A brilliant neo-western that takes risks aplenty and gets its rewards. Strong performances all round, although particular mention must go to Ben Foster who de- livers a career best. This film also firmly established writer Taylor Sheridan (Sicario, Wind River), as one of the best scriptwriters of his generation. If you are looking for an insight into the new west, look no further than here folks! – Liam UNFORGIVEN (USA 1992) Directed by and starring CLINT! One of my favorite Westerns with my favorite actor. The line “It’s a hell of a thing, killing a man “ensures Eastwood delivers a raw well-constructed western that is a daring and provocative vision of the old west. Great performances also from Gene Hackman and Morgan Freeman. The violence feels remarkably realistic and the extraordinarily thrilling climatic shootout is worth the wait! – Jamie THE GRAND DUEL (Italy 1972) Ex-Sheriff (Lee Van Cleef) tracks down and begrudgingly helps a man framed for murder in this fantastic Spaghetti Western. Opening with a very 'flippy' gunfight and escape, things just get better as these two trade barbs while beinchased across country.

  • WINTHROP MAGAZINE Winter 2015 MESSAGE from the PRESIDENT
WINTHROP MAGAZINE Winter 2015 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends: The campus community remains energized about the search for Winthrop’s 11th president. As you know, I have had the honor and privilege of serving as the university’s Acting President since last summer. This time of transition has been fruitful for the campus, as together we have made strides consonant with the campus priorities endorsed by the Winthrop University Board of Trustees: • Increase student enrollment, retention, and degree completion; • Continue to support excellence in academic and student life programming; • Enhance the work environment for faculty and staff; and, • Expand not only Winthrop’s role as a partner in the region’s economic growth but also the number of Winthrop supporters inspired to invest in the university’s future. In the not-too-distant future, I will return to my position as provost and vice president for academic affairs; and a new president will come aboard to lead our institution. The good work of the President Search Committee has brought us from more than 80 active candidates to three finalists who have just visited our campus to get to know our community and to be interviewed by representatives of key constituent groups. Feedback from these stakeholders even now shapes discussion among board members who will soon select Winthrop’s next president. My deep appreciation goes out to all who have participated in the search and to those who have watched the process with interest from afar. Your input has been invaluable. I also thank you for the support you have given me personally during this time, as we have worked together to ensure that students remain our highest priority at Winthrop and that they continue to receive the exemplary education for which this university is known.

  • RELATIONS "This Is My Commandment, That You Love One Another (Ἀγαπᾶτε) As I Have Loved (Ἠγάπησα) You
RELATIONS "This is my commandment, that you love one another (ἀγαπᾶτε) as I have loved (ἠγάπησα) you. No one has greater love (ἀγάπην) than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends. John 15:12f There are several words in Greek for the one English word, “love”. I thought I would illustrate their meaning with reference to Hollywood. The first two words are Eros (ἔρως) which means to be infatuated with a person, an object or an idea, and storge (στοργή), which is familial love, the love of parents (and grandparents) for their children. Then two other words: φιλέω and ἀγαπάω. The first means to have a warm affection for another and the second, to wish one well. The ancient Greeks considered Eros to be dangerous and frightening as it involved a “loss of control,” as though to say, “I couldn’t help myself.” It is the appreciation of beauty both external and within. It’s what we view frequently on the silver screen. I would guess that most movies at the moment are romances. To be a success in my book they need to have a memorable musical score and demonstrate that “the path of true love never did run smooth.”1 The lovers need to fight, separate, or even die. I have chosen West Side Story (1957), Leonard Bernstein’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.2 The Jets and the Sharks are two gangs who are bitter enemies, fighting for turf in New York City. Tony and Maria, members of rival gangs, fall in love and sing: “Make of our hands one hand; make of our hearts one heart.” After the rumble, Chino who was engaged to marry Maria shoots Tony and he dies in his lover’s arms.

  • Black Cowboys: Ned Logan and the Portrayal of Blackness in Unforgiven
Black Cowboys: Ned Logan and the Portrayal of Blackness in Unforgiven The Oscars, film critics, and viewers alike have witnessed and praised the plot and performance of Unforgiven for many reasons. Will Munny still stands as the first image that comes to mind when thinking about Unforgiven - either his concerned face, him riding his horse, falling into mud, or infamously killing the town sheriff, Little Bill. Will Munny stands as the face of Unforgiven, similar to how Clint Eastwood stands as the mind behind the film. However, after further watching, re-watching, and engaging in a close viewing of the film, especially as a Black viewer, Ned Logan becomes the most important and different character in the film to me. Analysis into the film (while having my personal Black experience as context) reveals both a dichotomy and a purpose that Ned, and only Ned, has as the only Black figure in the film. I believe these distinct characterizations of Ned relate to his Blackness and the lack of diversity on and off screen. With the context of film history, Black cowboys in the nineteenth century, and through my eyes as a Black film viewer, I center Ned and try to understand how his character speaks to issues in film-making as it pertains to Black stories. Ned’s dynamic in this film interests me because he becomes both hyper-visible and invisible as a character. Almost everything he does and says centers Will, making him a classic sidekick. At the same time, Ned’s guidance to Will, and even his death, single-handedly shape Will’s decisions and character development in the movie.
