  • Credit Union Guidebook
Retail Impact Investing A GUIDEBOOK FOR CANADIAN CREDIT UNIONS FOREWORD Impact investing has the potential to be a growth opportunity and differentiator for the Canadian credit union sector. Today, impact investment options exist primarily for institutional and accredited investors. The opportunities for everyday investors to generate a return, while generating positive impact, are limited – this, despite evidence of market interest led by millennials and others. Credit unions are well positioned to tap into this opportunity. A core part of their mission is to ensure the financial, social and environmental well-being of the communities they serve: a mission that is aligned with the principles of impact investing. We see this Guidebook as a tangible resource to help credit unions address a marketplace gap and empower members to make investments that will have demonstrable, positive impacts in their communities. The Guidebook offers credit unions of all sizes and at all stages of their social responsibility journey actionable ideas of how to create and deploy retail impact investment products for their members. The guide also points to recommendations that the credit union sector as a whole can undertake. The Canadian Credit Union Association (CCUA) is committed to working with credit unions to explore how these recommendations can be advanced. We welcome your ideas and feedback - contact us at www.impactinvesting.ca/contact. CCUA is proud to have partnered with Purpose Capital, Employment and Social Development Canada, as well as a number of interested credit unions, to develop and share the research in this Guidebook. We want to extend our gratitude to Affinity Credit Union, Alterna Savings and Credit Union, Assiniboine Credit Union, Conexus Credit Union, DUCA Financial Services Credit Union, Libro Credit Union, Mennonite Savings & Credit Union, Meridian Credit Union, Servus Credit Union and Vancity Credit Union for their support and contribution to the development of this Guidebook.

  • In January 1978 Kesho Systems Began Trading with the Express
In January 1978 Kesho Systems began trading with the express purpose of developing and providing powerful, flexible, state of the art software for accountants in practice by utilising the sophisticated features of emerging micro-computer technology. The philosophy, which led to this decision, was two fold. First, it seemed sensible to target a respectable, professional market, which recognised the benefits of computerised accounting. Secondly it was evident that, by creating and maintaining a reputation for high quality software and unparalleled support within the chartered accountancy profession, the company would benefit from recommendations to design and supply software to the client companies of its accountant users. With the main emphasis being devoted to customer satisfaction through support and enhancements the original philosophy proved to be very successful and has led to continued growth. Indeed, many of the company’s clients have enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship through three and four generation of computer systems spanning some twenty years. Kesho is proud to have always been at the leading edge of technology and when IBM launched the Personal Computer, the company was awarded the, much coveted, IBM authorisation. It was during this time that Kesho first gained an interest in the accounting functions of Credit Unions. In 1987, following a comprehensive feasibility study and details systems specification, Kesho launched CUMAS, the credit union management and accounting systems which dominated the UK market for a decade. However, between 1990 and 1997, contractual constrains prevented Kesho’s involvement, although, by popular demand Kesho did provide support and enhancements from 1995 to keep the system alive.

  • A Guide to Canada Emergency Business Account (CEBA)
A Guide to Canada Emergency Business Account (CEBA) Overview: Originally launched on April 9, 2020, CEBA is intended to support businesses by providing financing for their expenses that cannot be avoided or deferred as they take steps to safely navigate a period of shutdown, thereby helping to position businesses for successful relaunch when the economy reopens. This $55 billion program provides interest-free loans of up to $40,000 to small businesses and not-for-profits. Repaying the balance of the loan on or before December 31, 2022 will result in loan forgiveness of 25 percent (up to $10,000). As of June 26, 2020, businesses eligible for CEBA now include owner-operated small businesses that do not have a payroll, sole proprietors receiving business income directly, as well as family-owned corporations remunerating in the form of dividends rather than payroll. This means that more small businesses can access it. Applicants with $20,000 or less in payroll in 2019 will have to demonstrate having Eligible Non-Deferrable Expenses between Cdn.$40,000 and Cdn.$1,500,000 in 2020. Expenses are considered “Eligible Non-Deferrable Expenses” if they were already incurred in January and/or February 2020, or are due to a legal or contractual obligation as at March 1 and cannot be avoided or deferred beyond 2020 even during a period of shut down and depressed revenues as a result of COVID. CEBA is not intended to provide income support, or support for variable operating expenses to businesses. CEBA applicants agree that the government may conduct audits to confirm the nature of the expenses applicants use to establish their eligibility for CEBA, and acknowledge that inaccuracies may lead to legal consequences.

  • How to Pay the CRA
Stern Cohen LLP 45 St. Clair Avenue West, 14th Floor Chartered Professional Accountants Toronto ON M4V 1L3 Chartered Accountants T. 416-967-5100 Licensed Public Accountants F. 416-967-4372 Business Advisors www.sterncohen.com How To Pay the CRA If you have a balance owing to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), we recommend that you pay electronically. For your convenience, here is a “How To” guide outlining two online payment options available to you. Option 1: Online banking Sign in to your financial institution's online banking service. Under add a (bill) payee, look for CRA (revenue)-(2014)-tax owing. Be sure to enter your account number (your social insurance number) carefully to avoid a lost or misapplied payment. The payment may take two to three days to be processed so make your payment in advance to ensure timely receipt. Some financial institutions (specifically those outside the Big Five Canadian banks) may not support online payments. We recommend checking to see if you can add the CRA as a bill payee in advance to confirm that your financial institution supports the service. Option 2: Debit card - Interac® Online (My Payment) Use the CRA's My Payment service to pay with your debit card through Interac® Online. Only BMO, Scotiabank, RBC, TD, Envision Financial, and Libro Credit Union support the My Payment function Remember: Your transaction total is subject to your daily or weekly limit as determined by your financial institution. Final Thoughts and CRA Late Filing Penalty Reminders If your personal income tax return is filed late (even by a day) you’ll automatically be assessed a 5% penalty on the balance owing.

  • Social Purpose Credit Union Self-Assessment
SOCIAL PURPOSE CREDIT UNION SELF-ASSESSMENT 2017 Credit unions are formalizing and focusing their ‘social purpose’ to better meet member needs, play a stronger role in fostering resilient and co-operative communities and grow their businesses. This tool was developed to help them in that effort. Using the language of corporate social responsibility (CSR), it guides credit unions through a process of considering the purpose and focus of their social role – which includes the environment and extends beyond traditional banking and co-operative roles. This tool was first commissioned by Libro Credit Union, based in Ontario, Canada, to assist them in their strategic planning. Libro engaged Coro Strandberg, President of Strandberg Consulting, to draft the tool based on best practices in social purpose in financial institutions and consultation with “CSR” and values- based banking practitioners in the Canadian credit union system. It also incorporates leading corporate practices from outside the financial services sector. University Federal Credit Union, based in Texas, US, subsequently engaged Coro Strandberg to update the tool to reflect best practices in the United States and globally. The Social Purpose Credit Union Self-Assessment is designed to assist in credit union strategic planning. It is a four-stage checklist of best, leading and next practices in CSR, social purpose and values-based banking in seven areas: governance, members, employees, community, environment, suppliers and business partners and the co-operative sector. Author: Coro Strandberg is a leading sustainability and corporate responsibility consultant, with over 25 years of experience advising credit unions and other companies on the design and implementation of community investment, CSR, and social purpose business models and strategies.
