Flatpicking Essentials Volume 1: Rhythm, Bass Runs, and Fill Licks In the “Pioneers” issue of Flatpicking Guitar Magazine Dan Miller laid out a flatpicking learning method that followed the chronological development of the style. This step-by-step method started with a solid foundation in the rhythm guitar styles of flatpicking’s early pioneers—a style that includes a liberal use of bass runs and rhythm fill licks, combined with rhythmic strums. Volume 1 of the Eight Volume Flatpicking Essentials series teaches this rhythm style and prepares you for each future volume. If you want to learn how to add interesting bass runs and fill licks to your rhythm playing, check out this 96-page book with accompanying CD. This book and CD are available in spiral bound hardcopy form, on CD-Rom, or as a digital download. Item No. 2437 Hardcopy: $24.95 Digital: $19.95 Flatpicking Essentials Volume 2: Learning to Solo—Carter Style and Beyond The second book in the Flatpicking Essentials series teaches you how to arrange solos for vocal tunes by teaching you how to: 1) Find the chord changes by ear. 2) Find the melody by ear. 3) Learn how to arrange a Carter Style solo. 4) Learn how to embellish the Carter Style solo using one or more of the following techniques: bass runs; hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides, & bends; tremelo; double stops; crosspicking; neighboring notes; scale runs and fill-licks. Even if you are a beginner you can learn how to create your own interesting solos to any vocal song. You’ll never need tab again! This material will also provide you with the foundation for improvisation. This book and CD are available in spiral bound hardcopy form, on CD-Rom, or as a digital download. Item No. 2444 Hardcopy: $24.95 Digital: $19.95 Flatpicking Essentials Volume 3: Flatpicking Fiddle Tunes Flatpicking and fiddle tunes go hand-in-hand. However, in this day and age too many beginning and intermediate level players rely too heavily on tablature when learning fiddle tunes. This becomes a problem in the long run because the player eventually reaches a plateau in their progress because they don’t know how to learn new tunes that are not written out in tablature, they do not know how to create their own variations of tunes that they already know, and it becomes very hard to learn how to improvise. Flatpicking Essentials, Volume 3 helps to solve all of those problems. In this volume of the Flatpicking Essentials series you are going to learn valuable informa- tion about the structure of fiddle tunes and then you are going to use that information to learn how to play fiddle tunes by ear, and create your own variations, utilizing the following a series of detailed steps. Item No. 2460 Hardcopy: $24.95 Digital: $19.95 Flatpicking Essentials Volume 4: Understanding the Fingerboard and Moving Up-The-Neck The fourth book in the Flatpicking Essentials series teaches you how to become familiar with using the entire fingerboard of the guitar and it gives you many exercises and examples that will help you become very comfortable playing up-the-neck. With this book and CD you will learn how to explore the whole guitar neck using a very thorough study of chord shapes, scale patterns, and arpeggios. You will also learn how to comfortably move up-the-neck and back down using slides, open strings, scale runs, harmonized scales, floating licks, and more. If you’ve ever sat and watched a professional players fingers dance up and down the fingerboard with great ease and wondered “I wish I could do that!” This book is for you! Item No. 2449 Hardcopy: $29.95 Digital: $24.95 Flatpicking Essentials Volume 5: Improvisation & Style Studies Are you having trouble learning how to improvise? To many flatpickers the art of improvisation is a mystery. In the 5th Volume of the Flatpicking Essentials series you will study various exercises that will begin to teach you the process of improvisation through the use of a graduated, step-by-step method. Through the study and execution of these exercises, you will learn how to free yourself from memorized solos! This Volume also includes “style studies” which examine the contributions of the flatpicking legends, such as Doc Watson, Clarence White, Tony Rice, Norman Blake, Dan Crary, Pat Flynn, and others. Learn techniques that helped define their styles and learn how to apply those techniques to your own solos. Flatpicking Essentials Volume 6: Improvisation Part II & Advanced Technique

Flatpicking Essentials, Volume 6 is divided into two main sections. The first section is Part II of our study of improvisation. Volume 5 introduced readers to a step-by-step free-form improv study method that we continue here in Volume 6. The second section of this book is focused on advanced flatpicking technique. We approached this topic by first having Tim May record “advanced level” improvisations for nineteen different flatpicking tunes. Tim selected the tunes and went into the studio with a list of techniques, like the use of triplets, natural and false harmonics, note bending, quoting, alternate tuning, syncopation, twin guitar, minor key tunes, hybrid picking, advanced crosspicking, string skipping, etc. There are a ton of absolutely awesome flatpicking arrangements by Tim May in this book, with explanations of each technique. Item No. 2462 Hardcopy: $29.95 Digital: $24.95 Flatpicking Essentials Volume 7: Advanced Rhythm & Chord Studies Flatpicking Essentials, Volume 7 is a 170 page book, with 67 audio tracks, that will show you how to add texture, variety, and movement to your rhythm accompaniment in the context of playing bluegrass, fiddle tune music, , acoustic rock, Western swing, big band swing, and jazz. The best part of this book is that it doesn’t just present you with arrangements to memorize. It teaches you how you can create and execute your own accompaniment arrangements in a variety of musical styles. Don’t rely on the arrangements of others, learn a straight-forward and gradual approach to designing your own rhythm accompaniment. Item No. 2463 Hardcopy: $29.95 Digital: $24.95

Flatpicking Essentials Volume 8: Improvisation Part III & Intro to Swing & Jazz

The eighth and final book in the Flatpicking Essentials series teaches you how to begin to play swing and jazz tunes in the context of a flatpick jam, including how to learn to improvise over swing and jazz chord changes. After presenting how to study and utilize scales and arpeggios in the context of using them as “road maps” for improvisation, this book presents three variations of ten standard swing and jazz tunes. You will learn the basic melody, plus two arrangements of each tune by Tim May. The tunes presented include: Avalon, Bill Bailey, 12th Street Rag, The Sheik of Araby, Rose Room, After You’ve Gone, St. James Infirmary, St. Louis Blues, Limehouse Blues, and I Ain’t Got Nobody. Item No. 2465 Hardcopy: $29.95 Digital: $24.95

About the Flatpicking Essentials Series: The Flatpicking Essentials instructional series is designed to teach you the art of flatpicking the acoustic guitar in a sequential, step-by-step method that will gradually build your flatpicking skill in a way that leaves no “gaps” or “holes.” While this method will be extremely beneficial to beginners, this series will also be of great value to those guitar players who have been working to learn how to flatpick for quite some time, yet can’t seem to get beyond a certain plateau. If you are having trouble moving beyond memorized solos, adding interest and variety to your rhythm playing, learning how to play up-the-neck, learning how to come up with your own arrangements to songs, learning how to play by ear, or learning how to improvise, then this series is for you! Too many flatpickers are learning how to play by simply memorizing transcribed fiddle tune solos from tab books and videos. In doing that they are learning ineffectively and inefficiently. They are skipping over many vital elements in the learning process and thus they have a weak foundation. In this series our goal is to help you build a strong foundation so that you can easily maintain consistent forward progress in your study of flatpicking. Each volume of this series presents material that provides the foundation for the next volume. As you will learn in the first section of Volume 1, the flatpicking guitar style developed chronologically along a very clear line of sequential technical skills. In order to learn how to flatpick fiddle tunes like Doc Watson, the student needs to build a foundation similar to the foundation Doc built for himself before he started picking lead solos on fiddle tunes. The first two volumes of this course present the techniques and skills that were developed on the acoustic guitar during the 30s, 40s, and 50s “the pre-Doc Watson skills” these are the skills Doc acquired as part of building his own musical foundation. The remaining volumes then continue to follow the chronological development of the style. If you have questions about this series, please send an email to Dan Miller: [email protected].

The Guitar Player’s Right Hand Workout by Jeff Troxel

The right hand is the most important component in the development of your guitar playing skills. You can have great left hand technique and know all of your scales and chords, but if your right hand is not accurate, smooth, and relaxed, then your timing suffers, your tone is weak, your note clarity is lacking and there is no sense of fluidity to your music. Your right hand is your metronome and your ability to create great tone and play at high tempos resides mostly in that right hand as well. In this book author Jeff Troxel present a series of right hand exercises that will help you develop dexterity and accuracy with your right hand. Practicing these exercises, with a metronome, will also greatly improve your timing. Additionally, Jeff provides exercises and tips to help you increase your speed. Flatpicking Up The Neck by Jeff Troxel

Flatpicking Guitar Magazine columnist Jeff Troxel offers a study to help you move your flatpicking up the neck. A thorough and practical approach to understanding the upper positions on the fingerboard for the flatpicking guitarist. Chord shapes, scale patterns, position studies, and repertoire teach guitarists to visualize how melodies and chords work together up the neck. Concepts presented here are invaluable for arranging and improvising in the flatpicking idiom. Written in standard notation and tablature, with an accompanying audio CD. Guitarists will learn a system for organizing chords and scales up the neck, as well as moving horizontally between positions. Open strings are blended with upper position notes in keeping with the flatpicking style, and concepts are applied to real music through tunes and variations. Concepts presented are transferrable to other styles of music besides flatpicking.

Western Swing Guitar Style by Joe Carr

If you have ever heard the sound of rhythm guitar in a good western swing band, you may have wondered how the guitarist achieved that unique chordal sound. While the song might be a simple one—playable with only two or three chords—the western swing guitar- ist changes chords every two beats, providing a driving and harmonically interesting background for the singers and instrumentalists. This book is designed for intermediate players who have a basic understanding of open chords. It begins with study of the Texas fiddle back-up style and the chords used to enhance this music. The chords and progressions explained in this book can be used in many types of music in addition to western swing and would serve as an excellent transition from open-string folk chords to more of a jazz approach. Primal Twang: The Legacy of the Guitar with Dan Crary

In September 2006 San Diego hosted the world stage premiere of Primal Twang: The Legacy of the Guitar — the first definitive theatrical journey through the guitar’s colorful and surprisingly controversial 3500-year history. The story of the “instrument of the gods” was told through a combination of onstage narration, video projections of rare historical footage, and electrifying live performances by world music legend, Dan Crary and an all-star ensemble of international guitar greats. Musi- cians include Grammy Award winners Eric Johnson, , Doc Watson, Mason Williams (“Classical Gas”), and Andrew York (Los Angeles Guitar Quartet), as well as Richard Watson, harp-guitarists John Doan and Beppe Gambetta, Brazilian jazz master Peter Sprague, and Grand Old Opry star Doyle Dykes. The program debuted to enthusiastic sold-out audiences at the lavishly renovated, palatial Birch North Park Theatre. Primal Twang was the brainchild of flatpicking pioneer and Taylor Guitars artist, Dan Crary and writer/producer/director Anthony Leigh Adams. The duo wrote a script that begins with the guitar’s ancient ancestors and covers not only the wildly eclectic forms of music played throughout the centuries on variants of the steel-string, nylon-string, and electric guitar, but also the sociological impact the guitar has had in every era. Primal Twang reveals compelling stories and music from the guitar’s past, present, and future. Dan and the seven-piece band perform everything from ancient modal music to classical, flamenco, and the Chet Atkins school, and from the guitar-based vocal pop of the early 20th Century through the jazz, folk, and rock eras, right up to today. At key points in the show, featured guest artists join the band, and the viewer gets to see and hear some of the best guitarists in the world as the “instrument of the gods” emerges from antiquity, gathers steam over centuries, and explodes in our own time to become the “universal” musical instrument.

Flatpicking Guitar Magazine: The Fiddle Tune Issue

Welcome to the May/June 2009 edition of Flatpicking Guitar Magazine. This edition is Volume 13, Number 4 of the magazine and is our special Flatpicking Fiddle Tunes edition. If you have been a long-time subscriber you will notice that our format in this issue is quite different. First of all, out of our regular group of columnists only Adam Granger has an article in this issue. Everyone else who contributed to this issue is a guest columnist. We invited these guest columnists to contribute to this issue so that readers could get a fresh perspective on the old standards. Secondly, we absolutely packed this issue with music. There are far less ads and there is not much writing. Other than the cover story, this issue is all music. We asked each person who contributed to the magazine to provide two versions of a standard jam session fiddle tune, one that leaned more towards a beginner level arrangement, and another that leaned more towards an intermediate/advanced arrangement. So, no matter what your skill level, there is something for you in this issue. Magazine $4.00 Audio CD $5.00

Robert Bowlin: Six String Soliloquy Flatpicking Guitar Magazine reviewed a pre-release copy of this CD in Volume 11, Number 4. Since then Robert has gone back in the studio to re-record and add to the project. This CD is an example of solo flatpicking at its finest by a masterful and tasteful flatpicker. When the pre-release version came out last summer there was some buzz on the internet listserv group Flatpick-L. Here is what list member Dan Mozell had to say: “There are lots of guitarists these days who have great technique and can generate excitement with hot picking. Robert can certainly do the same. But there are few who work with the full range of emotion that is possible in music. These are medium and slow paced solos intended to move the listener. John Jorgenson: Franco-American Swing In the world of Gypsy jazz music, John Jorgenson has long been know as one of the greatest American masters of the Django Reinhardt guitar style. In 2002, when the musical director for John Duigan’s film Head In The Clouds was looking for someone who could faithfully re-record two tracks from the Quintet of the Hot Club of France for use in the film Guitar Player Magazine editor Micheal Molenda recommended Jorgenson. Although the two songs from the movie soundtrack are included on Jorgenson’s new CD, the disc primarily features his original music. Jorgenson says, “My goal in making this CD was not only to be as true to the style as an American can be, but also to expand the style by adding new compositions and including orchestral arrangements which are the result of an on-going creative collaboration with the Nashville Chamber Orchestra. My background in classical music and my experience play- ing rock and pop music can’t help but color my compositions and lend an accessibility that can be rare in jazz.” Genre: Gypsy Jazz If you are a fan of Gypsy Jazz, this is a “must have” CD! $14.00 Item No. 2190
