BE A GOOD PERSON THAN IT IS TO BE A GOOD HOCKEY PLAYER”

“WE WILL GET BETTER EVERYDAY!!” Senior Hockey Academy COACHES MESSAGE I would like to take the opportunity to welcome every student athlete to another exciting year with the Louis St. Laurent Hockey BARONS Acade- my. This year’s ice sessions will focus on technical skill development along with tangible “next level habits” and details (hockey sense, situational awareness, puck pursuit skills, what the player does without the puck, support with and away from the puck, pressure with and without the puck, puck pro- tection, time/space/positioning, gap control, reading pressure, offensive and defensive structure, transition, undetermined possession, read and respond awareness to situations with and without the puck as well as positional aware- ness in those situations) to compliment your current individual skill set. Along with Above the Crease Goaltending the ice sessions will include technical and tactical elements relating to goaltending, skating, puck handling, shooting, checking, passing, angling, stick emphasis and positioning. The ice sessions will involve the concepts of 'pressure with the puck' as well as 'pressure without the puck' both offensively and defensively and will include the concept of structure relating to position specific emphasis rein- forcing the Defensemen, Forward and Goaltending “habits required for the next level“ whatever that may be for all of our student athletes. At the end of every session we will run confined area situations to promote ‘decisions with and without the puck,’ ‘the concept of time and space,’ ‘intellectual and physical skills,’ and ‘essential hockey skills where the game becomes the teacher.’ Anatoli Tarasov, the famous Russian Coach said that “the greatest gift you can give to your players is to teach them to coach themselves so that they can act independently of you, the coach.” We require an “open mind” from every one of you to be receptive towards improving yourself as a player. Coach Dan, Coach Jamie, Coach Jaret and I owe it to every student athlete to be “insistent” on proper habits while at the same time task each of you with having an exceptional work ethic. Our coaches will be extremely pre- pared and our challenge to you is to approach each session with the mind- set of “doing everything better than you have ever done it before” … every drill … every repetition … every save … that is how you “Win Forever” and that is how you can make the Louis St. Laurent BARONS Hockey Academy an unbelievable opportunity for you towards preparing and achieving your goals in hockey and in life.

GOALTENDING ACADEMY OUTLINE

Testing  See Testing Sheet and month 1/ session 1 practice plan

Stance: (On Feet and Butterfly)  Proper Knee Flexion  Positioning  Torso Positioning  Edge position  Tall Butterfly

Movements: (Forwards/Backwards/Lateral/diagonal)  C-Cuts Forwards/Backwards  Shuffles/ Post-to-Post  T-Glides  Back 45 pivots  Inside Edge Push  Butterfly Slides  Conditioning using in crease movement  Challenging and setting (getting body centered and still)

Angles:  Getting to the middle of the net  Squaring up to the shooter (pivoting)  Taking away angle  Sharp angle plays and Post coverage  Blocking versus Reacting (understanding in tight versus longer shots)  Lateral Movement with optimal angle coverage

**Remember that sliding only gives you an option to move in a straight line so getting into the middle of the save angle is key rather than chal- lenging. T-Push allows you to move to the save angle on an arc**

“WE WILL GET BETTER EVERYDAY!!” Louis St. Laurent BARONS Hockey Academy

GOALTENDING ACADEMY OUTLINE Cont.

Movement with Save Techniques  Back 45 degree with butterfly slide (controlling body and distance of slide)  Inside edge push (proper contact of skate and rotation)  Butterfly extension and recovery  Glove and Blocker save techniques (leaning into shots, direct movement to puck)

**Remember a lateral slide backwards is tough from a stand still. Build mo- mentum by: Backing in, Rotating, and Exploding off your skate**

Puck Handling  Forehand rings  Half wall passes  Clearing attempts  Communication codes  Backhand rings  Backhand half wall passes  Stretch passes

Glove, Blocker, and Body Saves:  Proper Glove Positioning (Reacting = Longer Shots/Blocking = in tight shots  Tracking Puck  Leaning into shot (moving shoulder and torso into shot)  Absorbing puck with arms and torso (funneling puck into body)  Direct glove movement to puck (moving straight to the puck without swinging)  Glove and Blocker use while in a butterfly, butterfly slide, or inside edge push

** Use active hands when the shot is out of the blocking zone**

“WE WILL GET BETTER EVERYDAY!!” Louis St. Laurent BARONS Hockey Academy

GOALTENDING ACADEMY OUTLINE Cont.

In Close Sharpe Angle Shots and Behind the Net Pay:  Understanding what the shooter sees on the sharp angle  Sealing the post  Stick position when puck is behind the net  Knee drop position  Importance of having a loaded pushing leg off the post  Recovery out of slides on sharp angle play

**If you master the sharp angle play on both sides of the net it will let you focus more on the high priority scoring areas such as the slot**

Reflex Saves and Desperation Saves:  Explain importance of never giving up on a puck  Practice drills to enhance reaction time  Scramble techniques  Recovery from an unbalanced position

** One attribute that separates a good goalie from a great goalie is battle and want to never let the puck in the net (ie. Tim Thomas, formerly of the Bruins)**

GOALS FOR THE FITNESS PROGRAM:

My goals for the athletes in the hockey program are to increase both the athlete’s knowledge and performance. To accomplish these goals I will ensure that each athlete takes ownership in his training and understands the purpose behind what we are doing. Ultimately I am striving to make each student a better athlete; if we can accomplish this goal becoming a better hockey player will happen with all of the time spent on the ice.

The process to accomplishing these goals will be as follows:  Build a solid foundation of basic fitness (strength, aerobic, anaer- obic)  From that foundation we can focus on improving specific strength, power, speed, agility and quickness.  I will teach the athletes to warm-up and cool down properly to prevent injuries and enhance performance.  If an athlete currently has an injury, I will aid in the rehabilitation process.

Some of the training methods that we will use include:  Weight training including Olympic lifting  Sprint training  Plyometrics  Agility training  Quick feet drills  Aerobic/ Anaerobic intervals  Shuttle runs  Medicine ball throws  Core/trunk training  Dynamic Warm-up

THE GOLDEN BEAR WAY

Sacrifices that are made, "for the good of the team," must be made equally by all or there is no team.

It would not be thought of as uncommon that within competitive ath- letics that the philosophy of fair playing time would be viewed as un- conventional, because it requires immense courage and an unwaver- ing commitment to implement. For those who dare however, the re- sults will be phenomenal. The results that occur under this philosophy can best be described with one word; RESPECT. It is this respect that the players develop for one another that is the key to the magic of sports. Respect is the essential element that allows for the creation of the TEAM. This philosophy forces the players, through a dependence upon one another, to support and believe in each other. When a coach provides an environment of expectations, responsibilities and oppor- tunities, he makes the statement that, he believes in himself as a coach, he believes in his team and he believes in every player on that team.

There is no greater force or effective motivator in sports than all team members believing in each other and feeling responsible for the suc- cess or failure of their team.

There is nothing more important than for a coach to provide an envi- ronment in which respect and appreciation for all involved should be the primary goal. Once this goal is reached the magic will present it- self. It will be difficult to understand at first but soon you will realize that what has occurred is that the whole is now much greater than the sum of its parts. Through the support of the coaches and the belief that all players will rise to a competitive level equally, from this on, the players together will play at a level greater than ever imag- ined. The magic is there within every player, as long as they feel as an equal part of the team it will remain. Exclude just one team member however, and the magic will fade and be replaced by resentment and despair.

The easiest thing to do in coaching is to allow oneself to give up on a kid.

The hardest thing to do is to avoid doing the easiest and ensure that everyone remains a part of the team’s success.

The Student/Teacher Relationship

Most teachers are willing to help you any way they can as long as you show a willingness to do your part. Here are a few things to remember:

 Don’t be afraid to talk to your teachers.

 Ask for help and assistance on specific areas of study – remember, teachers enjoy helping you learn.

 A student doing poorly who seeks a teacher’s help will rate higher in the teacher’s eyes than an indifferent student of any kind.

 Never say you need a grade, always state what you want to achieve from the course.

Be Mentally Tough!

Just as hockey players need to be mentally tough, so do students. It takes a mental toughness, self-discipline, concentration, resili- ency and drive to be a good student. Like your hockey skills you have to use these skills every day while striving to improve them.
