THE object of t hi s b o ok is to enable people interested in to identify those they meet with while walking in the hill stati ons o f the Himalayas and Kashmi r and those they see i n the Kashmir valley . The birds dealt with are the ones commonly i seen IN S U M M ER at such places . As n ne out o f t en of hill birds move to lower o f levels in winter, the population a hill station in winter di ff ers from that in summer . Had the scope of this book included birds seen in winter at the various hill stations , and those f ound in summer only at lower eleva tions than 5 000 feet above the sea-level or hi 00 it s gher altitudes than 75 , bulk would have been considerably increased . It would have attained even greater dimensions had I noticed the rare birds that are sometimes seen in hill stations in summer .

Paradoxical though it may sound, the value of this book lies largely in i t s omissions P r ef ace

If this key had included all the birds of H Kashmir and the imalayas , it would have i t s i bewildered the user by complex ty, and

so i i t s . As it it fa led in object stands , should enable anyone who consults it to identif y re adily twenty-nine-thirtieths o f the birds he sees i n summer at elevations between 5000 and 75 00 f eet . Except in so f ar as they may serve as aids to identification , nothing has been said about o f i i i s the habits b rds in this book, wh ch merely an artificial key . A treatise on the life -histories and habits o f the birds o f Kashmir and the Hi malayas has i M f yet to be wr tten . uch in ormation , how o f con ever, about the habits these birds is ’ t ai ne d in Hume s Nest: and Egg: of Indi an ’ Bi rdr erdon s Bi rd: o Indi a , I f , the bird volumes of the Fanna of Br i ti rb Indi a and my own little B rd; o tb a Indi an Hi lls book entitled i f . DESC RI PTI V E LI ST OF BI RDS HOW TO USE THIS B OOK

T HIS key has been compiled on the principle followed in Indi an Bi rds . Even as the latter has been the means of teaching scores o f people the names of the birds commonly seen in the so hi plains of , will t s , I venture to hope , so i n enable anyone who wishes to do , to learn a very short time the names o f all the birds seen commonly in summer in Kashmir and at the various Himalayan hill stations . The student Should make a note regarding any strange bird seen , giving the colours in it s plumage and any anatomical peculiarity, O . n such as a crest , a long tail or bill returning P o f to the house, art I the book should be consulted . The bird in question should find place in two or more of the classes of birds P so set in that art, and may be down as being A probably one o f two or three Specie s. reference to the descriptions in Part II Should complete the identification . m To take an easy exa ple . The observer sees

II How to Use Thi s Book

He a striking bird . notes that its body is o f about the size of that the myna , that it has

a long tail and that there are blue, black,

brown and white in the plumage , and the bill H is bright red . e consults in Part I of the B book, irds having the tail long in propor ” He tion to the body . finds there are fifteen f H o these birds . e then refers to the class B irds of which the plumage is black, blue, ” brown and white , and finds that there are o f o f two only three these, which only have the He i tail long . is thus sat sfied that the unknown f bird is a blue magpie . The act that the bill i s red leads him to infer that it is the red-billed A f blue magpie . re erence to the description

of this speci es in Part II confirms the diagnosis . I may add that the descriptions have

designedly been made as brief as possible . Too much detail might easily hinder ide nt ific a i t on , as in that case the descriptions would often include inconspi cuous f eatures which the observer had f ailed to notice . A full description o f every bird f ound i n F auna o Br i ti sh Indi a India is given in the f , to which this book i s really a Compani on and a guide for the novice . Colour aff ords the easiest means of identify i ing the great maj or ty of birds , but in many cases the colours displayed are not of a nature to admit o f strict classification . Hi malayan and Kashmi ri Bi rds the lower parts are in the shade and so appear A darker than they really are . s it is often of advantage to a bird to be inconspicuous , natural selection has doubtless been responsible in many cases for the fact that the lower s plumage i of paler hue than the upper . As this book is intended for the field observer I shall describe these brown birds as they appear to the observe r in the field and so describe simply as an earthy-brown bird one which is - earth coloured above and creamy below .
