  • RICHARD STATE Final Edit
THE LONESOME VOYAGER Songs and stories from the Best Years of Our Lives STATE THEATRE – SYDNEY - SATURDAY AUGUST 15 Bookings: www.ticketmaster.com.au PHONE 136 100 Tickets on Sale at 10.00am Thursday April 30 On August 15th 2015, Richard Clapton makes a welcome return to Sydney’s State Theatre to continue the tradition of his annual concert in this special venue. This unique show will be performed in two parts. The first part of the show will be Richard and the masterful Danny Spencer on guitar, performing an acoustic repertoire and insights into Richard’s life and songwriting. Danny and Richard have been musical partners for well over a decade and Danny has become a well established part of Richard’s musical DNA. After interval, Richard returns to the stage with his full band and an exciting creative sound and lighting production. After more than 40 years of treading the boards on the Australian rock scene, this year Richard will bring together a very different style of show for the State Theatre. With the fantastic response to Richard’s recent memoirs, “The Best Years of Our Lives” in 2015, it occurred to him that audiences might just would appreciate a hybrid show featuring not just the music, but all the often crazy and often emotional stories behind the music. The book covers the halcyon years from the late Sixties in London to the Seventies and Eighties on the Oz rock scene. The musical journey onstage will cover those days of “The Golden Age” the likes of which we will never see again, accompanied by storytelling from one of the true survivors of those times.

  • A New Perspective on the Presley Legend
JULY, 1986 Vol 10 No 6 ISSN 0314 - 0598 A publication of the Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust A New Perspective on the Presley Legend ARE YOU LONESOME TONIGHT? by Alan Bleasdale Directed by Robin Lefevre Designed by Voytek Lighting designed by John Swaine Musical direction by Frank Esler-Smith Cast: Martin Shaw, David Franklin, Peta Toppano, Marcia Hines, John Derum, Lynda Stoner, Mervyn Drake, Ron Hackett and Jennifer West Her Majesty's Theatre heap of foil-wrapped Cadillac bon A nets (or is it crushed Cadillacs) form a stage upon a stage to set the mood for ARE YOU LONESOME TONIGHT?, Alan Bleasdale's play with songs about the life and death of Elvis Presley. On the lower stage, Gracelands, the garish pink Presley mansion with its outrageous chandeliers, is portrayed. Here, on the last day of his life, is "The King", now ageing, bloated, pill-popping and wear ing a purple jumpsuit and sunglasses. He watches his old movies and fumes because one of his trusted "aides" is ex posing his secrets to a newspaperman. In a series of flashbacks, Elvis relives his earlier experiences, the death of the twin brother whom he believes was his alter ego and stronger half, the death of his mother while he was a GI in Ger many, and the adulation poured on him as the lean, sexy king of rock. HiS manager, Colonel Tom Parker, is por trayed as his manipulator, holding a Presley dummy and gloating over the Martin Shaw as the ageing Presley in ARE profits. LONESOME TONIGHT? and (inset) as himself Author Bleasdale wrote the play to achieve a personal vindication of Presley, London critics were not always kind of $9.00 per ticket).

Jeff Apter @320kbps.mp3 [00:00:00] Welcome to the Inner West Library Speaker series. Before we begin, I would like to acknowledge the Gadigal and Wangal people of the Eora nation and pay my respects to the elders past, present and emerging. Today's conversation will be with Jeff Apter, Jeff is the author of more than 20 music biographies, many of them bestsellers. His subjects include Johnny O'Keefe, Keith Urban, Johnny Farnham, the Bee Gees and AC/DC. Jeff worked with Rolling Stone for many years and has written about music legends Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan and Patti Smith. In 2015, he worked on the Helpmann Award nominated live show A State of Grace, The music of Jeff and Tim Buckley. Today, we speak about his new book, Friday On My Mind, The Life of George Young. This podcast is relevant to the music library, which will open at Ashfield Library in November this year. So, Jeff, can you talk a little about George Young and his early relationship with Harry Vanda while staying at the Villawood migrant hostel? [00:01:04] George Young and his family. He was one of 10, came to Australia in nineteen sixty three. They were part of what we now know, known as the ten pound POM scheme. And they've been hoping they've been invited basically over to the sunny side of Australia. And they ended up in the Villawood Migrant Hostel, which was not the most hospitable place then or now. But George one day was walking around the hostel and he heard a sound coming from the laundry room.

  • Stewart Speer: a Drummer Who Won't Let the Odds Beat
STEWART SPEER: A DRUMMER WHO WON’T LET THE ODDS BEAT HIM by Eric Myers ___________________________________________________ [This article appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald on September 15, 1981.] his week the legendary 53-year-old drummer Stewart Speer embarks on a 10- week tour of Australia with Max Merritt, the former Australian rock star now T based in England. This period of employment breaks a long drought for an important figure in Australian jazz history. Apart front a similar tour with Merritt last year, Speer has worked only occasionally since returning two years ago from England, where he spent most of the 1970s. Max Merritt & the Meteors, L-R, Speer, Lance Dixon, Merritt, Martin (Fuzz) Deniz, John Gourd… 1 Speer, with cigarette dangling… “I would like to be playing more, but I’m not sure about how to go about it,” said Speer recently. “I wouldn’t mind a regular gig, maybe with some electric players. I like a bit of noise.” “Of course I have been sick since I came back from England,” he says, ticking off an impressive series of afflictions — leg ulcers, cellulitis, gout and arthritis are just some of them. Physically, he is an awesome man — some 22 stone, although he is down from last year’s 25 stone — with a flowing white beard and long grey hair which seems to grow out of the sides of his ever-present peak cap. In performance, he establishes a formidable presence behind the array of cymbals and tom-toms which make up the modern drum-kit. Always there is a huge cloud of smoke pouring upwards from the cigarette which dangles nonchalantly from his lips.

[Warning - This film contains nudity and references to drugs] [What A Life! Rock Photography by Tony Mott - a free exhibition until 7 February 2016. Solid Gold - Jeff Apter & Philip Morris, Metcalfe Theatre, State Library of NSW, 5th December 2015] [Dressed in a black shirt and dark jeans, grey-haired Philip Morris sits beside his interviewer Jess Apter, a bald man dressed casually] [JEFF APTER] Thank you. Before starting, I want to say I was really fortunate to be able to work with Philip on this book. [Jeff Apter holds up a coffee table book] [JEFF APTER] And it was one of the more interesting exercises, wasn't it? Because we were given a directive to come up with... Was it 200 photos? ..for this book. [PHILIP MORRIS] That's right. [JEFF APTER] And Philip's archive is so fantastic and so rich, that I think we got it down to, what, 600? [PHILIP MORRIS] Yeah. [Audience laughs] [JEFF APTER] Was it 600 to start with? It was something like that. And it's staggering, really. It's a really great document of Australian rock history at a really interesting turning point. So to get it down to this... It's begging for a second edition, by the way. There's so many great photos. So it was a real honour to be able to... to do that. It was a lot of fun. [PHILIP MORRIS] Yeah, it was. [JEFF APTER] We actually had built into our contract... Our agreement was an understanding that we would never work in a boring situation.
