St Stephens Harriers AGM 2018 -2019 – August 10th 2019 1 PRESIDENT’S REPORT The past 12 months has been one of transition. In response to feedback from members in previous years, the club took the significant step to withdraw from the 2018-19 AV Shield competition. This is a result of the competition not meeting expectations, nor adding to the athletic experience of our members. This is anticipated to be a short term decision and allows us to refocus the club and follow a clearly defined strategy concentrating on middle distance events and the AV Cross Country competition. It is the view of the majority of our members that middle distance is our area of expertise and the history of the club is built on previous success in that discipline. Overwhelming feedback is that SSH is a “harriers” club and we should focus on that history created over many years of competition.

To date, our report card more than justifies this decision. As I write this article, the club is leading the Men’s Premier AV XCR competition and is proving more than competitive in Division 3. For the first time in many years we are also able to consistently field a team in the Women’s divisions. This is largely due to an aggressive recruitment campaign which has led to our teams having the commitment and depth to be competitive against the best in the state. It is also very apparent that there is a real team “spirit” and camaraderie around that club that has not been present for years. We are now boasting within our ranks two current national champions, Whitney Sharpe (The Mile) and Stu McSweyn (10Km) as well as an Oceania champion (Ben Buckingham). All three continue to run PBs that put them in the top tier of athletes within and imminent, or potential, national representation. We have a group of athletes who can rival most of those who have previously run at the elite level for the club. This success means that a number of our club records have fallen, or are under extreme threat. This “on track” success is due to the dedication and enthusiasm of the athletes who all must be congratulated on their efforts. It has been a long time since we have witnessed such team success around the club.

This success is due, of course to the contribution of all, but largely the enthusiasm by our club captain Jamie Wagstaff. Jamie has been instrumental in selecting teams before each meeting, generating enthusiasm and a real competitive spirit on the day, and concluding each event with a brilliant synopsis of the day’s events. Thanks for your dedication to the task Jamie!

In addition, I cannot ignore the efforts of our coach, Nick Bowden. Nick’s enthusiasm and commitment to the club is unsurpassed. Without his vision and understanding of what we can and cannot do as a club we would not be enjoying the success we are having today. Nick clearly has a strong connection with all members. For that we are all grateful and I also thank him for his efforts.

However, this is only part of the story. We are in the process of reconfiguring (if not streamlining) the administration of the club off the track. We are beginning to transition the administrative roles to a “new” younger generation of club members to ensure continuity and the long-term welfare of the club. Consistent with this stage of the club’s development, Helen Nolan, Secretary, is stepping down from that role. Thanks to Helen for the work she has put in over the past 3 years. Jamie Wagstaff has fulfilled the role of Treasurer over the past 2 years and is part of the “new” generation who will take the club to the next stage. It must be mentioned that as we move through this “transition” the current committee is doing a great job picking up from the likes of Helen, Pat Robinson, Michael Georke and Peter Westwood. Thanks to them all. The next phase of the clubs growth will not be easy.

We need to address some very significant issues upon which the club’s future will rely. One of the most important of these is the ongoing decision to not field a team in the AV Shield competition as previously discussed. We are currently discussing with AV the consequences of this decision and any expectations AV may have of member clubs which do not participate in the Shield season. Unfortunately, AV has been somewhat tardy in responding to our request for some ideas on this, and until we have guidance it is hard to frame a coherent strategy going forward. But it is clear that the next step, whatever it may be, will be a crucial decision for the club. However, to date we have been very clear in saying that we want to focus on our strengths (XCR), use our limited resources to fulfil our strategy and return SSH to the prominent place within Vic athletics of past years. This vision remains!

I look forward to continuing down this path to ensure the future progress and sustainability of the red, white and blue.

Greg Nolan President.

St Stephens Harriers AGM 2018 -2019 – August 10th 2019 2 SECRETARY’S REPORT As this is my last report as secretary of St Stephens Athletic Club I want to commence by thanking club members for assisting me over the past three years when the club has gone through some significant change that has required a lot of work by many people. This process of change is continuing while the club refocusses and concentrates on its strengths in an effort to once again dominate as a leading harriers/cross country running club.

In particular I wish to thank Pat Robinson and Greg Schofield who have been wonderful “backstops” and picked up duties in many aspects of managing the secretarial role. Their assistance has been very much appreciated.

As previously mentioned, the past three years has been a time when so much change has occurred, but from which we are now starting to see the benefits of the foundations laid over this period. However, the transition period continues and to be successful, will require the support of all its members to ensure we continue to be a competitive force in the AV competition as well as continue to provide an avenue for any aspiring athlete to fulfil a dream of reaching the heights of the sport.

It has been wonderful to see the recruitment of some elite athletes who have all embraced the culture we have established and who have helped to build a really close, supportive and competitive team and club. Congratulations to all who have participated in this process.

I can’t let the efforts of our club helpers go unnoticed. This is a necessary duty requested by AV to ensure all competitions are run smoothly and safely and that our athletes compete in an environment that reflects the highest of standings in the world of athletics. I understand it is not easy to make such a commitment, so I have been very appreciative of those who have so generously donated their time to assist when called upon.

Thanks to the committee, for their efforts over the past years. Clubs such as SSH would not exist without the efforts of such individuals who devote time to the administration of the club. It would not exist without such people.

I would like to thank our President Greg Nolan for his continued leadership over the last 12 months and the committee for their support. Thanks also to Stu Cooper who continues to produce our newsletter.

I wish all at SSH good fortune and look forward to seeing new members taking over some of the administrative roles of the club.

Helen Nolan Secretary

RAY WEINBERG (1926 – 2018)

In 2018-19 the Club bid farewell to one of its highest achieving members, Ray Weinberg. Twice Olympian (finalist at 1952) and many times National and Victorian sprint hurdling champion, Ray was head coach of Australia’s athletics team at the 1968 Mexico Olympics. He was also an esteemed media commentator, MCG tour guide and designer of Australia’s first Olympic team badge.

Others to pass over the past twelve months include BRUCE CONNOR (aged 90) and DON JOHNSTONE. All three athletes were assets to our Club, and we extend our condolences to their families and friends.
