Voter Guide Contact Us DSA-LA 2020 Voter Guide 1 Democratic Socialists of America Los Angeles November 3 2020 [email protected] Voter Guide Contact us DSA-LA 2020 Voter Guide 1 Introduction Thank you for using the DSA-LA 2020 General Election Voter Guide. This guide was written by members of the DSA-LA Electoral Politics Committee with contributions from the 2020 primary guide produced in collaboration with the Future Left. Authors approached writing this guide with socialist values and a progressive, pragmatic lens. We see this as an opportunity to share information with fellow DSA-LA members, LA voters, and other community members about political forces shaping the many communities that make up Los Angeles. The candidates in this guide are recommended by DSA-LA’s Electoral Politics Committee, not the entire DSA-LA chapter. DSA-LA as a chapter votes for endorsements. Endorsed candidates are the candidates or campaigns DSA-LA commits to working for. Only Konstantine Anthony, Fatima Iqbal-Zubair, Nithya Raman, and Prop 15, are endorsed by DSA- LA. Voting for the President this year might not bring us Medicare for All, but voting in municipal and state races arguably has more impact on our daily lives. Voting for Konstantine Anthony will get Burbank residents closer to rent control. Voting for Fatima Iqbal-Zubiar will be a start to putting an end to energy companies’ blatant environmental racism in South LA. Voting for Nithya Raman will bring a candidate demanding strong housing policies and advocating for renters and our unhoused neighbors onto our virtue- signalling, do-nothing city council. Voting for Prop 15 is voting to tax billionaire companies like Disney to properly fund our schools, public services and vital resources to fight the pandemic. Join DSA-LA to work towards building a better future. Our government, our economy and our society has been stolen from us by plutocrats, but we can take it back if we band together and fight: www.dsausa.org/join Table of Contents DSA-LA 2020 Voter Guide Unsurprisingly, House Minority Leader and Trump minion Kevin McCarthy has held this seat for years. It’s pretty unlikely that he’ll lose it now, but Kim Mangone is putting up a great fight—in the primary, she won 33.5% of the vote, a better showing than any primary challenger McCarthy has ever faced. An Air Force veteran, systems engineer, and single mom with no political experience, Mangone has run a surprisingly strong grassroots campaign on a platform of not being Kevin McCarthy.

July 9, 2019 The Honorable Anthony Portantino Chair, Senate Appropriations Committee State Capitol, Room 3086 Sacramento, CA 95814 RE: Assembly Bill 1080 (Gonzalez) – SUPPORT IF AMENDED As Amended July 5, 2019 Dear Senator Portantino: On behalf of the Rural County Representatives of California (RCRC), I am writing with respect to Assembly Bill 1080, authored by Assembly Member Lorena Gonzalez, which, among other things, requires manufacturers to source, reduce, and recycle single- use packaging and products sold in California. While we are strongly supportive of what the bill seeks to accomplish, we believe some amendments are vital to avoid costly burdens on local governments. RCRC is an association of thirty-six rural California counties, and the RCRC Board of Directors is comprised of elected supervisors from each of those member counties. California is in the process of implementing SB 1383 (Lara, Chapter 395, 2016), which establishes ambitious goals to reduce landfill disposal of organic waste 75 percent below 2014 levels by 2025. CalRecycle’s far-reaching SB 1383 regulation could cost as much as $20 billion to implement and poses many challenges for local governments. Considering the massive costs local governments will soon face with SB 1383 implementation, it is vital to avoid imposing additional costly requirements on local jurisdictions. Previous versions of AB 1080 appropriately placed compliance obligations on manufacturers and retailers who produce and sell single-use products; however, the June 20 amendments significantly

  • Newly Elected Signal Hill Councilmember Endorses Lena Gonzalez for State Senate
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 11, 2019 Contact: Sergio Carrillo (310) 748-6495 [email protected] NEWLY ELECTED SIGNAL HILL COUNCILMEMBER ENDORSES LENA GONZALEZ FOR STATE SENATE LONG BEACH, CA - Continuing to amass endorsements from local elected officials, Long Beach City Councilwoman Lena Gonzalez announced today that she has received the endorsement of newly elected Signal Hill Councilmember, Keir Jones. Jones' passion for public service and community involvement dates back to his early college years but was awaken during California’s battle over Proposition 8 which banned LGBTQ marriages in California. Jones was elected to the Signal Hill City Council in the March 5th, 2019 Municipal Election. He is the first non-incumbent to be the highest vote-getter in over 20 years. He has served as the City Clerk for the past two years where he has helped to ensure Signal Hill saw its largest voter turnouts in decades with nearly 60% of residents voting in November 2018. He has also led efforts to align Signal Hill elections with the California Primaries to ensure every voter has an opportunity to make their voice heard. "I am excited to give my first endorsement as Councilmember-Elect to Councilwoman Lena Gonzalez for State Senate," said Councilmember-Elect Keir Jones. "She is the right person to represent the people of Signal Hill in the State Senate. Her advocacy and leadership on policies that support working people, increase access to green space and protect small businesses is needed in Sacramento. As someone who knows the impact of a close election, having lost my first try for City Council by one vote, I encourage everyone to pay attention to this race and send Lena Gonzalez to the State Senate on March 26th,” he continued.

Cities and Counties Flourishing under AB 32 California’s pioneering clean energy and climate law (AB 32) is advancing a strong economy and healthy environment – proof that a thriving, low-carbon economy is good for California communities. January 6, 2021 The Honorable Cecilia Aguiar-Curry California State Assembly State Capitol, Room 5144 Sacramento, California 95814 Re: AB 14 (Aguiar-Curry) – Communications: broadband services: California Advanced Services Fund. Support – As Introduced December 7, 2020 Dear Assembly Member Aguiar-Curry: On behalf of the California State Association of Counties (CSAC), representing all 58 counties in the state, I am pleased to support your AB 14, related to broadband and the infrastructure subsidies needed to deploy it more broadly. Inequitable access to broadband is a longstanding issue, but the COVID-19 pandemic’s effects on students, workers, small businesses, and everyday life has highlighted just how severe and urgent the disparity is. Bringing our infrastructure into the modern era is critical for all communities, whether or not providers consider them profitable. Addressing these issues will undoubtedly require additional resources to be available as soon as possible, so the additional funding AB 14 would authorize—as well as the authority to issue a revenue bond of up to $1 billion—is critically important. Counties also appreciate the explicit authority for Boards of Supervisors to approve the construction and operation of broadband infrastructure and services. For the aforementioned reasons, we support AB 14 and appreciate your efforts on this important issue. We would like to work with you and your co-authors as this bill moves forward to ensure it contains the reforms necessary to achieve the greatest good for the greatest number
