Wednesday Walk to Margules Trig, Mundoonen Nature Reserve – 30 May 2012

We started the walk from the Hume Highway between Yass and Gunning, taking the turnoff marked Sheldricks Lane. We walked in a tunnel under the highway to get to the Reserve. There was a lot to see as we ambled along, finally crossing a deep creek line and heading up rather steeply towards Margules Trig. We had lunch on a nice sunny slope, short of the summit, but some then ventured to the top and were rewarded with a large number of grass trees (Xanthorrhoea glauca ssp. angustifolia) - some taller than us with wonderful skirts. There were some good views from the old trig but it is rapidly being overgrown. There weren't too many flowers but enough to be interesting - decurrens, lanigera, Melichrus urceolatus, Monotoca scoparia, Goodenia hederacea, Rhytidosporum procumbens, Hibbertia obtusifolia, H. riparia, Acacia gunnii - and buds on A. buxifolia and Choretrum pauciflorum. Other of interest were rigida, P. chamaepeuce, Phyllanthus hirtellus, Cheiranthera linearis, Pomax umbellata and a tallish wattle which stumped us for a while but we decided on A. penninervis.
