2017 State University and Class Queens Pageant SOUVENIRSOUVENIR PROGRAMPROGRAM BOOKBOOK PHOTO BY DAVID CAMPBELL/UNIVERSITY PHOTOGRAPHER Suna Mariam Njie, the reigning Miss Alabama State Univer- sity, brings her own sense of culture, style, poise and intellect to the coveted title. All the way from Gambia West Africa, by way of At- lanta, Georgia, Suna strives to be a leader with purpose, while serv- ing her fellow students proudly.

A graduate of Westlake High School in Atlanta, Suna utilized the slogan, “See Me,” during her campaign for the Miss ASU title. She said, “I emphasized the slogan throughout the year by encouraging students to step into the limelight of success strategically despite the inevitable struggles they will face.”

Suna is deeply indebted to Alabama State University and demon- strates that constantly as she speaks about the opportunities that she has received as a student, as well as the academic scholarship that she earned to ensure that she was formally educated - both inside and outside of the classroom.

According to the future medical doctor, Suna noted, “I believe that Alabama State University students should be prepared for their dy- namic path to greatness through the five initiatives of education, en- vironment, empowerment, experience and embodiment.”

She wants students to continue to become uncomfortable with com- placency, to break barriers and actually be the change they want to observe. She says, “My purpose is not to implement change, but rather to motivate it within students. In this way, our institution is in the hands of diverse, innovative and prepared students who are armed and ready to weather any storm that will come.”

Suna has held several leadership positions at Alabama State Uni- versity including president of ELITE Models, vice president of Beta Kappa Chi National Science Honor Society, and Miss WEB DuBois Honors Program. She says that each of these positions taught her one key factor: Success is a holistic journey.

Despite her busy schedule, Suna has remained a scholar with a 3.97 grade point average; but she still makes time for mentoring and tu- toring activities through organizations including ASPIRE and Circle K International. Suna is the daughter of Assan Njie and Medina Deen-Njie, and the Suna Mariam Njie niece of Ebrima Sosseh and Fatou Nyang.

Her favorite quote is by Meg Cabot, “Courage is not the absence of fear, bur rather the judgment that something is more important than 2016-17 Miss Alabama State University fear.” Suna Mariam Njie 2016-17 Miss Alabama State University Photo by David Campbell Keveja Thomas Kaela Moses DeAnna Hardy
