Title: Community Conversations: What Matters To Us Report

Summary: The Community Conversations Report, entitled What Matters To Us, will be launched at a dedicated public event on 4 October 2019. The event will detail the process and 64 recommendations, alongside participants talking about their experience.

Background West Integrated Care Partnership (CWICP) commissioned a series of Community Conversations across Cheshire West to help us better understand the experiences of people with long-term conditions and their loved ones.

A voluntary sector provider (Cheshire Community Action) was commissioned by the Council on behalf of CWICP, to facilitate the Community Conversations process, based upon an Appreciative Inquiry model. This is an approach that focuses on what works well within the health and care system, how those strengths could be built on that would help people to better manage their long term conditions in the future.

More than 1,300 hours of Community Conversations were held – engaging more than 500 local people and generating 64 key recommendations to help improve health and care in Cheshire West.

The conversations initiated and encouraged discussion and debate about the local health and social care system and the problems it faces, as a way of deepening people’s understanding and appreciation of the issues. By doing so, it enabled participants to develop informed recommendations about how issues might be tackled at different levels (personally, community-wide and system-wide). Issues raised and discussed included the following; access to GPs, social isolation, signposting, peer support groups and the quality of health and care information.

Recommendations from the project have informed and been incorporated into the new five year Cheshire West Place Plan (2019-2024). The Project was also featured within the Cheshire West and Health and Wellbeing Board Local Government Association Case Study as an example of good practice: local.gov.uk/cheshire-west-and-chester-health-and-wellbeing-board
