Our client comments ‘Inspired by water and the Far East, the Garden at Pengelly Mill has been several years in the making and is now a substantial space offering countless intimate areas of interest as well as lovely flowing lawns and decked areas covering nearly 5 acres.

It was not always so!

The original garden around the house and barn was a simple grassed area but using a series of natural springs, underground piping and pumped water features this has been transformed into an oasis of ponds, bridges and beds containing a lovely selection of unusual shrubs mature trees and a substantial collection of Acers. The area now enjoys a footpath winding alongside the stream and includes the greenhouse containing a lovely old vine and mature cactus.

The garden has been electrified and is transformed at night using coloured LED lighting, post lighting, up lighters and individual spot lamps.

The first additional plot adjoining the property was purchased a few years later and contained the lake. At the time of originally buying Pengelly Mill back in 2003 there was no hint of a lake so close to the property! The area was just a bog with the lake encased in gorse and almost entirely invisible. It was purely by chance and whilst walking in an adjacent field that I noticed a glint of water!

Since that day and through the use of substantial land drains the area has been totally transformed. An additional pond was dug, lawns and decking areas created and the polished marble waterfall feature added.

The cleared lake area has been transformed into areas of both formal and natural interest with substantial decking areas at either end. The water is approximately 10’ to 11’ deep at the centre and beautifully clear and clean. The whole area is a wildlife delight as well as a lovely barbecue and party area. The lake is perfect for fishing swimming and boating.

The third adjoining area was purchased just a couple of years ago and now contains a copse of Christmas trees, a smaller second lake, more substantial decking areas as well as substantial formal and more natural lawn areas and the hidden Asian garden.

The hidden Asian garden has been a delight to create and a wonderful project for a new owner to continue if they wish to. It has been created in a copse of willow trees, some “laid down” and contains a series of walkways, water features, ponds, streams, bridges and lawns. The area is full of bamboo, rare shrubs, Acers, beautifully planted pots, cloud trees and topiary. It also contains lovely Buddha sculptures and carvings and interesting statuary. The area also features a substantial waterfall, viewing tower and the individual hidden patio areas are a treat to discover.

Water is a major feature of the entire garden and flows in streams, ponds the lakes and in a series of small and some major water features.

The garden can be enjoyed as it stands with fairly simple maintenance or the new owner can continue to develop the potential into the natural undeveloped areas’
