DC PRESERVATION LEAGUE Most Endangered Places for 2011 Nomination Form Site Name: Foundry Branch Trolley Trestle Location or Address: Crossing Foundry Branch of Rock Creek in Glover Archbold Park, Just north of Canal Road, NW Year Built: ca. 1900 Owner Name and Address: National Park Service Specify occupant if different from owner: Is the property occupied or vacant? Unused/derelict Historic Designation: ❏ National Historic Landmark ❏ National Register ❏ DC Inventory of Historic Sites X Not Designated or Don’t know Submitter’s name, address and telephone number: DCPL Landmarks Committee Please provide the following information: 1. The historic, cultural or architectural significance of the site. 2. A description of the threat facing the site and the immediacy of that threat. 3. Suggestions on what actions are needed to alleviate the threat. 4. A description of how listing on DCPL’s Most Endangered Places list would help the site. 1. Significance: The trolley line from the Georgetown Carbarn (on M Street near Key Bridge) to Glen Echo, Maryland, was constructed around 1900, and although the tracks have been removed the right-of- way continues as an almost unbroken trail along the lip of the Potomac River overlook in the Palisades neighborhood of DC. Only two bridges still exist – a short span now a well-maintained foot bridge near the DC/Maryland line, and the much longer and derelict span crossing Foundry Branch in Glover Archbold Park. This assembled steel span is one of a dwindling number of early transport bridges still existing in the city, and if repaired and tied into the nearby network of trails could provide a unique recreational resource to the city. 2. Threat: The Foundry Branch trestle is barely standing now, no longer strongly connected to the surrounding valley slopes at either end except by improvised cables. rust and weathering have seriously damaged the structure, although it can be repaired and re-used. 3. Suggestions: The trestle must be recognized as a resource of considerable potential to our park system and stabilized immediately. Long-term plans and appropriate funding must be provided to repair the structure and create paths to both ends of the bridge and the surrounding park. 4. Value of MPE Listing : MPE listing will make the condition of the Foundry Branch Trestle better known in the community, and begin to create interest and support for its rehabilitation. .
