JUNE 2018

At A Glance From the Desk of the CEO Rod Burkett As Father’s Day approaches this year, I would like to recognize and honor all of our residents who are fathers and grandfathers. Thank you for decades and decades of your love, your strengths and your fatherly presence. Raising children during or immediately after the Depression or World War II had to be a challenge, but I’m sure it was also rewarding in many ways. I would also like to acknowledge and honor the many dedicated, loving fathers who work with our company. On a daily basis, I witness many

Challenge to Be Physically Fit fabulous fathers who are working diligently to help carry out our mission, and who are balancing their lives and giving their authentic selves to their family. I also know that there are many single mothers that are employed in our firm that often have to function in the father’s role too. I am in awe of your compassion, your strength and your ability to accomplish so much. You definitely deserve to be honored on this day too, and all other days. I have been blessed to be a father and to also feel the excitement of being a grandfather 6 times! I have made my share of fatherly mistakes and know that I need to always work at staying connected and being a better communicator, but being a father and grandfather is the best job I’ve ever had! “I can’t believe we did 2 marathons!” Happy Father’s Day y’all!

IN THE NEWS A Message from the President JoEllen Bleavins Alzheimer’s is an unforgiveable disease. It leaves your body intact but steals your memories. Nearly 6 million people in this country suffer from it. Every 65 seconds, someone in the U.S. develops the disease, and the Alzheimer’s Association estimates that number will increase to 14 million by 2050. The disease claims more lives than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined. Those numbers are alarming. This cause is near and dear to our hearts. The staff at our memory care communities interact with residents and families who are dealing with Alzheimer’s every day. They help residents maintain a sense of purpose throughout the stages of dementia. Because of the work they do, our communities have planned a day full of activities for the Longest Day on June 21. This national day of celebration is about love for everyone affected by Alzheimer’s. We encourage you to check the websites for our memory care communities and join their efforts, register for a Longest Day activity of your own or donate to the cause, so that we can work toward finding a cure to end Alzheimer’s.

LIFESTYLE A Note from the Administrator

Scott Douglas Resident Birthdays:

Life brings its ups and downs, and so do elevators, at least Gordon O. 6/3 when they are working properly. As everyone knows our elevators Sang-Man (Sam) P. 6/5 have seen better days, and it is time to replace them with newer Donald C. 6/11 technology. Unfortunately this isn’t like picking something up at June B. 6/13 the store, but requires a long process to get from point A to point Helen B. 6/22 B. I have met with the ownership and they have directed the process to begin in having our elevators modernized. This starts Henry S. 6/24 with hiring a “middle man” to come and work with us in obtaining Dorothy V. 6/28 bids from elevator companies, choosing the equipment to replace our current elevators, how the work will be done and working with other vendors such as plumbing, electrical and construction. Our goal is to have the plan finalized this summer/fall and replacement to start November and December. We look forward to advancing our community by providing more up to date products. I will keep the community informed as we progress towards our goal.
