GROOMED FOR SUCCESS On a Saturday last July, Leslie Janecka, coordinator of the Kentucky Equine Management Internship Pro- gram, was preparing to show the incoming Fall Class of 2010 around Old Friends Farm in Georgetown when a large shipping truck drove up. Boxes began piling out. They were full of trophies belonging to the late Hall of Fame trainer Bobby Frankel, who had donated them to Old Friends. The young men and women crowded around to see. The first extracted Leslie Janecka trophy was one earned by Frankel's triple Grade I winner Marquetry, a new addition to Old Friends after being pensioned from stud duties. "We brought the trophy over to Marquetry and let him take a look at it," laughed Janecka. "The kids loved it." It was a serendipitous moment, as Janecka was introducing much the class to the unique world of Thor- oughbreds. In a span of 15 minutes, they saw some of the best the industry has to offer, from the excitement stirred by a champion runner to the compassion of an old warrior being allowed to live out his days peace- fully. The Kentucky Equine Management Internship Pro- gram, or KEMI, was launched in January of 2000. Its goal was simple: to attract young, qualified people with equine backgrounds to the Thoroughbred industry. They idea came from a group within the Kentucky Farm Managers Club, who wondered, "Where have all the workers gone?" "They were wondering why people weren=t attracted to the Thoroughbred industry--and that=s still the ques- tion today," said Janecka. "Nobody=s made it under- standable to them or exciting to them, because there=s so many other things out there. So we go out and tell people." The program works like this: interns come to Lexington for a six-month semester. They pay tuition (currently a modest $2,000), but are given free board at various farms around the Bluegrass, where they work alongside the farm's staff. They also receive an hourly wage, and by semester's end can often earn up to $7,500, easily offsetting the cost of the tuition. Classes typically number 25, winnowed down from a pool of roughly 75 applicants. "We also have weekly meetings and have speakers from every facet of the industry," said Janecka. "We talk to them about veterinary work, farm management, training--we want them to get a broad picture." P TDN HEADLINE NEWS • 12/23/10 • PAGE 6 of 7 • thoroughbreddailynews.com

Host farms have included Adena Springs, Ashford Stud, Claiborne Farm, Darby Dan, Darley, Gainesway, Juddmonte Farms, Lane's End, Mill Ridge Farm, Overbrook Farm, Pin Oak Stud, Shadwell Farm, Three Chimneys, and WinStar. Janecka, KEMI's lone paid em- ployee, spends about half the year on the road, visiting colleges, uni- versities and horse clubs putting the word out about KEMI and the Thoroughbred world at large. In- coming students must have previ- ous horse experience, be it on a ranch in Montana or showing horses in Maryland, and Janecka Class in Session prefers they have a two-year, equine-related degree. "We want them to be able to come right on to the farms and know how to take temperatures and things like that," said Janecka. Janecka said much of her initial work involves setting students straight. "There are a lot of misconceptions about Thoroughbreds, about how we treat our horses," said Janecka. "And you go to some of these places, and they think the Kentucky Derby is the only race in America. They have no idea there's so much more out there. They love horses and want a job working with horses, but they don=t know much about the industry." She added, "Of course their biggest eye-opening here is the value of the horses. Their eyes are like sau- cers-->Horse live like this?= And they learn the negative "The KEMI program is a wonderful opportunity to stereotypes about the horses aren=t true. People do love gain exposure and knowledge of the Thoroughbred their horses and take care of them." industry," said Mathis. The seed money from KEMI came from various farms and individuals, including Khalid Abdullah's Juddmonte Farm, the Niarchos family's Flaxman Holdings, Jose- phine Abercrombie's Abercrombie Foundation, and W.T. Young's Overbrook Farm. In addition to tuition, KEMI is sustained through donations, including the Farm Managers' annual golf scramble. Like many educa- tional endeavors, KEMI has had to work hard to ensure adequate funding in recent years. "It=s hard to go and ask someone for money when they=re having such a hard time themselves," said Janecka. "What we=d love to do is start an endowment program, so that we could operate off the interest that's generated. We actually have one prominent horse person who=d like to donate, but he wants to see it as a group effort. He=d like to see three or four other people step in and provide the funding. Then we wouldn't have to go out and ask for money each year." KEMI's Board of Directors is comprised of unpaid volunteers. They include Juddmonte Farms manager Garrett O'Rourke, president of the board; Lane's End broodmare manager Callan Strouss, vice president; Three Chimneys Farm's stallion manager Sandy Hat- field, secretary; Juddmonte's financial controller Jackie Smith, treasurer; and Laurie Lawrence, Ph.D., educa- tional chair. Small though it's been, KEMI has already done much to draw in qualified new workers, who ultimately will help the industry's future. "We've been to every state except Hawaii and Alaska, and we've got- ten students from every state except Hawaii and West Virginia," said Janecka. "If you love horses and you want to work with horses, there=s probably no better place to be than here." Juddmonte's Garrett O'Rourke said the future suc- cess of the business is contingent on the foundations laid by outfits like KEMI. "In a time when we are weak in our industry in finding ways to cast a net over future Greg Avioli is backing the Breeders= Cup Thoroughbred industry participants, Q & A with Breeders= Cup boss KEMI has quietly and very effectively James Emmett, Sports Pro recruited third-level equine students to Kentucky and immersed them in the industry," said O'Rourke.
