Team - Biathlon Selection - FISU 2021 Winter Games

The 30th Winter Universiade will take place in the city of /Lenzerheide, Switzerland which is a city in central Switzerland, embedded within an impressive mountainous panorama with Rihi, Pilatus and Titlis. Situated in the German-speaking portion of the country Lucerne is the most populous town in central Switzerland with a population of approximately 82,000 people. The is scheduled from January 21-31, 2021. The Universiade is every two years in various cities around the world. It is one of the largest winter multisport events worldwide, second only in size to the . The Games will take place over 11 days and will host 1600 athletes from more than 50 countries competing in 10 sports in 7 venues.

ATHLETE ELIGIBILITY

Only the following may participate as a competitor in the Universiade: a) Students who are currently officially registered as proceeding towards a degree or diploma at the university or similar institute whose status is recognized by the appropriate national academic authority of their country; b) Former student of the institution mentioned in a) who have obtained their academic degree or diploma in the year preceding the event.

All competitors must satisfy the following conditions:

i) Be a national of the country they represent (with exception of Figure Skating) ii) Be at least 18 and less than 25 years of age on January 1st in the year of the event (WU2021: participants must be born between January 1, 1996 and December 31, 2003) iii) Athletes participating in FISU Sport Events must represent the same country as in events of their respective International Federation, changes of sport nationality must follow respective IF rules iv) No athlete or official under a current suspension from FISU, IF or the National Federation of his/her country may take part in the Winter Universiade. v) The athlete must abide by the Biathlon Canada Code of Conduct, policies, procedures, and guidelines, and be a member of Biathlon Canada.

Open call for Team Selection:

The High Performance Working Group (HPWG) will make discretionary selections for a team of up to 6 Men and 6 Women.

Selections will be made by the High Performance Working Group (HPWG), which is composed of the Biathlon Canada General Manager (Heather Ambery) and Board Representative (Lyle McLeod). Decisions will be informed by advisors to the HPWG. The HPWG may decide who to contact depending on the decision being made and the individuals involved in the decision.

Potential advisors (this list is non-exhaustive): Biathlon Canada National Team Coaches,Tour Coaches, Long Term Athlete Development Director, Athlete and Coach Development Manager, Club coaches, athlete representatives etc. NOTE: The HPWG reserves the right to contact whomever necessary to make the best decision.

Discretionary Selection: The HPWG will make team selection decisions in consideration of any or all of the following:

• Current and historical results; • Demonstrated ability to meet the competitive level of FISU Games; • Fit with the appropriate competition level for the athlete’s long-term development; • Strategic long-term athlete development; • Selection process impacted by illness, injury or force majeure; • Recent improvements in performance parameters, such as shooting performance or ski speed; • Recent decline in performance parameters, such as shooting performance or ski speed; • Ability to effectively contribute to a relay performance • Competition field size and quality • Athlete behavior and compliance to Biathlon Canada’s policies, procedures, and guidelines.

Should no athletes meet established criteria for a Tour position, or should an athlete decline selection, the HPWG may:

• Fill the position as a discretionary selection; or, • Leave the position unfilled. The HPWG may choose not to fill an available tour position based on Biathlon Canada budget considerations and overall long-term athlete development strategy.

This event is completely self-funded and the estimated cost for each participant is:

• Flight and Train to Lucerne, Switzerland (Inclusive of travel / medical insurance) $1500 - $1800 • Games Fee, Inclusive ground transportation, medical and mission staff support, Team Canada kit, FISU entry/registration fee, operations / admin cost, on-site logistics and Team Canada activities $2075 • Accommodations Costs, 70 euros ($110 CND~) per night per person inclusive of accommodations and meals (based on max length of stay 17 nights) $1870 • Biathlon related cost, including race uniform, wax, coaching/tech support, ~$400

Total estimated cost: $5,800-$6200

*costs are approximate and will vary depending on the sport, departure city, date of travel, exchange rate, visas, etc.

Many student athletes have been able to find sponsorship for half or more of their costs, from the university/college they attend, their club, private donors etc. Tax deductible receipt can often be issued through USports for support of the team.

**Please note that as we continue to navigate the implications of COVID-19, there is a possibility of changes or cancellation of this tour, including from Biathlon Canada, independently of FISU or USports. We will be communicating any adjustments with as much notice as possible.
