Words to Live by By Dave McElheran, Chaplain

“For the word of the Lord is right and true; he is faithful in all he does.” Psalm 33: 4

Many times people will tell us things that are not necessarily true or right. The television commercials tell us, that if we put a certain cream on our faces, it will take away all our wrinkles. If we take a certain vitamin our youth will be restored and we will feel young again. The one word we can depend on is God’s word. God does not lie. He says he loves us with an everlasting love, unconditional love, perfect love and he is faithful. On this we can depend.

Stan Boquist: A Life Well Lived Interviewed by Ruben Wilson, Resident

STAN BOQUIST is a native Oregonian and was born on July 12, 1924, in Portland, Oregon. He attended Grant High School and the University of Oregon, receiving a degree in business administration in December of 1948. In the fall of 1942 the Army Reserve called him into active duty and it was off to Basic Training in South Carolina. He was fortunately chosen to attend Georgetown University in Washington D.C. under the Army ASTP Program. In May of 1944 the entire program folded in antici- pation of the invasion of Europe. Germany, Fall 1944 Stan was sent to join the 102nd Combat Infantry Division for additional training and they landed about 80 days after D-Day at Cherbourg, France. The 102nd went “on line” in mid-September 1944 in Germany, and fought through to the Elbe River, where they met with the Russian troops at the end of the war on May 8, 1945.

Stan says, “I was simply a 19- to 20-year-old sergeant living life in fox holes, a la saving Private Ryan, during the drive to Elbe and the Battle of the Bulge.” Despite the intense fighting, Stan spent just a few weeks in a field hospital in Belgium. “It was an experience like no other. I consider himself to be a lucky and blessed guy.” Stan returned home on Jan. 1, 1945—Christmas and New Year’s Eve 1944 were spent on a troop transport. He went home to finish college, go into business, marry and raise a family.

At the University of Oregon, he met Kay Becker, the love of his life. They were married on September 17, 1949. It was 65 years of a great, fun-filled and exciting marriage. The family traveled, golfed, and camped with wonderful memories of their home in Black Butte, beach trips, and winter breaks to California.

Upon graduation in January 1949 Stan joined his father in a commercial casualty insurance agency. He retired in 1996 as a senior vice president of Campbell, Galt & Newlands (now USI). Stan was active in various business and charitable organizations, including the Southeast Rotary Club where he continues to partici- pate. For 10 years he also taught Alive /55, a safe driving program sponsored by AARP. Seniors who completed the course received an insurance discount as well as a refresher course on safe driving practices.

Stan and Kay raised their family in the Eastmoreland neighborhood of Portland. They then moved to Raleigh Hills where they lived for the past 40 years. In mid- 2013 Stan and Kay realized that Kay needed additional care. Fortunately, he found Hearthstone at Murrayhill. During the moving process Kay suffered a stroke and passed away at the end of October.

Daughter, Judith, and her husband live in Seattle; they have two grown boys. Steve, who is retired from Portland Parks Department, lives in Portland. Debra, a science teacher, lives in Hood River with her 16-year-old daughter.

Stan comments that Hearthstone has been a great experience for him, enabling him to meet many new friends and experience new activities. He was pleased to Stan and his wife in be recently invited to join the Resident Council, representing the second floor of Palm Desert independent community. It looks like we may be hearing more from him!

Anna’s Place Moments

was our favorite word on Monday July 14th. The month of July was de clared National Ice Cream Month by none other than our past president, Ronald Reagan, in 1984. As the residents walked into our tropical paradise surrounded by Hawaiian inspired décor and real plants, it made the imagination of the island come closer to home. Residents all received leis around their necks, a smile, and don’t forget the popular ALOHA made residents say OOOHH with amazement! It even made some others start dancing the hula with the soft background music. Tropical ice cream smooth- ies were served to everyone with fruit wedges and brought summer relief to all who attended. The day then ended with hula hand movements shown and performed with real bub- bles floating around everyone.

A tremendous Mahalo to all who came and enjoyed the Luau with everyone at Anna’s Place.

need help with dressing, bathing, meal delivery and other services on an ongoing basis, Assisted Living is where you live. As you know, we have well-trained, compassionate staff that are more than happy to assist you with a smile.

If you do everything independently, you most likely chose the “Independent” option. You may wonder why I put “Independent” in quotation marks. We call it “Independent,” but it is actually licensed as a residential care facility (RCF). This designation offers our residents a big benefit—one that would not be available if our community was merely “Independent.” Licensed as an RCF means that Hearthstone can provide nurs- ing and caregiving services 24/7. Everybody residing in an RCF has a chart containing important infor- mation (medication orders, advance directive, personal/contact info, and physician reports) in case of emergency.

Even if you live in the RCF part of Hearthstone, please feel free to call if you are feeling under the weather, have a fall, or simply have a question. You’ll be helping us do what we love to do: take care of our extend- ed family. Thanks for joining me for the tour. I hope it was helpful in getting to know your home better.
