The Royal House
Denmark has a constitutional monarchy, which means that the monarch cannot independently perform political acts.
The Monarchy Today
The monarch is Denmark’s head of state, whose essential duties are to represent Denmark abroad and be a figurehead here at home. The monarchy in Denmark is constitutional in accordance with the Constitution, and the monarch, or the sovereign, formally heads the government and represents Denmark during incoming and outward-bound state visits.
State visits
The royal family has paid state visits and official visits in large parts of the world.
The royal symbols include, among other things, the royal coat-of-arms and the royal colours.
The Royal Danish House is one of the world’s oldest, and can be traced back to Gorm the Old a. 960.
Amalienborg Castle in Copenhagen consists of four palaces: Christian VII’s Palace, Christian VIII’s Palace, Frederik VIII’s Palace and Christian IX’s Palace. Amalienborg became the royal residence after Christiansborg Palace burned in 1794, and The Queen and The Prince Consort reside in Christian IX’s Palace during the winter months. The Crown Prince Couple reside in Frederik VIII’s Palace.
Fredensborg Palace Church.
In the spring and the fall, The Queen and The Prince Consort reside at Fredensborg Palace, which was built in 1719.
Marselisborg Palace in Aarhus was transferred to The Queen and The Prince Consort in 1967.
Gråsten Palace
The royal family uses Gråsten Palace in the summer.
Royal collections
The royal collections have come into being over several centuries and contain objects of historical value which are attached to Her Majesty The Queen as both sovereign and private person. Large parts of the collections continue to be used by the Royal Danish House and are shown to the public at exhibitions, among other places at the Amalienborg Museum
The Crown Jewels
The Crown Jewels are owned by the state and consist of four large sets of jewellery that are at The Queen’s disposal, for example in connection with state visits and gala banquets. It was Christian VI’s Queen Sophie Magdalene who, in her 1746 will, provided that her jewellery should always be at the disposal of the country’s sitting queen.
