  • History of the Commonwealth Games
GAMES HISTORY INTRODUCTION In past centuries, the British Empire’s power and influence stretched all over the world. It started at the time of Elizabeth 1 when Sir Francis Drake and other explorers started to challenge the Portuguese and Spanish domination of the world. The modern Commonwealth was formed in 1949, with ‘British’ dropped from the name and with Logo of the Commonwealth many countries becoming independent, but Games Federation choosing to remain part of the group of nations called the Commonwealth. The first recorded Games between British Empire athletes were part of the celebrations for the Coronation of His Majesty King George V in 1911. The Games were called the 'Festival of Empire' and included Athletics, Boxing, Wrestling and Swimming events. At the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam, the friendliness between the Empire athletes revived the idea of the Festival of Empire. Canadian, Bobby Robinson, called a meeting of British Empire sports representatives, who agreed to his proposal to hold the first Games in 1930 in Hamilton, Canada. From 1930 to 1950 the Games were called the British Empire Games, and until 1962 were called the British Empire and Commonwealth Games. From 1966 to 1974 they became the British Commonwealth Games and from 1978 onwards they have been known as the Commonwealth Games. • Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games: Implications for the Local Property Market
The Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games: implications for the local property market Richard Reed* and Hao Wu (*contact author) Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning University of Melbourne Melbourne 3010 Victoria Australia Tel: +61 3 8344 8966 Fax: +61 3 8344 5532 Email: [email protected] Abstract for the 11th Annual Pacific Rim Real Estate Conference 23 - 27 January 2005 - Melbourne, Australia Keywords: Commonwealth games, major sporting event, infrastructure, property market, host city. Abstract: In 2006 Melbourne will host the 18th Commonwealth Games with Brisbane being the last Australian city to host this event over two decades ago in 1982. Melbourne has not held a major global sporting event since the 1956 Olympic Games, although the 2006 Commonwealth Games follows on from the successful 2000 Sydney Olympics. These sporting events have continued to grow from strength to strength, and have been assisted by Australia's close affiliation with sport and the widespread global media coverage. In a similar manner to other sporting events that Melbourne hosts, including the Australian Tennis Open, Formula One Grand Prix, Motorcycle Grand Prix, Melbourne Cup and Australian Football League, the city and its inhabitants are consumed by these events. The 2006 Commonwealth Games is certain to follow this trend. The task of hosting the Commonwealth Games is enormous, although actively pursued in a fierce bidding process by competing cities. The benefits are undisputed and include an influx of visitors to the host city, an opportunity to enhance or rebuild infrastructure such as transport, plus the worldwide focus on the host city before and during the event.

  • Snips and Snipes 8 February 2018 the Threat That the IOC May Drop Boxing from the 2020 Olympic Games Should Come As No Surprise
Snips and Snipes 8 February 2018 The threat that the IOC may drop boxing from the 2020 Olympic Games should come as no surprise. For a few years now the AIBA which has responsibility for administrating International “amateur” boxing-but let’s not kid ourselves the Olympics Games are no longer for amateurs-have too long been focusing on making money rather than developing the sport. For a few years they have through the WSB and other initiatives helped make the transition from AIBA to professional boxing easier for elite boxers. However they have failed to tackle the quality of judging and refereeing and have failed to put in place and to police internal controls leaving themselves open to allegations of mismanagement and profligacy taking the organisation to the edge of bankruptcy. The criticism over their handling of boxing at the Rio Olympics had already put them under the IOC spotlight and then they went and shot themselves in the foot over the appointment of an interim President . They selected a man who has been sanctioned by the United States Treasury Department for alleged links to a major “transnational criminal organisation”. I can almost imagine the conversation “We need an interim President let’s appoint Gafur Rakhimov” with one voice saying “ isn’t he sanctioned by the United States Treasury Department for alleged link to a major “transnational criminal organisation”. “Yes sounds just the man for the job”! A ban from the Olympics would be a huge blow for boxing’s prestige but it is more difficult to decide whether it would have any repercussions for professional boxing.

Following on from their club members attending a Volunteer Development Day the club has benefitted from various initiatives both on and off the pitch. The intended outcomes from their involvement in a cross- community volunteer development programme were: • To increase knowledge around recruitment, retention and reward of club volunteers • To create close links with other local sports clubs from Gaelic and Football backgrounds • To get the opportunity to learn how other sports manage volunteers • To avail of any future opportunities for club members and volunteers to be involved with the programme The steps Ballynahinch have taken for this to be a success and the positive impacts are highlighted across the next few slides. Club Model: Case Study of Good Practice What was delivered? In Year 1 (2018) of the Programme Ballynahinch attended the Volunteer Development Day in Banbridge and in Year 3 (2020) they attended an Online Volunteer Development Presentation with clubs from GAA and Football. They had planned to send a number of volunteers and committee members to a Volunteer Development event which had to be cancelled due to the pandemic. As a result of their attendance at our VDP events Ballynahinch have also been involved in other aspects of the programme. Their young members have been involved in our Game of 3 Halves events, valued volunteer club members have been on Stadium tours of Kingspan Stadium, The National Football Stadium at Windsor Park and Croke Park, young volunteers have been accredited through our GoldMark scheme and the club were awarded a sports equipment pack due to their prolonged, sustained involvement within the Sports Uniting Communities Prog ramme.

For more information on our Corruption in Sport Initiative, visit: www.transparency.org/sportintegrity 3.8 Malpractice in the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games and the renovation of Shivaji Stadium Ashutosh Kumar Mishra1 The 2010 Commonwealth Games, held in New Delhi, were marred by allegations of corruption and mismanagement, which tarnished the image of India by presenting it as a country blighted by high levels of fraud and malpractice.2 From the very beginning the event was shrouded in controversies, which continually surfaced and have still not been fully resolved. Concerns were raised during the preparatory phase, with construction work falling behind schedule and volunteers quitting in large numbers because of dissatisfaction with their assignments and with the training programme. Gross violations of workers’ rights were reported at construction sites, where workers were forced into begar.3 The conclusion of the Games brought to the fore further issues, such as the reported flouting of contracting rules by officials of the Organising Committee and the awarding of work contracts to incompetent agencies at hugely inflated prices.4 At the start it was not clear whether the Organising Committee would be covered under the national Right to Information (RTI) Act, as it did not come under the purview of the definition of ‘state’.5 Such grey areas can create a sense of immunity from rules, procedures and accountability. Concerns about the management
