Church News April 2019

Spring Harvest and Sow Good!

Butlins would not naturally be my holiday choice but every year the Gobles head to Minehead, as I have done for most of thirty years! Spring Harvest is a teaching and worship event for all generations, a cross between a holiday/festival/conference, inviting an encounter with God. It takes over Butlins and energises my growing family in our faith, keeps us up-to-date with emerging resources and ways of worshipping as part of a global Church. It’s a very uplifting experience worshipping as a young person with 300 others your age or as an adult with a couple of thousand. Fancy giving it a try? Take a look at their website and I’d be happy to book you in with us in June 2019 for Spring Harvest 2020.

A young person at GIFT, our Benefice youth group, recently sowed an idea in my mind… we should have a choir, she said! The seed of an idea germinated. What a great way of bringing people of all ages together! A choir of sorts for all sorts where we could also explore emerging styles of music for worship! So, even if your singing has only ever been confined to the privacy of your car or shower, a quick boogie to iTunes or a hum to the grandchildren, let’s get together, make some noise, have some fun and grow seeds of worship in SOW GOOD!

SOW stands for Songs of Worship. In many growing churches there are guitars, drums and others instrumentalists, but until we form our own band (!) backing tracks can help us to try out that sort of thing – but let’s not confine it to one style. In some of our services we already include simple Celtic and folk singing, easily learnt and quickly forming harmony, inspired by new expressions of monastic community like the Northumbria community and Iona’s Wild Goose Worship. Taize chants again invite harmony, can be textured with cantors and instruments and invite improvisation! We have many hymns we could revive as well as learn a few we don’t all know!

SOW Good!... because singing makes you feel good and worship is what we are made for so we flourish when we do it! If robes and anthems are more your thing, then do consider joining the warmly welcoming Pillertons choir. SOW Good! will also meet on Thursdays, but monthly between 7 and 8.15pm in Ettington church beginning on 2nd May, 6th June and 4th July. Just turn up and join in! (under 18s must be registered or accompanied by an adult!)

God bless, Sharon.

The meeting held on 13th March was sparsely attended: 5 Councillors, the Clerk, 2 Community Centre representatives and 2 members of the public. Apologies were received from the District and County Councillors.

The Community Centre (CC) update included the alarming news that owing to pressures of personal work both the Chair and Secretary of the Management Committee had felt it necessary to stand down. It was resolved that Cllr Hughes, as Parish Council Trustee representative, would attend a meeting of the remaining committee officers to discuss a way forward. The CC also enquired whether the Parish Council would be willing to contribute the funds set aside for development of the upper floor in its earmarked reserves towards the installation of a staircase compliant with building regulations in order to better facilitate its storage capabilities. It was resolved that the CC should make a case and provide a long term plan for the future of the upper floor in order to justify such expenditure and Councillors would give the matter consideration at the June meeting. Similarly, in response to a request that the Parish Council should fund the cost of storing the recently purchased ‘Rubbish Friends’ equipment Councillors requested details of what charges might apply.

There were no issues raised in the Open Forum but the Clerk will alert the relevant authority regarding the Kents Lane to Old Road public footpath signpost which has broken at ground level and had been reported. Two planning matters appeared on the agenda: Councillors had not called for an extraordinary meeting to debate a change of use to home boarding dogs at 3 Hockley Lane prior to the comments deadline; and it was resolved at the meeting to send a letter of support for the proposed access and driveway plans at 3 Road.

The remainder of the meeting revolved around general administrative matters and further discussions on how the tennis court/multi use games area (MUGA) can be improved/better utilised/managed.

IT’S ELECTION YEAR FOR THE PARISH COUNCIL. ALL THE EXISTING COUNCILLORS HAVE TO STAND DOWN IN APRIL AND APPLY FOR RE-ELECTION IF THEY WISH TO CONTINUE. FOR THE PAST 4 YEARS WE HAVE SOLDIERED ON WITH 6 COUNCILLORS WHEN WE SHOULD HAVE 9. PLEASE HEED THE LEAFLET YOU HAVE RECEIVED AND IF YOU CAN BRING YOURSELF TO MAKE THIS MODEST COMMITMENT BUT HUGE CONTRIBUTION TO YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY ASK FOR A NOMINATION PACK AS DETAILED ON THE FRONT PAGE. THE DEADLINE FOR NOMINATIONS IS 4PM ON 3rd APRIL AT STRATFORD DISTRICT COUNCIL.

The next Parish Council meeting takes place at 7.30pm on 10th April in the Community Centre Lounge COMMUNITY CENTRE NEWS

There are three main community events at the Community Centre this month.

Firstly, the Easter Bingo on Friday 5th April. This will be the usual bingo fun but will be egg-stra egg-citing as it will be the debut of our fabulous new village bingo caller Simon Beaty. Please come along and give Simon your support as he hatches his bingo calling skills for the first time. He’s a quiet, retiring soul but with your encouragement he might just come out of his shell (enough Easter puns yet?). There will be the usual mix of bingo/raffle prizes and a prize for the best Easter headgear – eggheads may get bonus points!

Secondly the Village Spring Clean is on 13th April. There are just a few tables remaining at the Community Centre and of course you can also sell from your drive and be included on the event map. Please note the deadline for reserving tables or inclusion on the map is Friday 5th April to allow time for design and printing. Cost either way is £10 per table which will contribute towards the upkeep of your Community Centre. The event will also financially benefit the Church and School and of course you can all benefit by selling the stuff you no longer want or need! There will be delicious refreshments for sale at the Community Centre and we anticipate a great village event.

There will also be a general community event at the Centre on 23rd March organised for the village by the Parish Council – this will showcase many of the groups in the village and the Community Centre team will be represented. We will be displaying details of upcoming events, giving details of how the Centre spends its income and of the projects to improve your Community Centre, for which we plan to raise funds over the coming months and years. Remember the Community Centre is funded by your support of events and any grants we are successful in applying for. We are shortly going to be displaying a “Blue Peter style” fundraising thermometer in the reception area so everyone can see how we are progressing towards various improvements to the Centre with your help. For example…we are pleased to announce that we were recently successful in applying for a financial grant to replace the water heater in the gents loos! We’re not exactly “flush” with funds so we hope the men of Ettington will appreciate this small improvement when they answer the call of nature!

Finally, just to remind everyone that the monthly Community Centre committee meetings now have an “open forum” section for regular hirers to come and get involved in your community centre, share ideas, ask questions and get support from the committee in making this great facility work for you and your groups. The football club were represented at the March meeting. It’s important to us that info flows both ways – we really want the community to be invested in the running of the Community Centre. The next committee meeting will be on Tuesday 2nd April at 7.30pm in the Community Centre lounge. You are welcome to come along and see what it’s all about and join in our discussions. You can also contact us on [email protected].

VILLAGE NEWS

Gardening Club A colourful, sun kissed and tantalising tour of the tropical Pacific islands of Fiji and Samoa was just what we all needed on a wet and windy March evening when members welcomed back Roger Umpelby for his talk titled A plant lover’s view of Fiji & Samoa. It was about 10 years ago that Roger and his wife had a stopover in the islands whilst on their way to New Zealand. After an introduction to the history, colonisation and geography of the islands we were on a photo tour of the island to meet the chief and villagers in a Polynesian meeting house where custom required a shared cup of Kava; the traditional, narcotic and relaxing tipple. A visit to the local school saw attentive, well dressed children at study, which has to be paid for, and to which the children walk up to a mile or so each way. They also do all the school cleaning. The national flower of Fiji is the Tagimaucia, a vine with red and white flowers which only grows in the very difficult to reach central mountainous area of the main island, Taveuni - a stock photo of the flower had to suffice. Two other plants seen were the African Tulip tree, beautiful but too pervasive and the Frangipani also very colourful and beautiful which can be worn in the hair by ladies (sometime also men) to indicate their availability. Cyclone Winston wreaked much devastation in 2016. An overnight flight of a few hundred miles took them to Western Samoa, another group of islands with a colonial history. The island of Upolu was the last home of Robert Louis Stevenson in the 1890s and the old family house is now a museum to Tusitala, the Teller of Tales, as the islanders called him. Another colourful photo tour showed island life; in particular the growing, transport and processing of sugar cane, one of the main industries. The islands are also the source of many of our own imports; cocoa, coffee, pineapple, papaya, cassava and coconuts, which can be rather deadly when they drop on the heads of passers-by. Hundreds of beautiful orchids were to be seen but naming them was not so easy, even for some of the UK orchid societies. These islands also suffered badly in the 2009 tsunami. As the scenes came to an end and the lights raised it was time for questions, refreshments and a raffle.

The club's next meeting will be on Thursday 4th April when we welcome Deborah Wright of Warwickshire Wildlife Trust for her talk titled Hedgehogs in your garden. New members and visitors are always welcome. For more information on any of the club’s events please call Matthew on 07748 137395.

Summer outings: On Wednesday 26th June the club’s summer outing will be to Castle Ashby & Coton Manor; two lovely gardens. We will leave the Community Centre at 9am and arrive back around 6.30pm. The cost of transport will be £14pp and group entry to both gardens will also be £14pp. On Thursday 4th July we have an afternoon visit to the local Admington Hall gardens. The garden is an NGS garden open for group visits and the visit is arranged for 2pm-5.30pm. The cost is £7.50pp with refreshments of tea/cake available at £4pp and served at 3.30pm. Afterwards we can continue to enjoy the garden or leave, as you wish. For more information on these trips please call Matthew on 07748 137395. Monday Club Our next meeting is at the very beginning of the month, on April 1st, in the small hall of the community centre starting at 7.30pm. John Parnell will show a video and give a talk and demonstration on ‘The History of Hula Hooping’. You may have seen him and heard his catchy tune in the semi-finals of ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ in 2017. John visits schools and other groups with his hoops to help increase exercise and fitness, he also provides entertainment at children’s parties and hen nights. He can do stilt walking, close-up magic and balloon modelling and is a versatile and entertaining speaker. We will be invited to have a go at hula hooping at the end of his talk. Visitors are very welcome at £3 including refreshments. Further details from Pat on 740442. In April we will also be having a cheese and wine lunch at a member’s house, a group of members will be going to see ‘Cats’ in Leamington and we will be having a fish and chip lunch on St George’s day, so potentially a busy month with plenty of opportunities for socialising. New members are always welcome, more details from Pat on 740664 or Jackie on 740192.

Village Breakfast There was a great turnout of locals and visitors to the village at the recent breakfast in the Community Centre and £265 was raised for Pre-School. The next breakfast will be on Saturday 22nd June, when funds will be raised for the village church, so pop the date in your diaries now. The final chance for a village breakfast this year will be on Saturday 12th October, when funds raised will go to the village school. It’s a great opportunity to catch up with friends and neighbours whilst raising money for a good cause at the same time. A big thank you must go to all the helpers, without whom it wouldn’t be possible.

Where have all the insects gone? There have been recent reports in the national news about the adverse effects of human activity on the natural environment and the implications this has for survival of the human race in the long term (eg https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science- environment-47198576). Whilst we’re well aware of human impacts on mammals, birds and plants, the very large reduction in insect numbers is less well known. We notice the colourful insects such as butterflies and ‘useful’ insects like bees but there are a whole host of other species that fulfil important roles by being food for other species (such as birds), pollinating plants, cleaning up the environment (think of dung beetles) and generally contributing to ‘ecosystem health’. Although some insects are ‘pests’ they’re a relatively small proportion of the insect world. Could the Parish of Ettington make more of a ‘difference’ and support insects and, through this, other wildlife in a more proactive way? Parishioners already provide resources for some types of insect in their gardens and there are also certain areas around the parish that act as ‘insect reserves’ that should be protected, for example, the cutting alongside the bypass and verges down the Halford Road and Old Warwick Road. The bank by the church, which produces a fine display of daffodils in spring, also has wild flowers, including some lovely orchids. These will flower after the daffodils, provided the grass isn’t mown too soon. Probably the most important thing that we can all do for insects is to provide them with more diverse habitats, not to be so ‘tidy’ in the way that we manage our gardens, verges and other areas, and to try to ‘connect up’ existing wild spaces as much as possible so that insect populations are better linked to the resources that they need. From the insects’ point of view, untidy is good! There are very good sources of information on the type of things we might do from the charity Buglife https://www.buglife.org.uk/ and from the Warwickshire, Coventry & Solihull Local Biodiversity Action Plan, which has a specific plan for parishes: http://www.warwickshirewildlifetrust.org.uk/sites/default/files/files/PARISH%20 BIODIVERSITY%20ACTION%20PLAN%202014.pdf. Furthermore, could parish councils have a planning policy standard to send to the planners when they are asked to comment, which would prevent developers from removing established hedgerow and mowing verges to sterile carpet? Is it possible to ask, for example, the Spitfire developers to reinstate the diverse hedgerow they removed and allow some of the grass to grow freely? Finally, there have been some preliminary discussions about a possible meeting for those interested in doing more for insects and other wildlife in the Parish of Tysoe. This could certainly be expanded to include other interested parishes. Dr Rosemary Collier – Tysoe Mr Peter Hawksworth - Ettington
