The Sheikh Zayed Mosque in is an architectural work of art, or masterpiece. It is also the third biggest mosque in the world after ’s Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina, both in . However, unlike these tow mosques, this one is open to non-Muslims, providing that women cover themselves from head to toe in abayas which are handed to them at the entrance.

The project was launched by sheikh Zayed in 1998 and took nine years to complete. He was the UAE’s first president and also the ruler of the oil-rich . Sheikh Zayed died in November 2004 and is buried in a courtyard next to the mosque.

“As Sheikh Zayed had wished, the mosque was built on a hill so it is visible from far,” said engineer, Mohamed Ali Al-Ameri. It covers an area of 22,000 square meters and can accommodate 40,000 worshippers. The mosque is made entirely of Italian .
