Smith, PhD Marc Choueiti Ashley Prescott & Katherine Pieper, PhD Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism University of Southern California An Executive Report Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media Our earlier research shows that gender roles are still stereotyped in entertainment popular with children.1 For example, female characters in feature films populate less than 30% of all speaking roles. A slightly better percentage emerges across our research on gender roles in children’s television programming. Not only are on screen females present less frequently than on screen males, they are often sexualized, domesticated, and sometimes lack gainful employment. To illustrate this last point, our recent analysis2 of every first run general audience film (n=21) theatrically released between September 2006 and September 2009 reveals that a higher percentage of males (57.8%) than females (31.6%) are depicted with an occupation. While females hold marginally more professional jobs than their male counterparts (24.6% vs. 20.9%), women are noticeably absent in some of the most prestigious occupational posts. Across more than 300 speaking characters, not one female is depicted in the medical sciences (e.g., doctor, veterinarian), executive business suites (e.g., CEO, CFO), legal world (e.g., attorney, judge), or political arena. More optimistically, 6 of the 65 working females (9%) are shown with a job in the hard sciences or as pilots/astronauts. These findings suggest that females have not shattered as many glass ceilings in the “reel” world as one might suspect.

As rock journalism evolved in the 1960s and 1970s, so did two dismissive and misogynistic stereotypes about female fans: groupies and teenyboppers (Coates, 2003). While groupies were scorned in rock circles for their perceived hypersexuality, teenyboppers, who we can consider an umbrella term including boy band fanbases, were defined by a lack of sexuality and viewed as shallow, immature and prone to hysteria, and ridiculed as hall markers of bad taste, despite being driving forces in commercial markets (Ewens, 2020; Sherman, 2020). Similarly, boy bands have been disdained for their perceived femininity and viewed as inauthentic compared to “real” artists— namely, hypermasculine male rock artists. While the boy band genre has evolved and experienced different eras, depictions of both the bands and their fans have stagnated in media, relying on these old stereotypes (Duffett, 2012). This paper aimed to investigate to what extent modern boy bands are portrayed differently from non-boy bands in music journalism through a quantitative content analysis coding articles for certain tropes and themes.

    ‘LOVE AT SEA’ Cast Bios ALEXA PENAVEGA (Olivia Grayham) – Alexa PenaVega, a Miami native, is an actress and a singer. Her career began as a young girl in 1996, when she starred as Jo Harding in the hit film Twister. After that, she guest-starred in various television shows and films such as “The Bernie Mac Show,” “ER” and “Ghost Whisperer.” The movie that catapulted her to worldwide fame was the 2001 film Spy Kids, in which she starred as Carmen Cortez. After the enormous success of that movie there were two sequels: Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams and Spy Kids 3D: Game Over, as well as the 2011 reprisal, Spy Kids: All the Time in the World. PenaVega went on to appear in many other films such as Sleepover, State’s Evidence, Odd Girl Out, Walkout, Remember the Daze, Repo! The Genetic Opera, and The Pregnancy Project. While PenaVega has an impressive movie filmography, she has also had massive success in other areas of the entertainment industry. She played Penny in Hairspray on Broadway, had TV roles in shows such as “Ruby & the Rockits” and “Big Time Rush,” appeared in Aerosmith’s “Legendary Child” and was a contestant on Season 21 of “Dancing with the Stars.” PenaVega is also a singer – over the course of her Spy Kids career she contributed three songs to the various movie soundtracks (“Isle of Dreams,” “Game Over” and “Heart Drive”). She also sang “Christmas is the Time to Say I Love You” for Walt Disney Records’ compilation album Songs to Celebrate the 25 Days of Christmas in 2009.
