthew got away to a brisk start – the former hitting the ball with great power and Matt looked very sound. Ryan then continued the good work and enabled a declaration late in the day. Unfortunately we did not secure a wicket before stumps but we are very hopeful that an outright win will be secured next Saturday.

39th over - to Compston - classically high action at the point of delivery and, then, ‘Keeper Ben is about to take the catch

Senior B2 Grade: Limited (50) Overs Minor Championship 12 Nov.. Parnell Thirds vs. Kumeu at Huapai Domain 1.

PARNELL 240 Lalit Bose 74, Tom Urry 98* KUMEU 40/0 To be continued next week

6/26 & All That! Yes, 6/26 was the dismal score at one point. On grass for the first time this season, our top order failed to adapt. And one of them couldn’t even blame the pitch as he clubbed a full toss to the one Kumeu player who seemed competent in the field! Then, from that dreadful start, a recovery thanks to Lalit, the new arrival from UK, and Skipper Tom. A marvellous stand that brought respectability back to the total. That is until Lalit, over eager to attack an offie, holed out on the boundary to that one outstanding fielder! This left Tom, more than deserving of a ton, with no. 11 Pete Hickman who assisted for a full 7 overs. But this was still not long enough for Tom to reach his century and Pete was eventually bowled with Tom just 2 short on 98*. An unsubstantiated rumour has it that Tom was valuing a not out to boost his average but that is a matter for the Thirds’ fines committee.

Men’s One Day Grades – Results

1B Grade: 12 Nov. Parnell Kings vs. Punjabi Raiders at Shore Road 2a. PARNELL 398/8 (40) Chak 113, Praveen 101, Roopesh 74 PUNJABI RAIDERS 399/2 (35.4) Aaron & Sownder 1 wicket each RESULT: PARNELL LOST BY 8 WICKETS

CAPTAIN ROOPESH REPORTING: Not an ideal weather for cricket with gusty wind and drizzling through out the day. Kings won the toss and decided to bat first. Aaron opened the innings with Chak. He hit a big six in the second over. That's what we get to see when Aaron is around. But that didn't last long. Aaron played across and had his stumps rattled. Roy joined Chak and got a beauty even before he got his eyes in the game. Pitched in line and swung out to take the off stump away. Kings were two down in no time. Roopesh came into the middle with just 30 runs on the board. Chak and Roopesh kept the scoreboard ticking with quick singles and putting away the bad balls. Soon they both looked in control and there were hardly any dot balls. As soon as Chak completed his half century, he cut loose and smashed couple of sixes over mid-wicket. On the other end, Roopesh was accumulating his runs with one's, two's and an odd boundary. Half way through the first innings, run rate was over 7.5 with just two wickets down. With plenty of batting to come, Kings were eyeing over 300. A firm drive to long-on bought up Roopesh's first 50 of the season. Chak started smashing all over the park and reached the magical 3 figures with a massive six over long-on. His superb innings came to an end when he was held at long on. Chak walked off the ground to a standing ovation from his teammates. Abrar walked in to join the captain in the middle. Roopesh clubbed the left arm spinner for a six just before he edged one to the keeper. Opponents did well to have two new batsmen at the crease. Abrar made a quick 27 and got out. Praveen and Arul kept the fielders on their toes with quick singles. Arul got out to a well made 23. Score was over 300 with 8 overs to go and Vignesh walks in. Praveen decided to bring on his Late cuts, Paddle scoops and Dil-scoops. Praveen scored effortlessly behind the wicket on both sides and made it literally impossible for the opponents' captain to set the field. With flurry of boundaries and few over the line, Praveen reached his century in quick time. Praveen got out trying to paddle scoop and dragging one onto the stumps. Sundar was run out of the last ball of the innings. Kings set a humongous target of 399 for the opponents. Aaron started the proceedings for Kings with a wicket of his first over. Arul on the other end was bowling at a good pace and had the batsmen trapped in front of wickets - but was turned down by the umpire. Aaron and Arul had the batsmen's in trouble few times and were convinced twice for the leg before shout, only to be turned down by umpire again. Batsmen tried to pull a waist height half tracker from Arul and got a top edge to be caught by Arul himself. This time umpire calls it a no ball claiming it to be over the shoulders, which clearly wasn't. Any talks to the umpire or opponent captain wasn't useful. Arul came back strong in his next over and had the batsmen caught behind by Praveen. But the umpire couldn't see the deviation or hear anything. It was just 6 overs into the second innings but had lots of drama already. Sundar and Sownder bowled in the right areas and made the batsmen earn each and every run. Sownder had two definite leg before shouts that wasn't given either. Sownder had one come in sharply to knock the stumps off. Opponents lost their second wicket, on papers. With leg before wicket and sharp caught behinds ruled out of the game, it was easy for the batsmen to play their shots. Umpire's decision and lousy effort on the field by Kings helped the opponents achieve the target.

TAKAPUNA 228/6 (35) Rob ter Braak 65, Mark Smith 3/63 (6) PARNELL 163/6 (35) Phil Lindberg 47, Neil McCullough 31* RESULT: PARNELL LOST BY 65 RUNS IN THE ABSENCE OF SKIPPER OLLIE: Takapuna put together a solid 228 which was marked by the notable bowling of Mark Smith who bought his three wickets generously. Special mention has to be made of the stunning screamer taken by ‘keeper John Nicol deputising for Simon Payton behind the stumps. Also, the opposition’s star bat, Rob ter Braak, was dismissed for only 65 – his two previous innings this season have been 100* and 101* and he now has an average of only 266.00. Our efforts to chase this down started slowly but Phil’s innings livened things up and he was well backed by Neil’s knock. Of particular note, the Skipper, having set the standard for impartial umpiring by firing several of our own batsmen on previous outings, withstood several vociferous LBW appeals before offering, at 7, a catch which a Takapuna fielder accepted gratefully. With dismissals such as this, the run chase faltered and Takapuna scraped in by only 65 runs.

Calling All AUT Players – Needed For NZ University T20s

From: Zak Middleton [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, November 14, 2016 10:26 AM Subject: Looking for AUT Students in your Premier Team Importance: High

To whom it may concern We are seeking to find the best cricketers at AUT as we look to enter the inaugural NZ University T20 Cricket Tournament early next year. After reading thru the powerpoint and invitation letter, we see this event as a high quality tournament in terms of its organisation, and expected standard of play. It has been endorsed by NZC and Cricket Wellington as well! It is definitely something we want to be a part of, as it aligns with the new direction and structure of Tertiary Sport in NZ, which is focused on high performance. There is even potential for NZ Universities representation in the future. For us to enter a team we are required to have a minimum of eight Premier Club players in the team.

If there are any 2016 AUT Students in your Premier (or reserve) club teams could you please either pass this on to them, or forward us their email address so we can get in touch with them about this event.

After speaking to Auckland Cricket, this clashes with the u19 and ‘A’ programmes, so these players unfortunately won’t be available for selection/ As the event is run during the working week, it should be of little disruptance to your Premier Club program. If you have any questions then feel free to contact me via email, or on my mobile 021 1260155. Kind regards Zak Middleton Sport Activity Coordinator Student Services Auckland University of Technology

MERV WALLACE DAY – Sat. 17 December

Luncheon to Celebrate “Merv Wallace Day” To be held in the Mike Simpson Lounge, 32 Shore Road, Remuera, Saturday, 17 December 2016 – gather from 11.00am for Noon.

Merv, if he had not died 9 years ago, would be celebrating his 100th birthday on 19 December 2016. Merv joined Parnell CC as a 15 year old in the 1932-33 season. Almost immediately he became a mainstay of our batting, quickly attained selection for Auckland and then NZ. For NZ he toured England in 1937, when he topped the batting averages (1641 at 41.02), and again in 1949 when he scored 970 in May and, overall, 1722 at 49.20. Merv captained NZ vs. South Africa in ‘53/54. In March 1956 he was Coach to the NZ team that won it’s first Test after 26 unsuccessful years. All that is nothing compared to his contribution to the Parnell CC – for 60+ years as player, captain and then Patron – Merv was superb. A brilliant coach and mentor to the young, we treasure our memories of Merv and take this opportunity to celebrate his “Ton” with Vonnie, Adele and Greg and other members of the Wallace family.
